    Show us your lunchbox!

Just made a variant of the nigella banana choc muffin. Substituted the veg oil with coconut oil. Now the house smells of coconut. Thanks for the inspiration you all.

Awesome thread. I haven't read past the first page, but I want to, so subbing! DD starts kindy on the 11th Feb, and DS1 starts pre school 2 days a week next week.

We often have in the freezer-

Frozen piklets (usually with grated/mashed banana, apple, pear, berries mixed into the batter)
    Fruit muffins
    Vege/zucchini slice
    bacon and cheese muffins
Biscuit dough roll (I cut off a few 'slices' to bake the night before for their lunches)
    Cup cakes

    Lunches usually consist of either-

    Ham/cheese sandwiches
    Egg/Lettuce sandwiches
    Cheese/vegemite sandwiches
    Baked beans in a container
    cold tuna and potato salad
    Boiled egg/cheese bits/carrot sticks/capsicum/crackers

When I say sandwiches, it is on either 'normal' wholemeal or multigrain bread or 'circle' bread (like labanese bread/tortillas etc) or in pita pockets or mini bread rolls.

Change of plans as DD1 begged for leftover chilli for lunch, its her favourite meal

    Leftover Lunch

Hoping the tomatoes get eaten but I dont like my chances. She did pick them from Mums garden so hoping that helps. WOuld like to have added Avocado (in the morning) but we have run out

So glad there is a fridge in each classroom so I dont have to worry about ice bricks

I am all baked out now, this thread got me all inspired so I have made Anzac biscuits, Olive's date balls, LimeSlice's Mango Cupcakes and had my first every go at making scrolls! No more room in the freezer for anymore baking anyway, unless I turn the chest freezer back on!

Awesome sauce it feels good doesn't it. And bar anything it's soooo much cheaper. And I hate making sandwiches.

Oh my reading this has almost made me want to move back to the UK where most schools do school dinners. I am such a believer in eating main meal of the day at lunch time - am I correct in thinking that when at school even if you order lunch in - it is still of the several 'snacks' variety rather than a hot/main meal? Where do kids eat meals at school? Do they have plates and knifes and forks etc or is it all out of the lunchbox.

    Lunchbox inspections sound horrific.

I am enjoying all the recipes though

I've just done the food shopping and have all the ingredients to make:

    Cheesy vegemite scrolls
Ham, cheese, onion and capsicum scrolls
    Banana and rolled oat muffins
    Alphabet pikelets

I think Sunday will be my baking day

DDs Class eat at their class tables, we dont have a canteen so lunch orders are from the local deli and are limited to sandwhiches, rolls, pies and pasties. No cutlery unless they bring their own. DD1 had leftover chilli so I sent a spoon today

After watching Jamie Olivers show that was about School Lunches in the US Im a bit sceptical about what my children might be given to eat, and while DD1 makes generally good food choices DD2 needs more direction/encouragment to make good choices.

DD2 always eats a better lunch than dinner so Im really concious of trying to give her a filling healthy lunch with a decent amount of protein as she doesnt eat much protien at dinner as a rule

Go jaycee! I wonder if we will be this enthused come term4

DD started school today and im already stumped lolll

    You guys sound so healthy.

DDs first lunch was frozen blueberries (fail coz the juices went everywhere
Loll) and a ham sandwich and a slice of cheese.

DD is a terrible eater so most food came back.

Went to get lcms today. Are they lunch box approved?

Yes that show was quite horrific - but quite different to my experience of school lunches in UK - we got no choice of food at all (until secondary school) and although not that exciting was reasonably healthy. We were at tables of 8 - two from top class so 10-11 years old were the 'servers' who dished out the food and the other 6 a mix of years. You could take sandwiches if you want (I remember begging my mum) but we were never allowed (as a mum I can see why now) and out of 10 tables only one was for sandwiches so the majority had school dinners.

LCM's are fairly easy to make yourself. Not any healthier than the store brought ones, but they are definitely cheaper! Just google 'home made LCM's'.

As to weather or not they're lunch box approved, it would depend on the strictness of the school's food policy. They aren't of any real nutrition and some schools have a blanket ban on chocolately stuff, so if you made the choc ones, they might not pass the test at school!

We make lcm type bars with rice bubbles, peanut butter, honey and sultanas just waiting to find out if our classroom is nut free.

I make LCM's minus the PB. And they aren't necessarily healthy but they have got to be healthier than processed food They taste better too.
