    Silent Reflux (Scarlet)

Hi Hun, just saw your other post..
Finally got some acknowledgement from the midwife appt today. She siad it sounds & appears to be Siulent Reflux, he has become happier on the gaviscon & slept 4 hours between night feeds (something rare here!)
I am seeing Mum's cousin whom is a chiro tomorrow & he is going to look over Zyon, plus give me some natural stuff to take which can pass through my breastmilk safely to Zyon & give me a vitamin boost!?
I am also seeing a Dr (couldnt get in to the one at the practice I NEED to see as she's booked full for 3 wks!) But the receptionisy said to see this other lady as she is good & has kids & if it's something she isnt able to deal with there & then she will call the other lady I wanted to see & go thorugh it with her!!!
Also the MW was angered at the MCHN, GP & Paed I have seen in the last 3-4 wks all telling me he has behavioursal issues!!
He is asleep now (another rarity here during the day!)
I am stoked I have returned to full breastfeeds & dumped the tin of lactose Free formula!
The MW said it will take a while for the dairy protein to leave my system (like atleast 10 days) but it passes quickly thorugh Zyon..

I just wish I;d never let it get to this & the other F'wits acknowledged his pain & by now we could be on top of it!!!

It is just so very hard when everyone is telling you something different, I had the worst time with Parker and getting him diagnosed and medicated properly. I unfortunately had to get and find all the information myself and for us it worked.

I am glad that finally someone has given you some acknowledgment on it. That is great that he is sleeping on the gaviscon. The thing I like to tell people about reflux meds is that if they work then it is reflux as it only helps reflux (not like say panadol which helps other things if you know what I mean..I also have to add that if the reflux meds don't work, it doesn't mean that it isn't reflux just that you may have to try another medicine)

I have heard a lot of great things about Chiros, a very close friend of mine who I met through a reflux support forum her child Jack sees a chiro and she swears by it. I am also a great beleiver in trying whatever you can to see what works, unfortunately with reflux there is no one thing that will work so trying is what you need to do.

Good luck with the doctor, I hope that she listens to you, go prepared, take in notes of what he has been doing and when and for how long, take particular notes on
    hicccups
    gulping
    coughing
    sleeping patterns
    screaming
    irritability

Doctors love lists, they tend to listen more when you come in prepared and also if you have a refluxer it is hard to remembr everything you need to say at that time and you kick yourself cause you don't ask.

Hun, and doctor who tells you that a newborn baby has behaviour issues does not have kids or is living in the dark, babies that young do not have behaviour problems, they have pain, but not attitude

I am happy to hear that you are breastfeeding and taking dairy out of your diet, this is a really good first step. Try keeping him upright after feeds and propping the cot/basinette to see if that helps.

Don't beat yourself up for listening to professionals it is what we are mean't to do, they are mean't to have to answers, don't take no for an answer with the GP, if you are not satisfied tell her, and say that you want something done, I am so much stronger now than I was in the beginning, unfortunately I have had to be.

My wish is that reflux becomes more recognised and more doctors understand the emotional as well as physical strain it puts on the child, parents and family. It is no fun. I hope this is a short ride for you guys

Thanks Scarlet, I am going in FULLY prepared to do battle, it's a battle for my son & 1 I will win!
The Chiro gave me some natural stuff that helps the gut mature & it helps alleviate the acid, he said even taking the whole bottle wouldnt harm Zyon or myself!
It's my Mum's cousin & he is the Chiro for the Australian Paralympic team (his son is a paralympic basketballer!) So he is really good!

Anyways I guess tomorrow the starting place for meds would typically be Zantac???

Thanks heaps I can finally see some light & enjoy my precious son!

*hugs* TRacey!! YAY!!! I'm so happy you have seen some results.

Often they start with just gaviscon in the early days & if that doesn't alleviated everything they start something else. We started on gaviscon with Matilda, then mylanta and then zantac. That was over 3 years ago now though... things have changed

    Tracey,
Can I ask what Zyon's poos were like?! My paed. has told me to put Hamish on soy formula for three days and then he wants to try Neocate. I'm not happy about it as I REALLY want to keep BFing. Alot of the Silent Reflux symptoms ring true for us, especially the fussing and crying when feeding-- sometimes he will come off the boob and let out a big loud scream. I'm sure I read somewhere too that the food intolerances can go hand in hand with reflux so that could be causing his mucusy, bloody poos? I'd be interested in hearing Zyon's symptoms as a point of comparison. We're getting desperate to find an answer and want to avoid FFing if at all poss. Thanks, Leah.

Hope, Zyon's poo has always been fairly green, but not frothy, just green!? When he was on the formula feeds (regrettably) his poo went Yellow, but the MW said any formula lactose free or not would change his poo!
He has never had blood or mucous though!? Sorry I cant help, I'd maybe trial the gaviscon as you can buy it at chemist (Infants Gaviscon) & see how he goes, I am REALLY annoyed I was told to put him on formula, as he is heaps calmer/happier with the gaviscon, but didnt change on the lactose free formula, if anything I'd try to lactaid/lacteze drops on my nipples & feeding that with the gaviscon to prevent giving up the breast!
I'd also get MORE OPINIONS!!! As I found out many cant be bothered & just wanna fob you off!!!

    Good Luck!

Thanks Tracey! I just went and got the Gaviscon. He's been very upset all morning and is exhausted but can't get himself to sleep. How do you administer it to Zyon? I tried an eyedropper before but it was alot to take that way and Hamish hated it! Can we mix it with breastmilk-- I know it says to do it for bottle-feeding.
I'm so over this situation-- it's become all-consuming. We'll have a reasonably good day and I think things are turning around and then the next day is awful and I spend the entire day and night trying to comfort him. Was Zyon fussy on the breast? Hamish gets himself in a real state during some feeds and it's terrible for both of us!
    Thanks again for your help.

CARO thanks for your advice and Congratulations. He is such a beautiful little man but he is very unhappy-- I just want him to stop hurting and be a happy little bubba.

If there's no improvement on the Gaviscon I'll have to try the formula. The paed. has said I can continue BFing and that the formula is just to confirm his diagnosis but if Hamish is still going to be in pain if I continue to BF I may have to reconsider.
