I think there is certainly a reason for it - but with caution. I have a friend who had the surgery years back and lost lots of weight but was uncomfortable and didn't enjoy the tiny amounts of food she could eat. She was considering having it reversed.
I know that nutrition counselling is very important afterwards as it can be easy to miss out on essential nutrients when tiny amounts are being eaten.
