    Your first 'Teething' experience

At what age did your child/ren get their first tooth? How did they act prior to the tooth appearing? And what did their gums look like while the tooth was emerging?

DS is 4 months corrected & I am sure he has a tooth on the way. He is screaming for no reason, feeding frequently, he has unusual sleep patterns & I can see a white spot on his gums. Is he too young to be teething? Also he is chewing anything he can get hold of.

I would love to hear your different experiences.

    TIA

Sounds like teething to me! Yes, he's young, but its by no means unheard of. All of his behaviours sound like teething, but the real clincher is that white line in the gums- then you know its not random grumpiness, but truely teeth!

Don't worry, it usually only takes a few days for them to break through and stop causing them pain.

Nope not too young, so yep could be it!

On avg, 6 months first tooth - but it varies widely and it is not a milestone as such.

#1 - no issues whatsoever, just saw the dot and a couple of days later accompanied with loads of drool and runny nappies - a tooth at 7 months

#2 - ears, ears, ears and tooth at 5.5 months - runny nappies also

#3 - I think Zander is on the edge too Georgi, same as Byron, they have been on that damn phone again - when did you give him a mobile??? Zander's been a bit off, his cheeks a bit ruddy and crying out of character - cant see anything, but drooling heaps and chewing with vigour (but chewing normal for this age too.

IMO they come when they come ,,,,, each kids is different with how their bodies cope with it - and how the babies cope with it too temperament wise.

Great question Georgi, I've been wondering the same thing.

Hmm you've just described Xander too... but I don't know whether it's just a response to vaccinations.... but ruddy cheeks for sure, but he doesn't have a temp or anything.

DS has just got his two bottom teeth - two teeth in two weeks - ouch! He has been a massive drooler since about 4 months and I was sure he was getting his teeth back then. Apart from the drooling, the most recent sign was him tugging on his ears. He didn't get any other of the usual teething signs. He was a bit grumpy a few times in the past couple of weeks, but then again that could have been overtiredness or anything really.

He seems to wake up screaming then is really difficult to re settle. I mainly have to BF him to calm him down. I am wondering if his teeth are growing whilst he sleeps?

Jazz is going through something similar, random screaming and pretty much impossible to settle without the boob, pulling on her ears and gosh she is going full force at her rusks!!!! Sharpens them to a point!!!

I am pretty sure its teething as she settles down nicely once we use some teething gel!! Am going to try some of the brauers teething stuff I think, has anyone elses tried it?

Darcy didn't get a tooth until 10 months. Everyone told me all her symptoms were teething symptoms for the 6months prior to that.....a fortnight later she got another and in the fortnight after that she got 11 - I didn't even notice. It just happened that I used a metal spoon and noticed it 'clinked'. Mother of the year award for me - not.
By the time she was one she had 16 teeth (included her 2 year old molars). Now i can feel her four year old teeth....
    All kids are different.

For us, Cameron got his first tooth at exactly 6months, next came 2.5weeks later and just this week (he's now 8.5months) he has gotten both top teeth within a few days of each other. But its never too early for teeth. My cousin's son had 4 by 4months and the 8 by 8months, and friend's daughter had 7 by 6months (the 8th popped up about 2months later I think).

The 'symptoms' have all been rather the same...
    • white spots on his gums
    • unusual screaming wakes ups during the night
    • playing with his ears alot
    • lots more dribble
    • rosy and rather dry cheeks (probably from all the extra dribble)
    • had difficultly bf - he would cry and carry on - but was fine when offered a bottle
    • went off his food
    • seemed to enjoy the teething rings sooo much more (I could easily see it was giving relief)
    • and for boys they can get a kinda little red rash on there scrotum just under there penis

The symptoms kinda crept up though, but in the last 2-3weeks before they broke though was definitely increased - then one day I could see the tooth clearly under the skin, and the next day it had cut through and about 2mm up.

I agree with you that they must grow better when they are asleep- this 1st top tooth I had checked his gum before he had his afternoon sleep, and a few hours later when he woke I could see it had broken through.

Goodluck...hopefully they'll pop up soon to give you both some relief, at least til the next round

Georgi, I have cut and paste - but these are Zanders symptoms - and you might of read in our baby buddies thread that after another runny nappy early afternoon i had a good look, and yep, can see the two little white lines of both teeth - so am thinking this is it - early for my babies but they are all little individuals!

Took me 90 mins to get him down tonight which is extremely unusual, and pattern of being in cot 10 mins, then pain screaming/crying poor darlin.... and poor mummy fingers crossed for overnight

with the growing whilst they sleep theories - well at this age they are asleep for anywhere from 14 - 16 hours avg of the day!!

OMG Sam.. They have so been on their mobiles again... BJ also took 90 mins to go down tonight. The first time ever! He normally goes down with NO fuss at all. He screeeeaaamed the house down. The same as you describe. The little buggers.

Well BJ was quite good all day today. He slid back nicely into his routine & I was feeling blessed again. But then...... Bed at 7pm, no sleep till 8.45pm. I'm not sure if it was pain. He sounded like he was but when I picked him up his screaming stopped. He did seem more clingy tonight though. He just wanted to be close to DH & I, which is unusual for him. Hmmmm, so hard to know isn't it.

I can now add my first teething experience

DS was very whingy & clingy for about 3 or 4 days, then, he had a day when he was back to his old self. That morning I noticed a tooth had cut through the gum. He was fine for another day, then a day later he was whingy & clingy again, the next tooth cut through the next day.

He had a white spot on the gum for months, though the actual teeth started showing through the gums about a month prior

He was just over 6 months corrected (nearly 8 months actual age)

Kameron was a breeze. He just got teeth without any major complaint. I remember we were in the supermarket one day and he yawned. I said "oh strange Kameron has a white spot on his gum" and I tried to wipe it off. Then I was "OMG HE HAS A TOOTH". He has since lost that precious first tooth and now has an adult tooth in it's spot.
