yep. if he has free access to the breast, he should get everything he needs. Have to be cautious with giving any other fluids as it will displace milk (and thus reduce his nutritional intake).
The temperature was a bit better today at least!
Yay 15 months is a long time
So after nearly a week of 40+ degrees here DS overheated last night - my mum was suggesting I give him some cool boiled water as well as feeding him myself. But as far as I know, he gets everything he needs from me, even when it's stupid-hot?

On the plus side, giving her that information made me feel so good, it's confirmed that I do want to do some kind of breastfeeding counselling course
I'm going through the climbing-all-over-mummy thing right now, for the lasteight months or so
If she has free access to both sides, she'll switch sides a thousand times per feed, or twiddle my opposite nipple, or do whatever other annoying habit a baby can have

We just all do it so hard, don't we. The pressure to bottlefeed is almost overwhelming. For every one of you there are 10 other people telling her *it just doesn't matter - put her on the bottle". And we are hounded with how we should find breastfeeding so hard and unpleasant. No-one much tells you that when all that stuff is sorted - breastfeeding is one of the highlights of your parenting experience.
Almost 3 weeks into our tandem feeding journey. It was really hard those first few days when the toddler gained renewed interest so it felt like I had one or the other or both attached at all times, then the toddler was over it and I was engorged trying to encourage her to have a feed lol now things have settled, DD1 mostly sticking to just a bedtime feed and DD2 being a normal round the clock newborn. Less than 3 months till DD1 is 3, can't believe we are here, never expected to be and glad I was inspired and informed by so many wonderful people here! Guess I'm hardly a novice anymore lol.
Well done, Jellyfish!
Hot day = thirsty baby. I think every time I wake her (which is whenever she's put down or moved) she asks to be fed!
She is such a booby monster I can tell she's growing quickly. For such a small baby at birth (2.8 kg) I'm guestimating at least a full kilos gain in not quite four weeks. She's too long for her 0000 suits already! I might weigh her at my HB group on Thurs for interest's sake.
Hi ladies. Congratulations on your BFing journey's. I find you all such an inspiration and this thread is so encouraging to me. DS is 4 months old now and our BFing journey is going great. I was worried that as I am working and he's taking EBM from the bottle he may reject me but he is BFing like a champion - I am so proud of us. I've been thinking about starting him on water due to the weather as well but I'm hesitant as I don't want him to have any excuse not to take from the breast. He's super long and I'm finding him difficult to hold onto and feed comfortably in the afternoons when he is wriggly. I've had a recent bout of mastitis and I've booked an appointment with the LC next week to try and sort out these minor difficulties I am having. I just so want this BFing journey to last until at least 12 months.
i have been tandem feeding for 10 days. i have only fed both kids at same time couple of times, much easier to feed them seperately. i try give dd her feeds when ds is asleep or with dh so i can give her my full attention.
i'm wondering whether ds might have reflux or colic. he is quite chucky, but also gets unsettled with feeds. hopefully can get into osteo this week to gt him checked out.
Thinking of you HotI. I only tandem fed for six weeks, but I found ds was super chucky in the early days due to the sheer quantity of milk. Most babies at ten days old will be able to access a small amount of milk per feed but your toddler has guaranteed a great supply, so he is probably guzzling more than his tummy can handle at present.
Don't worry though, he will just spew any excess, and gain weight rapidly. The only down side is all the washing you have to do!!!
Ds was gaining almost a kilo a fortnight in those early weeks...he was in size zero by four months and at ten months is growing out of size one. It's amazing what our bodies can do!
as for me...I'm STILL battling latent signs of breast and nipple thrush, such as breast pain after feeds. It comes and goes, and I periodically take antifungals etc. I have been sugar free for nine months now, but to no avail. *sigh* I would love to feed for two years or more, but it is really impacting my health...not that stopping will cure the systemic thrush, but at least I could be rid of the pain.
My newborn seems quite windy which I thought might be to do with the large supply driven by the toddler, she also gets the hiccups a lot and put on 500g in her first week (not sure what since then as haven't weighed but she is definitely growing and fast, doesn't help she was already a kilo heavier than DD1 at birth so she seems like a giant to me already stretching her 000s lol).
Any tips for making things easier for the newborn as we don't have any plans to stop tandem feeding for some time? Time I guess?
I was actually considering trying a dummy while things are settling as DD2 finds it difficult to comfort suckle with all that milk but worried about trying to get rid of it later.
Yeah, my baby is finding it difficult to comfort suck and ends up choking half the time. In her case, it's mostly her own fault though 'cause she's such a guts. Lol I was wondering whether to ride it out or offer a dummy. DD1 had one but I am so proud of how much DD2 is growing I don't want to interfere with a dummy. The other thing making me consider it is that she hates the car (capsule) and cries for entire trips. I wondered if it might calm her. She wakes up if she's put down or moved and gets stroppy if she isn't fed after being woken!
Jellyfish - your baby is the only one I know of outstripping mine in weight gains! We're out of 0000s, but my DD1 was still wearing 00000 at this stage! It's a shock to see her getting rolls on her legs already.
She started a lot bigger though! My DD1 was similar to your bubs (2.9kg) although she stayed small and was like your DD1, still in 00000s lol but DD2 was almost 4kg so skipped the 0000 all together although I squeezed her into one as it was the only outfit I had bought for her haha. I think I will weigh her again soon just for interests! She does seem to feed every hour during the day and I'm leaking everywhere constantly so not too surprised, hoping that calms down!
We tried offering a dummy but she seemed disinterested and had no clue what to do so decision might be made, DD1 did the same thing although she was 4 months when I offered so thought it might be related to that. I'm also having trouble getting DD2 to sleep off of me for any length which is making it hard to have quality time with DD2 so that was a motivater as well. DD1 is crazy understanding though, kind of breaking me out how accepting she is considering the first 2 years of her life it was just me and her so sharing me is a new concept. I have the latest picture of DD1 watching one of DD2s first feeds and the look of wonder and interest, I'll have to try link it when I get proper net on the comp tomorrow.
Hi everyone. On phone, so no personals.
DD is 9 months on Thursday and still feeding like a champ. She's absolutely thriving on my milk - she's a hefty 10.8kg (though I'd say genetics is playing a big part in that - DH was a rolly polly baby too).
She's had a few top teeth come through in the past month, and since then I've started experiencing a big of pain when feeding. Sometimes it is due to the teeth (there are teeth dents on my boob after she's done), other times I think it is from her maybe not being on properly when she's comfort sucking, like when she's feeding to sleep, and especially through the night - which sucks because it seems she just wants to be attached all night at the moment.
Sterla, my ds can hurt my nipples too with his teeth. He latches on and tries to crawl or roll away! Ouch!
Tandem feeders: I did find a dummy helped, but ds was a thumb sucker at that age, so would often spit it out in favor of his thumb. Time was the only thing that solved it for us. I weaned dd when ds was six weeks due to severe thrush, and that really evened things out too.
Jen, both of mine have screamed in the car. It's so stressful! I just walk or PT it everywhere, and don't visit my friends who love far awayeven now ds isn't great in the car.
Just popping in to say WOOOHOOOO! 12 months today!!! Its been so wonderful, so beautiful, so PERFECT! From our very first feed, things have been brilliant, we've had zero issues which I consider to be very lucky! YAY! Here's to hopefully another happy 12 months, but whatever happens from here onwards I will be stoked with our effort![]()
Have been BF DD for the last hour and every time I take her off she cries and wakes. I honestly feel like throwing her against the wall. I obviously wouldnt but this whole BF while pregnant is hard sometimes. I just want to scream at her get off! Gosh how mean does that sound. Any tips of getting rid of this feeling it's horrible. Day time feeds seem to be better but the night time ones are horrendous!
I'm not even pregnant and I feel this way sometimes - last night Amelia wanted a loooooooooooooong feed and sleep just as dinner finished cooking, and I couldn't get away from her for about two hours. Then she woke up 15 minutes later anyway!
I find distracting myself while feeding is the best way to deal with the "getoffmegetoffme" feeling most of the time. Thank goodness for my iGadgets! It doesn't work all the time, though...

I agree with distraction - start a good book. Next time around that's what I'll be doing.
Take the time when you have these feelings to look at her - stare at her and just remember how much you love her - how proud you should be for breastfeeding imagine what she might be like in a year.
It's completely normal to feel that way sometimes - less people admit it to actually feel it because they think it's "wrong" but it's not. Have you tried ebm for a break??? It's another option. By nighttime I'm sure it's just feeling tired and a need for some you time. Dh used to do one bottle a day and it was always the night one to give me a break
