Anyways I think that since the 'stolen generation' inquiry they are very careful about who can adopt Australians.

I think we had some assumptions and misunderstandings there - I assumed purlejo's DH was meaning he didn't want a child that didn't look like an Anglo, which is what a lot of people still mean when they use the generic "Australian". That's why I was trying to point out that you can't describe a typical Australian any more, we are all different colours and nationalities. When it comes to Indigenous Australians that is a different issue entirely, and you're right they're very careful about who can adopt the Indigenous children, rightly so. I myself would love to adopt an Indigenous child but I know I do not have the cultural background to do them justice in their upbringing in keeping with their heritage.
I hope that clears up my position somewhat.
