Exclamation * What to say when you're not drinking

Hi guys - thought I'd ask for some tips.

I'm starting TTC next month and wouldn't you know it, right at that time we are going away for a week with friends. Now I'm not a heavy drinker but do have a couple of glasses of wine when socialising. Of course I'm not drinking at the moment and this will be noticed!! I don't want anyone to know that we are TTC.

What are some tricks/tips that you have used or heard of that you can use to avoid your friends being suspicious??

Obviously being the designated driver is an easy one but we will be staying with our friends so that wont help in this situation.

    Any ideas? :-k

    Thanks Karen

Just say you have a headache or you think you are coming down with something and feel quite nauseaus.

I will let you know if I think of anymore. Otherwise you could say you had a big night the night before and the thought of another drink could make you puke

    *hugs*

I started drinking a lot of "vodka and orange" or "vodka and soda".....or lots of "white wine with soda"........always in a tall glass, loads of ice, loads of mixer. Often DH would organise drinks, so he would offer me the vodka and orange" or "vodka and soda".....and then just not bother adding the alcohol, so I would have a long soft drink, but everyone thought I was madly chugging back the vodka! Just be sneaky!

If I had to have wine to avoid the "why aren't you drinking questions (before I was pregnant, I am embarassed to say that I was considered by my friends to be a bit of a lush!).....then I would accept the glass and "pretend" to sip on it......it's amazing how you can con people!

I found it hard in some respects, because of my "reputation", but very easy to resist tempation and not to drink, as I honestly just didn't feel like it.......

Tell 'em your on some sort of drugs for some infection/condition (??) that you can't mix them with alcohol. Antipsychotic meds?? That'll keep 'em guessing and take the focus right off TTC!!!

Thanks Cailin I've jsut got to be a bit more assertive I suppose.

Lucy - I know what you mean about having a rep for being a bit of a lush - it will be really obvious if I don't drink!! I like your idea though of having mixed drinks that way you can just have the mix!! Also just taking a glass and sipping!

I also thought accepting a glass of wine and then when DH has gone through half of his discretely swap for my glass - poor DH will be sloshed!!!

Hayseed - now that's funny - that would really steer them away from thinking about TTC!!! Starts some funny rumours!! =D>

You can also have apple cider - looks like wine but non-alcoholic.

Anyone else have any ideas for keeping friends/family off the trail that you're TTC???

as for the drinking one - just say you're the designated driver! You can usually get away with that one.

Drastic measures for keeping details of TTC quiet....move interstate!!! LOL We conceived in Sydney and didn't have any trouble keeping it a secret! Then we moved back to Adelaide to have him!

    Best of luck TTC

I was at a BBQ 2 weeks ago and found myself in the same position and I got away with it by drinking apple cidar in a wine glass. Nobody even asked or suspected anything, by the time everyone was bugging me to have 'another' drink, it was the end of the night and everyone else was to drunk to realise I was onto water by then.
Have a great night out and don't worry to much about the whole non drinking issue

I would say the "I'm on antibiotics" to be the best answer to why your not drinking, but then you will need a answer for why your on them. I think telling them you just had some dental work done, that way if they have seen seen or heard from you before your night out then they wont say oh you didn't look/sound sick.

I had this problem last night at a house party we went to. By the time we got there everyone was drunk though (that's the UK's binge drinking problem for you!) so no one noticed that I was just drinking the mixers. It was strange how often people came over and inspected my glass to see that I had enough to drink though. At one point I got fed up of orange juice so I had some water and someone remarked on it and I said "Oh I'm just having a break, pacing myself" from orange juice obviously! My DH and I virtually gave up drinking last year anyway (I probably had about a glass of wine a fortnight) as it wasn't helping his depression and we felt so healthy having done it (he lost two stone too- that's lager for you) that we haven't been tempted to go back to previous levels. It's scary though how much social pressure there is to drink and of course when you don't everyone just assumes you're TTC! When someone does notice that I'm not drinking and starts poking I generally say that I've got a headache and have just taken pills or that I've got a hangover or that I'm on a detox diet. We used the detox diet excuse last year to cover the fact that neither of us was drinking as my DH didn't want any of our friends or family to know about the depression and it did seem to work as it wasn't far from the truth!

I use sparkling grape or apple juice- if you get quite sneaky and do not mind it a bit flat - salvage a sparkling wine bottle and decant it into there and take it round open (say you started early) - the only problem is keeping other friends away from your bottle...

    Hi Ladies

I found out I was pregnant the day before New Years Eve 2004!!

We had a Cowbys & Indians dress up party to go to and had all been talking about how spazzo we were going to get!!!

I took along dry ginger ale and used the ole "im on antibiotics and cant drink/mix" . . .which worked for a while as I had been sick with tonsilitis the week before.

Just before midnight, my husband who'd had a few beers by that stage ended up telling all our friends!! LOL!! I didnt even know he'd spilt the beans until my girlfriends came up to me saying "uh hum . . have you got something to tell us???" . .. .

I guess the excitement was to much for poor DH to bare!!!!!

Yes, a tricky one if you're known for having a few drinks.

I've found ginger beer to be a good alternative. Looks alcoholic, sounds alcoholic (to the completely uninitiated, of which I have discovered there are quite a few) and tastes fab. I'm a bit partial to the Bundaberg one. It even comes in a beer-like bottle. Also, if you are up the duff, remember that ginger beer is great for nausea =)
