Does anyone's DP fly in/out (work away)?

    Hi All,

Just interested in finding out there who else in either TTC thread and also the BB thread who might have DP's that work away ?

In WA I'd expect there'd be a few, with the amount of mining that's going on here at the moment.

My DH works in a nickle mine and flys in/out 8 days on:6 days off, then 4 days on: 3 days off. It makes our TTC a little complicated sometimes !! And sometimes when he's away I feel a little flat. But I still keep pretty busy.

Part of me also is worried how we / I will manage with a little bub, with a fly/in out schedule. I'd really be interested in chatting to some ladies who are in this situation (or TTC)

If there's enough of us maybe we can start up our own regular thread !

My XH wasnt in the mining world, but he was navy and when they were doing workups, we would be in on the weekends, and gone for the ntire weeks for at least a month or so, then leave on deployment. I know its not quite the same, but we were TTC as wel. I found out i was pregnant 1 week after he left on a 5 month deployment... he missed alot of my pregnancy.

My SIL is FI/FO (she works in a mine up near newman)

My Dh works in a mine, but he is still local and works 4 on, 4 off, 4 nightshift, so I wondered too how I would cope during the night shift etc when I am by myself, but I think it will be OK. I know it isn't the same as FIFO, but I can sympthise a little with you Deni.

My DH doesn't work inthe mines, but he is away with work ALOT. He's gone for maybe 2 weeks, then home for four or five days, then gone again.
This month I was lucky, because he was home on my Ovulation days, so we managed a lot of BDing in a short time!!!
AF is due in two days, and I'm realllllyyyy hoping it doesn't show up, because I know DH's schedule next month means he won't be home at the optimal time....
It's hard to have you partner away and not there to be sharing all the little special moments and hard times that this TTC journey provides. Isn't it?
Chin up sweetie, we can stick together.
    Big hugs

H2B (getting married in 62 days) works in an open coal field in outback SA - and I live 5.5 hours south in Adelaide. Sometimes we can go entire months without seeing each other - hence making TTC extrememly difficult at times.
At the moment, especially with the wedding so close I've just relaxed on the whole TTC issue - at least until honeymoon
I'm going to transfer out to his town with my work - lucky they have a branch there after the wedding. That should help with the timing side of life - but it won't fix the low sperm count H2B has learn't he has. Until then I'm just having all my specialist appts etc, and getting acupuncture - anything to help increase the chances of a BFP in the near future.

Deni - are you following DH to and from work, or do you stay at ur normal residence when he's away?

My DH works 7on 7off (days and/or nights) and we can go a week without even seeing each other. So sometimes we can miss a whole 'window of opportunity' for the month. It can also make it really hard to schedule appointments, because it's not like he can just have a morning off to see the FS. Thankfully he has a boss who went through IVF too and it makes it easier to explain why he CAN'T do overtime etc.
When you think about it there are lots of jobs out there that need shift workers, and travelling etc, so i don't think we are alone. Keep smiling

Thanks for all your responses, good to know I'm not alone !

simone - missing lots of your pregnancy must've been hard for you both, especially your first one. I'm glad my DH only has short periods of time away.. but still if we have a little bub, lots can happen in even a few days!

kristabelle - yes the working away is hard with the TTC - even with OPKs, I only get 1 or 2 days' warning. DH is changing his schedule this month and did last as well, but we can't keep that up if we're still TTCing the next 12 months !! (gawd, hope it doesn't take that long !!!) Thinking positive sperm-meets-egg vibes for you!

leesa - that'll be much better for you both, being together on-site. I don't have that option, as DH's mine isn't residential - it's just a bunch of transportables around a mine pit and airfield.. in the middle of no-where !! maybe if we have a baby we might consider working at a residential post in a small town. But then I'll still be away from friends/family which would also be hard.

Sheree - my best friend works shift work and she has the same worries too. Her schedule is all over the place, so she faces coming home from night shift to having to mind a baby during the day while DH is at work. She hasn't had a bub yet though so maybe they'll work out something to help them through it, as I'm sure you and your DP will too. Do you have family in your town?

Kotara - all the best for your IVF & catching DH at the right time ! I made an initial FS appointment for next month but I don't think DH can attend... (I'm secretly hoping I'll get a BFP and have to cancel it anyway!)

    Hey Deni,

I can also say i know how you feel, My DH works on the mines too his fi/fo roster is 2wks on then 1wk off. It does make things hard. I was due to ovulate 4 days before dh arrived home but it was late and we got a bfp, we did not expect it!!

Hopefully you will get your bfp soon.

    Hi Deni,
I work admin on a mine site, in a regional area however, and all I can say is there are a lot of guys here who have 2,3,4 and 5 kids, mostly conceived on FI/FO rosters, so take heart, it is definitely possible. I see the proof of it here.
Chin up, it can be done...

    Hi Deni,

My DH has not long got out of the mines, part of the reason was for like you said they are never home......it's not a very good family life. The money is good however i think seeing your children growing up is far more important then earning top $$$$, you can always get money but you can't always have your childrens' childhood years back...once they are gone that's it.

Anyway my husband is now working in a sugar mill on the North Coast, he is living with my parents while i stay at home (6hrs away) and sell our house down here. It's hard at times but i know it's only a short term thing....just as well !!
So yes i do understand what you are saying it makes things difficult especially when you are TTC, fingers crossed you will get your BFP soon ......maybe then your DH won't want to keep going away to work!!

Goodluck with it all and i really hope a BFP comes your way soon.

Thanks girls - all the best for you too ! I guess we'll work things out as we go. And if it gets too hard we'll have to re-think things job-wise. Hopefully we'll get a BFP this cycle then at least the cycle timing part can take a break for a while!

    Hi Deni,
There are great things about Fly in/out etc type work too, so try to focus on that. If my DH worked normal hrs in the city, i'd probably only see him for a couple of hours at night anyway. Some DPs only see their kids in the weekend, and never get to do all the weekday things like baby check-ups and drop off/pick up from kinder & school etc.
Hope you get BFP this time, so you don't need to worry about the timing side of things for a while.
    Good luck
    Jo

    Hi Deni
I am new here and this is my very first post!
I know how frustrating it can be TTC with DH working on the mines FIFO. My DH was working remote in the Murchison for 3 years and we decided that TTC and having a family was not so great on a FIFO roster. We tried for 6 months at end of 2005 beg of 2006 and not once did he end up home when i ovulated :frown:
We decided that it was time to make a move from lovely Perth that had been our home for nearly all our lives and move to Kalgoorlie. He is residential now and even though we see each other every day instead of every other week it has still taken us 10 months of trying and still no BFP.
Like Westy said FIFO is very hard on mums with bubs because they have to rely heavily on their other family members for support so it is very important to have someone to lean on for help
I got to agree with S'rose, there are lots of FIFO babies out there!

Keep on chuggin along.... it only takes one little

Thanks kotare and muljh, yes muljh I agree there are heaps of positives to FIFO, i too thought of the fact that DH will be home during the day with baby which will be lovely. Just the TTC bit is tricky, and I expect that sleepless nights initially with a newborn may be tough! I hope you both get your soon !!

I hear your headache but take heart, it can work out easier than you think! My man is a pilot and whilst our home in in Malmö, Sweden, his base is Sandefjord in Norway and he has a 7/7 schedule. He leaves each wednesday and returns each wednesday and we're pretty used to it now.

When we decided to TTC, I plotted in my prospective ovulations for the coming 6 months into fertilityfriend.com and found out that he was going to be away during my peak fertile periods for the next 5 months......urgh....this was disheartening at the time but as it turned out, I actually ovulated 3 days late in our first month of TTC (the body can do amazing things when it really, really wants to conceive!) and badda-boom-badda-bing....baby on the way!

I think in the future it'll be hard at times when he's away and I feel frazzled but on the other hand, when he's home, he's totally off work and is free to spend all the time in the world with baby so I can plan my 'me time' for then!

Don't worry too much, you'll find your rhythm. We even have friends with kids where both parents are pilots or one is a pilot and one is a flight attendant and they seem to make it all come together nicely.

expat - how great that your body managed to get the timing right in the first month ! congratulations on your pregnancy !! Sounds like you and your DP are in a good rhythm managing his schedule. Will you be moving back to Aust when the baby is born, or have you guys developed a good friendship/expat support in Sweden?
