How long after CS did you get out and about...?

    Hi

With my CS booked for 2 days time *eek* I'm just wondering how soon it was people were happily able to go out for short little trips, eg down to shops for a coffee, or a walk in the park, etc?

Obviously the driving side of things is limited but how long before I can expect to get away from these four walls for pleasant (if short) outings?

    Hi Marydean

It's hard to say. I know some people who have had to do very little (in terms of walking, car trips etc) for a couple of weeks. Others are up and about straight away. It really does depend on how your surgery goes, and how fast your body heals itself.

Just take it slowly and be guided by your body. As a general rule of thumb, all going well, you should be able to go walking with bubs when you get home (just try to avoid big hills etc).

All the best for your C/S. Can't wait to hear about how you go

After I left hospital 6 days with my first 4 days with my 2nd I went to the shops probably the next day and a short walk about a week later. I have to say keep your walks short. I went for a walk that was a little to long and I hurt by the time I got home

so around 7 days was my average..

    Good luck with your C/s

A friend of mine had a c/s last week. She's a very healthy girl, who had a great pg, but is still struggling to walk from the brm to the kitchen (and her house is very small). I initially thought she'd recover quickly like some people do, but she's not.
Something her OB told her was, if you think you can do something, half it, and that's what you can actually do. You might think you can do more, but your body won't allow it.
    Good luck!

I went to the shops the day I was sent home. I felt like I could have gone home a lot earlier (went home on the Saturday but wanted to go home on the Thursday after having DD on the Monday). I recoved really really really well. The lady that was in the room next to me had a c-section an hour before mine (I had to wait for her to be done) and she still wasnt out of bed on the Thursday. I think I would be about 30kgs bigger than her and u would have expected that she would be fit and healthy and I would have had the problems but she was in too much pain. One of the midwifes said to me that she had an extremely low pain threshold.

I had my c/s in the very early hours of a Sunday morning, on the Friday after I went to the shops for coffee. After we had to get some grocery type things, but ended up getting a full load but I was very sore afterwards. That night we also went to a friend's BBQ but I was sitting relaxing most of the night.

Well I have no idea whether I have a low or high pain threshold - except for labour/period pain which involves a different set of prostaglandins to "normal" pain! *Sigh* I guess I'm about to find out, aren't I?

I'm really just wondering as Floriade starts here next week and it would be a nice little goal to work towards getting out there in a couple of weeks...

As long as you take it easy I think you'd be able to handle Floriade in a few weeks. It's all relatively flat & there are heaps of places to stop for a rest if you need to. It's not like you'd be rushing around either, just a gentle stroll which would be lovely IMO.

We might even see you there

    Hey Marydean,

Firstly - good luck, it's an amazing phase you're about to start!

I had an emergency c/s, so wasn't perhaps as fully prepared as I would have been if it had been planned, but I found that i was mostly up & about quite comfortably after the first couple of days, although in hsp I got some pretty good & regular pain meds. The only thing that caused me problems is that I stopped taking panadol after I got home, and after a couple of days was pretty uncomfortable, so my advice would be that if the midwives tell you to keep taking panadol, then listen to their advice. I also took the occasional Nurofen. And (sorry if TMI), but also had problems with constipation, so coloxyl was my very good friend for a little while there...I tried natural remedies for this, but they just weren't enough. Again, my advice would be to keep an eye on this aspect, cos I let it go for too long and was in serious pain for probably a week or so as a result.

Marydean, after my first c/sec I had a lot of pain, but we moved interstate two weeks later so I HAD to be up and about then! By that time I was able to take short walks with the baby in the sling.
After my second c/sec I had a much faster recovery. I was in hospital a week because the baby was in the NICU, but I felt really well and was walking up and down to NICU within 2 days. Once home, I was able to take short walks straightaway.
As everyone has said, listen to your body...take the pain meds, and remember that they will work only if you get adequate rest...keep well hydrated and nourished.
    Woo hoo! Very soon

How exciting!!!! After my first emergency c/s I came home after 3 days and went to the shops the next day. I felt great but really took it easy. Day 5 for baby three and four went to the shops. I took it a lot easier with Sammy and noticed that if i did exert myself at all my loss (sorry tmi) would increase dramatically so sort of paid attention to how my body was feeling. Listen to yourself and be guided what is right for you.

Good luck Marydean! How exciting to have just a few days to go!

I had an emergency section and spent 5 days in hospital. The day I got home, I got home and went straight to bed for a nap then when I woke up, DH and I went shopping! When DD was 10 days old, DH and I took her Godfather out to dinner in the city which involved lots of walking around the city. I found I was ok if I had the pram to help me walk... and I also listened to my body and rested when I needed it. I was regularly walking about 5-6Km by about 4 or 5 weeks...

HTH and I can't wait to hear your exciting news!

I had my c/s on the monday was home thursday morning and went to the shops on the saturday with DH and DS. I think I did overdo the walking though as I got a little faint when we were out.
I think you need to just see how you go and not over do it.
There is no reason you couldnt make short trips out thoug within the week as long as you were chauffer driven

Thanks. I have to say out of the 3 c/s I have had this was the most positive. I had good c/s last time but this time I just felt fantastic... they used a different type of spinal thing with me and i was less numb and numb for less time..

Plus in recovery they sat me up a bit higher and put me on oxygen straight away as the nurse there said it helps to get the drugs out of your system faster,
