Unfortunately no one got to eat the McQueen cake that I made... I was waiting for when both the Man and the boy were home at a decent time so we could do the whole candle and photo and eat thing. Stupid me. That was never going to happen! Then, moved house, so in to the bin

Yesterday was DD's birthday, and I only just managed to make ice cream cupcakes. I got to the point where I just felt like dumping them all in the bin because I had such a bad time with the icing. The butter was too soft and would not whip up properly, so I now have 450-odd grams of butter in the fridge, combined with two cups od sugar, to try and use for something else. I really really wanted to make french cream icing to pipe onto the tops of the cone-cakes to look like soft serve, which I was then going to dip into melted chocolate. Again, . Since the butter wouldn't whip up, I couldn't even make buttercream. Yet again, . I don't know if it was just because of the warm butter, or because I was also using a hand blender stick thing. Because we have just moved, I am yet to find my mixing bowls for the mixmaster. I think they are in the carport. So, yesterday, at 7am, I was colouring and rolling fondant to cover each cake (25 in all). Later while in Coles while looking for some extra cake decoration, I discovered icing in a can, like whipped cream. So, all the cakes got three piped swirls.

Oh yeah, I made them for all of DD's class, because now I don't even know if we can afford to give her a party.... Double

Oh, and I had three cakes left over from school, so I took them to the Man at work, for him , his boss, and coworker (perfect number!). Can you imagine three fellas, in their mechanic garb, eating these rather dainty little cone cakes?

Lol, that would have made a great photo HotI! They were meant to get their photos taken for the local paper yesterday, that would have been even funnier.... Maybe I need to make some more!

    Most recent cake...

Netix this was the cake in question (that I thought I was so clever with the insides... )

It's a Star Wars Angry Birds Cake.

It's black velvet cake with Chocolate flavoured fondant, with black chocolate ganache filling.

Everyone loved it. I can't wait to do my next red velvet chocolate cake with black dark chocolate ganache now. Yum! And pretty at the same time! Or purple velvet and black... Or black velvet and strawberry white chocolate ganache with red colouring.... Or green and black... It's endless.

Thanks guys! Tan I was for a while trust me. My first cakes for the first 7 years were all buttercream. The first fondant cake I did was a Ben 10 omnitrix about 3 years ago. And it was a nit are to cover. Because I had t done it before. But now it's easy as. And I only ever use spreadable ganache under the fondant for flavour and because its so stable and firm.

    Rouge, those combinations sound amazing!
So, pardon my ignorance (i feel silly even asking) but is velvet just chocolate with food coloring?

I am curious about the velvet combos too! I am scared of buttercream because I have only ever used fondant.

Yep. Pretty much. It's very light chocolate cake. To do with the rising agents. Originally it was red due to the type of cocoa used. Then people used beetroot. Now it's just plain ole food colouring!

You're all kinda of awesome Rouge. I'm scared to share cake decorating efforts in the same thread as you lol

It's nice to hear that you only used buttercream for a long time. There is hope that ill get over my absolute fear of fondant eventually! At the moment I'm a ganache only person lol

Very nice Rouge! To colour your fondant, do you only use, omg, brain fade gel/paste food colour?

I am supposed to be helping a friend decorate a Jake and the Neverland Pirates cake this week. That should be fun!
