cottees are notorious for their preservatives...one of them they use is also used as an industrial cleaner...I cant drink the cordial, gives me chronic blood noses.

    wow, thanks for that Limey.

for the original poster, i was going to say, we have just switched to a vegemite alternative, called VEGESPREAD. in a jar of the healthy food section in coles or woollies. a little stickier to spread.

i was told by some people that it was like vegemite but WITHOUT the preservatives and additives in it. But i must check if it's got yeast in it.

i agree with others, it would have been more useful for your doc to tell you WHICH ingredient in vegemite set off your child, not just the product (cos it has multiple ingredients in it).

glad to read all this talk about 220. that will stick in my brain now, to help me work out what NOT to buy at supermarket.

if i read a whole stack of numbers to avoid, i forget them all.
but if i just hear about ONE, i tend to remember that.

last time i read a helpful thread like this, i rmember being told 330 was just citric acid, not too bad at all (for most people).

Gigi have you visited the fed up site it has a list you can print off and keep in your purse for shopping trips.

Lime - the big packet of smarties now have natural colours - yeah. Cotties and GC suck in cordial - they get rid of one thing but not the other so they might have no artifucal colours but have preservatives or vise versa - grrr I am getting a little over "magic coridal" after nearly a year now :-)I have a reaction to vegemite that I only realised after doing our elimination diet causes headaches and shortness of breath after about 30 min as I'm sensitive to MSG

    Oh also to the OP

the fact that your bub had it from head to toe to me sounds like he had a systemic reaction to it, from what I call a rash is what the body does when it findsan allergen and takes it to the surface to eliminate it - my DS actually gets a rash when he gets some colds and flus as this is how hs immune system behaves.

Those who get it around their face sounds more like a contact rash.

    Hey Ladies,

Great thread - I'm sure this will help many Mums. Vegemite is a notorious allergen, mainly due to the yeast, 220 (sulphur dioxide) and malt. Because your son's rash was all over his body, I tend to agree that it is most likely from the sulphur dioxide.

And Gigi - I am a huge advocate of VEGESPREAD by Freedom Foods. No yeast, no gluten, much less salt, and from memory, preservative free. A much healthier option, and most families find that vegemite is a distant memory after a couple of weeks.

Squidipa - I would still hold off on introducing such foods to your little guy - if he's showing some signs of food sensitivities, I'd take it slow in opening up the world of solid foods to him.

    All the best
    xxx
