My sis is in the UK atm and has offered to get me nappies for Christmas! She knows me well So, any suggestions for good UK/European nappy brands I should ask for? DD seems to have a skinny waist compared to the size of her things and rise, and is a pretty heavy wetter. Natural fabrics next to skin are also better for her. TIA!

At least my nappies dry, but then again if they are out over night they are soaked by morn!!!!!

oh, to be somewhere where it rains! we haven't even had clouds in the sky for last fortnight. just plus 35 temps.

I have since discovered that she is sensitive to the chemicals in sposies and wipes (can only use huggies).

Propylene glycol is a big culprit (see ingredient list for baby wipes)

Anyway getting to the point, I have just switched to side Snappers and DD has developed blisters and redness around the leg holes. They are worse first thing in the morning as she is such a heavy wetter and even her Mandy Mac's purple night nappy is soaked through, I have started adding a trifold as extra boosting (i still get leaks out of the cover but not as bad as before). Anyway the pawpaw ointment has helped and I have given her 2 days nappy free (she's loving it) but every morning it is back, albeit not as red.

My suggestion is:

stop using PUL covers for night covers. Many have FOE around the legholes (cause irritation to many babies, if worn for LONG wears, e.g night wears.
PUL covers are best suited for SHORT wears e.g day, but some kids are so sensitive to the FOE (fold over elastic), they don't suit those kids even in the day time.

Switch to covers for night that are suitable for night

- handknit wool soakers (no waist or leg elastic) but do need handwashing
- machine wool covers (hidden elastic) but do need handwashing e.g sugarpeas wool sidesnap covers
Wool is a very good night option, lanolised wool keeps absorbing fluid, after the fitted nappy is 100% saturated.
with PUL, once fitted nappy is 100% saturated, the PUL then "wicks" or leaks, as the fluid has nowhere else to go.

- malden mills windpro covers with hidden elastic (machine washable) e.g sugarpeas fleece covers
- malden mills pullup covers, zero elastic (machine washable) e.g dancing bears "bear bottoms" covers


I can't go nappy free all the time as she's not TT yet but she is spontaneously using potty now!!!!! Although it would be nice if it was all the time, the carpet is looking decidedly patchy now. Oh for tiles.

You can get cloth training pants. i had white rental carpet to deal with. the firm fitting legs of the cloth trainers (e.g imse vimse) caught the poo, that would have been on the floor, if i'd had in her knickers (loose legholes).

I'm going to try to find some canesten rinse to see if it is bacteria that is causing it cause I am not washing as often as I used to, but if anyone has any suggestions please let me know as she is itching and pulling at her nappy like crazy.

What is the INNER fabric on the affected nappies?
(suedecloth and microfleece are often teh culprits)

Do the affected nappies have FOE?
Only thing to do with those, is stop using them and get ones that DON"T use FOE.

Nappy rash can be caused by so many things, hard to isolate EXACTLY what is setting your child off.

in general
- use ONLY WATER to clean her bottom
- use ONLY WATER to clean her in the bath
- wash the nappies in hot water and very little MILD MILD washing detergent
- while nappy rash is at it's worst, avoid synthetic fabrics e.g PUL. The most breathable mcn option possible is natural fibres (inside and out) nappy, with wool cover. i had to do this, to get my DD over her skin reaction to synthetic inners.
- leghole irritation to me, screams "FOE" reaction.

having a child with nappy rash bad, made me research fabrics heaps, educate myself so i could make more suitable buying choices in the future for my child's nappies.

have you ever handwashed and lanolised a woolly soaker/shorties/longies before? it sounds daunting, but is not as hard as it sounds. Wool was the best cure for my DD, it breathes so well, and nappy rash thrives in dark, moist environments, so if you can keep your dd's bottom as well ventilated as possible, that goes a long way to helping.

i've put down general stuff, as i don't know your individual situation (except that i read you use a PUL cover with FOE for overnight). i did that when my bub woke every two hours, but not for longer sleeps. and not for a heavy wetter.

Do you sew? i sewed up double layer cotton velour liners for all my dd's nappies, it kept the inners of pale nappies looking good, and it allowed my DD to wear synthetic inner nappies ocassinally, so the natural liners were great for us. I made her first ones out of cut up old flanny sheets. Bamboo velour ones would be nice. I found single layer liners just annoyed me, double layer was much better (sat nicely).

you can get raw silk liners for NR too, but that involves handwashing them, i found out i wasn't THAT dedicated to teh cause LOL.

so i've cast a wide net, i hope SOMETHING in my ramble might help you!

if money is tight, i suggest you cut up old flannelette sheets, shirts and make up double layered liners to lay inside her nappies.
Remember to change baby more often, if using NATURAL liners.

if handwashing is unlikely (perfectly understandable if you are about to have newborn twins!), i suggest teh malden mills windpro pullup cover and covers. (sugar peas adn bear bottoms, few other brands like Staccinator deluxe adn Swaddlebees fleece. But bear bottoms is PULLUP and ZERO elastic.

can you knit?
there are free online patterns for knitting handknit woollen soakers at nappycino (under the DIY KNITTING section). Of course you still need to buy the wool (you need merino 8ply minimum, no acryllic).

i can't knit, but can sew with a machine a bit.
there are free online patterns to make BUMJUMPERS.
you get an old merino wool jumper/blanket whatever adn cut it up, sew up a cover shaped woollen soaker.

there is a wool MACHINE WASHABLE pocket nappy called Ecobubs.

i remember coming across a handknit woollie maker, who lives in FNQ and thinking "why would someone in high humidity area, put wool on their baby?" - but the longer i used MCN< i realised, wool was the most breathable thing, so it actually made perfect sense. The soaker is waterproof, once you ahve lanolised it. (you handwash and lanolise once a month, unless there is a poosplosion on the cover). machine washing, you do after every wear.

but i didn't use wool in the "runny poop" stage (e.g newborns). my dd had her synthetic reaction at 14 months old.

BG - raw silk are one of the only things I haven't tried... I had forgotten about them so thank you for reminding me.

Maz - have tried the throw away liners - they work kind of... on average she will keep a nappy on for 15mins before chucking a tanty/screaming blue murder. She has an outy but isn't red and doesn't look irritated - I had thought maybe I was doing the nappy up to tight so loosened them but it doesn't make a difference so that is what makes me think it may be the materials or the feelings of wetness.

I know this sounds silly but how much can a baby pee & poo because in the day I went through a bizillion nappies each one had a decent pee and about every second or third had a poo - not a huge one but a poo all the same. It is like the material just makes her go.

don't be expecting a lot extra for having three kidlets hun - unless you have three or more in one birth, all you get is the same FTB as any other three kidlet family - which is all dependent on income. your ftba will go up, but ftbb won't change at all...

well, itti's are good, but they didn't quite contain nine days worth of trauma last night! oops! poor DD hadn't dirtied for so long, so mummy gave her a big tummy rub (again) and lots of cycling with her little legs, she had a sleep, and then watched us eat. after dinner, daddy got up to take plates out, and she let rip (didn't sound like anything more than wind). next thing she was hollering for HIM - daddeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee daddeeeeeeeeeeeeee, he called back that he'd be back in a sec cos he was busy. i asked if she wanted mummy. nope. daddeeeeeeeeeeeee, daddeeeeeeeeeeee. so he gave up what he was doing, came back to pick her up - and got covered! bwahahahah! i ended up having to change the nappy (he had too much on him to be any help lol) - then he went and washed the nappy, hand washed the clothes that had gotten stuff on them... so sweet!

TK, I second Bimboo's suggestion of elimation communication. It sounds a bit complicated trying to watch them for cues to know when they're about to go, but I've had great success just sitting her on the potty every 10-20 mins and making a 'psss' sound. ATM it's so hot she is only wearing nappies to feed and nap. If you are changing nappies every 10min anyway a potty is way easier!

i used EC tips on the site "tribal baby" to help toilet train bilby (at 27 months old). that site is so helpful in all sorts of scenarios. i ignored it for ages, because i wasn't into ec-ing bilby from arrival. I tried part time EC and that didn't work (when she was walking), then i read the site again when it was tt-ing time, and all of a sudden, we got success.

TK - greenkids have an inner layer of suedecloth, some kids react to that, beign against their skin.

could you EC her just at home, and have MCN on her for going out and naps?

i realise the flannelette liners get wet very quickly, any liner or inner made from natural fibres does, that's just the opportunity cost you pay, if you have a child with sensitive skin (more freq changes).

i've never mcn-d a child in the tropics, so i don't know the tricks to help with humidity.

it can be very stressful to have a child with a bad nappy rash outbreak, i remember feeling very distraught, when bilby had her big reaction at 14 months TK, so you have my sympathies, at the time, i thought it was The End Of MCN for us. but we got thru it, thanks to heaps of online suggestions.

are you isolating out any possible triggers?
e.g "resting" the FOE covers and aios?
resting the sudecloth inners?
to see if that helps any?

VERY occassionally, i hear of a baby being reactive to something natural against their skin, e.g hemp or bamboo. it seems to be WAY more common for a child to react against synthetic fabrics against their skin.

Hi ladies,

need some help regarding online ettiquette at B4B - is that the acronym I am suppose to be using??? Anyway I know a lot of you have purchased from there before but I have never used the site before and not sure what the rules/ettiquette is.

SOmeone has asked how much I want for a few of the nappies I am selling via auction. The nappies are on auction for a week and have 6 days to go. She says she won't be here when the auction finishes so I'm assuming that she means she wants to buy them before the auction finishes??? Is this allowed/polite??? I know on ebay it's a nono but I didn't know if it was different?

I would really prefer to just let them go on auction as I don't know how much to ask for them - thus the whole auction idea appealed to me but I don't want to say no to possibly the only buyer I might get - soooo what's the general ettiquette on this site???

Also why I'm talking about it - I have striped washed all the nappies, line dried in the sun they have no stains or anything but is there anything else I should do to make sure the person receiving them is happy??? I was thinking of putting a little scented paper disc in the bag just so they smell nice and sweet when the package is openned?

Saram, scented disks?, You're sweet.
Nope, nothing else, just package them up in prepaid bags or if you can be bothered wrapping them yourself, you will bring your post price down to $4.35 for anything under 500gms. Most poeple just use the prepaid satchels. If you can, get you PO to put the post code on the reciept for you so have have proof of postage (at least as much as you can have without registering)
Re, selling before the end of the auction, I am sorry, I have no Idea, but if you wanted to PM me, I can prolly give you a market value on them.
When people do this to me on ebay, I just say thankyou very much, but I will take my chances at auction.
Ps I think the "I will be away" story may be a fabrication, I get that one ALL THE TIME on ebay. Methinks people who shop on ebay have way more doh than me, cause they sure do take plenty of holidays.........

Thanks MLM - that;s good to know! I did end up writing back and explained that even if I wanted to I don't think I can end the auction now that it has been bid on and that I wasn't very familiar with how the whole thing worked so would prefer to just leave it. Hopefully I don't annoy anyone :-) I will remember the receipt idea! Good thinking
