Oh No, not another Posterior Labour??!!

Hi All....At my 36 week app apparantly bub was 3/5 engaged, in a great position and apparantly a good but not enormous size now much to my disappointment at my 38 week appointment the midwife has told me that he or she is ....

    1. Back in Posterior Position
    2. Not engaged at all (although I am aware that especially 2nd time around they sometimes won't engage until labour?)
    3. A very big baby

With my first DD she was 10 days overdue, I had a posterior labour with lots of back ache, I felt like I gave into an epidural too early, then after a long time of pushing eventually had a forceps delivery and episi. She was also a whopper at 10pd 7on or 4.74kg!!

I was feeling alot more positive about this birth and doing all the 'right' things such as lots of time on all fours, sitting on birth balls wherever possible, lots of walking, very rarely slouching and doing perri massage religiously. I had researched the spinning babies website and read alot of stuff.

Now feeling very disheartened that apparantly all my 'work' at the moment is leading up to the same birth experience as last time....

Anyway enough with feeling sorry for myself and sorry for the long speel but I was just pretty much wondering for all you mums out there who has had a posterior bub (especially 2nd time around)...

    1. Where you overdue with your Posterior bub?
    2. Did your Baby turn during labour from Posterior? How long was your labour?
    3. Do you have any advise that may help with labour?
    4. Am I worrying about nothing?

    Thanks

All I can say is...me too!

I had a posterior 1st bub with forceps delivery (sounds like yours). This time the baby is posterior again at 38 weeks....

My doctor did say you are more likely to have a second posterior bub if the first was....but he also said they can sometimes rotate at the last moment.

After much consideration and research (and a whole lot of other factors) I have opted for a CS....I just couldn't do the same birth as last time. I feel at ease with my decision.

However, that's just me. Others will have positive experiences of second births after posterior I know because I have certainly heard them.

    Hi!
I havn't had two pos babies (well I have, my first one was emergency C then my second was forceps and episi due to fetal distress) but I just wanted to point u towards About Spinning Babies they have some great info on getting bubs into a perfect position
I also wanted to say that bubs has moved in the last two weeks so they may move again in the next two weeks!
    Good luck

My first baby was posterior. She was born posterior also didn't turn during labour or birth. My second came out OA (opposite to posterior) I don't know what position she was in in the final week or during labour. It was so much easier 2nd time around. Even if your baby is posterior now it doesn't mean it will be during labour and during birth even when they are posterior they can rotate whilst pushing (remarkable to see) Not all posterior births are difficult and seeing as your birth canal is a proven passage now your birth should be much easier then first time around even if your baby remains posterior. I hope he/she turns anterior as it is the easiest way to do it but if not I would take comfort in the fact your body has done it before and its unlikely to be a repeat of birth no1.

My first labour was days. When I got to hospital with no1 I was 6-7cm at 3am. By 1030am I was finally fully dilated (so much for 1cm an hour) and she was born at 127pm. I had being having regular painful contractions for 3days before she was born and at 1am 26hrs before being admitted I was 3-4cm. It was so long and exhausting. No2 I started bleeding so went to hospital on arrival my waters broke at 530am and she was born at 1130am. Labour really kicked in at about 9am so only 2.5hrs of active labour. It was a breeze in comparison to no1. But no2 wasn't posterior.

Hopefully this wil answer all of your questions

Nearly 7 weeks early with PB
OB assisted in turning bub in labour, very quick labour, waters broke, ctx started 45minutes later, another 45 minutes to internal at hospital, 7-8cm, bub was born about 45 min after that.

At home I was kneeling and leaning on a bar stool, rocking it on two legs through each contraction, resting inbetween, then I laboured on my knees leaning over the end of the bed, had to turn right at the end as I needed an Episotomy to get bubs out quickly, as they lost the HB (only as she was too far down).

Labour on your knees, using heat and rubbing on the back is great especially during ctx. I was planning on using the shower but didn't have time, I think the hot water right ont he base of my back would have been really good, as it provided me good relief when I had hurt my back.

And try not to worry, it sounds like you have prepared yourself really well by looking at Spinning Babies as suggested above, sit on chairs back to front, spend more time leaning forward, on all fours, these things can help. But just because bubs is in a posterior position now certainly doean't mean that bubs will still be in the same position in labour.

So much can happen between now and then, you can do this, you can birth this child, you have birthed a big baby before, your body can do it, as your body has been through it before it will remember what it needs to do. Take care xxoo

Both my girls were posterior. I did all the 'right' things to try and turn them around naturally, but nothing worked. DD2 was born naturally with no drugs, 6 hour labour. I birthed both of my girls on my back (my preference). For me personally, it was easier than being on all 4's. DD2 was 8lb 1oz, so a good size. She was a day early.
Try not to worry too much about bub being posterior. Good luck!
