I have dental pain (wisdom teeth), also causing earache, headache and a feeling of inflammation and pain in my throat/glands.
Thankfully it is only on my LHS or I don't think I could cope as I have been clutching my face in agony.
I am booked in on 30 April to have them all out and it can't come quick enough.
Obviously my problem is pain relief in the mean time.
I have been living off frappe's / icey smoothies to ease the swelling it seems to be the only thing that helps.
I am on a dose of Keflex (GP prescribed it) which is supposed to help clear the infection and pain (ear and throat/glands) but the oral surgeon's office said that if it doesn't help by Monday to call them and make another consult and they cn try another anti-b. Personally I have had three days now and I don't think it is helping all that much.
I am really struggling with the pain and am considering pumping and dumping for the next week and a bit so I can get some stronger pain medication.
My heart breaks at the thought, this is the same time I introduced formula to DS and we ended up ceasing BFing at 9.5m. Different circumstances but I think it's all closely related in my head. Anyway, ill survive that or look for EBM.
But I am scared of losing my supply. When DD was born I could pump easily, now that the supply has settled I really struggle to get more than 60-80mls at most. Normally I am lucky to get 30 or so. DD has also been waking anywhere between 2-4 hourly at night (bar 3/3 night of 8 hrs ) and I worry that filling her tummy with something heavier than breastmilk that digests less quickly she may sleep longer therefore aiding the further demise of my supply. Though the idea of sleep is appealing i really want to continue breastfeeding.
If there was any surety of meds helping i would almost do it in a heartbeat but the other thing is that i worry they won't help.
Does anyone have ny thoughts, advice or suggestions? Sorry it sa bit jumbled.

there are pain medications you can get that are ok when breastfeeding. over the counter meds i know are ok are panadol and voltaren (an anti inflamm). either ask your GP to find you pain meds that are ok whilst breastfeeding or ring one of the maternity hospitals and speak to the drug info person. i think there is a national line now (1300 medicine or similar). Rodney whyte at monash is awesome.
Yeah i should have added i am taking nurofen plus and it barely makes a dent. Not tru actually, it helps, but not for very long.
Some pharmacists won't even sell it to me when I answer yes to 'are you breastfeeding', but others advise to take at the beginning of a feed and assuming she sticks to 4hrly it should be mostly worn off by the next feed. Rodney has said nurofen plus / panadeine is okay. GP said panadol only.
They give much stronger to bfing mothers after delovery (panadeine forte, mersyndol, tramadol) but i think it is thought so little crosses the milk supply and so little milk is hard in the few days post birth. I guess i will try a drug info line later on. thanks x
i would prefer for baby to be exposed to some drug that was needed by me, than to give formula, but some people would prefer the other. it has to be what works for you, but don't let misinformation influence your decision. information is available if you want it.
Thanks for the links. I have done some reading now, it seems the real quest is going to be convincing a GP to give me a script against their 'better judgement'.
I guess now I need to talk to DH and get him to read to. Thanks x
Can you combine nurofen plus with panadol osteo (which is slow release)? Or is there a slow release codeine out there?
It seems as though your biggest issue is that it doesn't last long enough, rather than that it's not strong enough.
Also, consider topical anaesthetics - even teething gel might help a bit, but I think that there are stronger ones available too.
