Looks like alot of ladies get quicker with each one eeek!!
#1 - 8.5 hrs active
#2 - 3.5 hrs active
I've had around 11 hrs each time of pre labour but once i go into active labour it's quite quick. Lucky we only live a quick short 5 minute drive from hospital.
Depends on whether you count "prelabour" or not. My active labour time got shorter, but my over all labour time did not.
DD1 - 2cm-delivery in 7 hr.
DD2 - 2cm-delivery in 7 hr.
DD3 - stuck at 3 cm for 8-9 hr, then 4cm-delivery in about 2 hr.
DD4 - prelabour for about 18hr. 4cm-delivery in 4 hr.
DS - prelabour for about 18hr. 4cm to pushing in 3hr. Pushed for 1hr. (Baby in a bad position.)
For me the warm-up time got longer - I was not taken by surprise by my labours, nor did I feel like I wouldn't have help in time. The long prelabour stage was tiring, physically and emotionally, but I knew it was getting everything good and ready for a quicker delivery.
DD1-10 days overdue, induced with gel 7 hrs labour
DS1-2 yrs later went into labour spontaneously right on due date about 6 hrs
DD2- 4 yrs later induced with gel then syntocin drip 5 & 1/2 hours
DS2-6 yrs later went into labour spontaneously a week before my due date 3 & 1/2 hrs
DS3- coming this January! I'm actually hoping that if my pattern continues it's not too much shorter as it would be too intense & it wouldn't give me enough time to prepare myself & also get to the hospital in enough time.
My first I cannot tell you how long I would have laboured for as we were trying to stop it (extreme prem)
My second from first niggle to baby out was 2hrs 19min.
I am hoping to labour quickly again BUT NOT AS FAST ... sorry to all those wishing they had speedy labours but just because its fast doesn't mean its easy. Most fast labours put Mum and/or Bub in shock which can have its own problems. I went into shock and went all shivery and DD was stunned and refused to move or feed and she just lay there for ages until a MW intervened. They almost took her away.
Twins where c section do who knows how long they would have being. Ds3 was lots of pre labour but 3 hours full on labour. Ds 4 was about was about 8 hours of pre labour and 1&1/2 of actual labour. Ds4 was the hardest of the lot very fast and very painful. Pushing stage was only 9 minutes but it was enough to cement the decision that he will be my last baby!
DS was 18h from start to birth but active labour from SROM was 6h40m.
DD was 3h45m from PROM to birth, 2h50m from first contraction.
I dread the thought of going quicker, DDs labour was so intense and fast - i felt mentally in transition when I was only 3cm and I think that was the worst thing.
Being so fast also meant i felt really out of control because there was no getting used to labour or getting into a rhythm it was just BAM.
My mum went 8h-4h-40m then 4h (while they tried to stop it) with twins.
With both boys I really didn't have any prelabour at all, just game on!
DS1 was 10 hours of labour, posterior with his hand up beside his head.
DS2 was 2 hours 50 minutes, born less than 20 minutes after arriving at hospital. He was also posterior when I commenced labouring but I managed to turn him early on.
Yes, DS2 was a short labour but I didn't feel that shock or out of control sensation that others have described. I'd happily have a short labour again. After DS1, I looked like and felt like I'd been run over by a truck (yes, my mother told me I looked like I'd been run over by a truck!). DS2 I recovered much more quickly - a bit shaky at first and a bit of blood loss, but felt really great.
In the births I've supported I tend to see a trend, with mum's who have birthed before tending to be quicker the second or third time around. The body has done it before, it knows what it's doing and the tissues and muscles, having stretched to let a baby out once don't need as long after that first birth.
That said, other factors unique to the individual birth can also come into play - the positioning of the baby etc can have a big impact on the length of labour and are specific to each individual birth.
But generally speaking, the first birth is usually the longest.
Dragoncookie- I totally agree with you about the fast intense labour. I found the same thing with DD, there was no time to get use to any thing, no real pattern to the pains, surges etc. The only way I knew I was in transition was my sound changed naturally and everybody started to run for things
