I might have a go at the malt extract - I love that flavour. For a while earlier this year I was having carob, rice protein and banana smoothies (just a phase) and they were pretty good...
I called in to Mrs Flannery's on the way home from work today, to get more b12 tablets (I'm addicted to Thompson's brand) they had none, so I walked out with $60 worth of groceries instead. I can never resist their tamari almonds! I also bought some rice bran flakes, and couldn't stop nibbling on them when I was unpacking, so had them with dried fruit and soy milk for dinner.
Funny, because when my mum was pg, apparently she lived on Special K. I'm feeling like maybe I could do the same now...

My god this thread makes me so hungry girls!! These recipies sound divine, im definately going to be trying out ALL of the food mentioned.
    Welcome Vitrar!
Vegie delights... my downfall! There is something about the smoked deli round rashers and the bacon that I cant resist. It never lasts more than 2 days here. On a sandwich with avo is my favourite. And once I start I cant stop! This is going to sound so bad but I was eating one in the bath only the other night Who eats in the bath?! lol

I havnt been to mrs flannerys but I know ther is one at the hyperdome so I might check it out. My friend gets her wasabi peas from there... oh so addictive! And where do I find these vegan tim tams?!?!!??!?! I must try them!

I have tried pretty much nothing of anything mentioned(never even cook polenta!) so this thread will give me the motivation I need, as I LOVE food and eat alot(can you tell by the sandwich in the bath??) but I find Im just so sick of cooking all the same things.

Anyone been to 'Morroccan soup bar' in Melbourne? Another excellent vego eatery.
Hope your all having a great day

Hi girls - sorry I've been MIA, laptop needed repairing!

Last night was a boring curry night: peas, carrots, cauliflower, potato in coconut curry sauce with jasmati (basmati/jasmine) rice. No idea of what's on the menu tonight... have a few zucchinis in the fridge that need to be used - maybe zucchini soup! Love soup! Yeah ordinary I know...

Someone mentioned Soulmama before - I lived there during my pregnancy! The desserts are to die for. I wonder what soy cream they use, it's delicious. I love the chocolate and orange sago with soy cream!

Will be back later, keep the ideas coming!

We went to Soulmama on my hens' night, had a lot of cheeky fun!

Holly - I did a blistered zucchini and lemon pasta a while ago, posted about it in my BellyBuddies thread. Fried off garlic, added sliced zucchini on high high heat, til it started to blister, then juice of one lemon, dumped in heaps of rocket and then the cooked pasta. Yums.

There's two brands of vegan tim tams - one is the Freedom Foods brand, called Chocolate Hazelnut Delight, or Deluxe or soemthing. They're individually wrapped and have about a billion calories each, but they are SO nice!
The other is Leda brand, comes in a gold and brown package. Much more like conventional tim tams, not as naughty. Leda also make a great coconut biscuit and gingernut biscuit.

Which reminds me of a favourite dessert:
    Vegan Chocolate Mousse
Melt 1 block vegan chocolate with 1 block silken tofu and 1/2 cup sugar (any sort - I just use raw) Whizz with food processor/mouli/egg beater until smooth. Pour into individual serving glasses, layered with coconut biscuit crumbs and some kind of strong fruit (raspberry, strawberry, passionfruit, caramelised pear etc) chill for 30-90 minuted, serve.

Snugglybean pack your bags- your coming to live with me and be my full-time cook! Dear lordy that sounds sooooooooo good!
Where do I find these Tim Tam substitute biccies??

Just finished lunch finally and Im so full. Made a quick pasta with zucchini, broccoli, onion, sweet potato and a bunch of herbs. Took me almost an hour to get DD to have her nap and in the process over cooked the pasta and the vegies were burnt around the edges... gave it a rustic feel

HollyM- I love making soups too, one of my fav is roast pumpkin and garlic

    Butternut Pumpkin
    Onion
    Whole bulb garlic
Whatever vegies you have ie potato, sweet potato

Cut pumpkin into tiny bits, slice bulb of garlic through the middle leaving all the shell on, toss with oli oil and roast till nice and crispy on the edges. When done peel the garlic and mash then chuck it all in the one pot with vegie stock or just water then cook for however long you want. It can pretty much be eaten strait away but I usually give it half. Add a bit of chilli too for bite. You will be doing rancid garlic farts all night and the next day but its worth it

In the Czech Republic (I lived there for a while) they do a garlic soup - it is just smashed garlic cloves, caraway seeds and broth with flatbread strips in it. Makes you do shocking farts, but it it sooooo good!

Tim Tammys can be found at Woolies, my IGA also has them, Coles has been hit and miss. They're usually in the health food or gluten free area, as they are also gluten free.

Another nice bikkie to look out for (I find it in the 'naytura section of woolies) is the lemon wafers. I think the brand is something like Erskal. Last time I had them I am pretty sure they were vegan. Yuuuuuuum. But very morish.

Oh, yeah, naytura also do one called "flax snax" it's basically a flaxseed and pear juice mash up bikkie. Huge, yum, filling, good.

LOL at Peach eating in the bath! That does sound good though, deli slices and avo. Put a bit of tomato in there too, would be perfect. I know whats going on this weeks shopping list

Those Frys shepards pies are to die for, never knew they had sausage rolls though! I will be on the look out from now on. I love their schnitzels, though Frys can be pretty expensive next to vegie delights..

One of the easiest vego alternatives for me is lentils! I get vegie mince now and then, but lentils are a much cheaper and healthier option. I substitute mince with lentils in spag bol, lasagne, mex-lasagne, tacos etc.. They actually taste meaty in those meal, and I reckon they would be more filling too. So cheap too, I just get the canned brown ones at Aldi 99c a can, cheaper than $6 for mince and so versatile and delicious.

I would love to become a vegan but I am worried I would miss cheese a lot. Is the vegan cheese any good? Are there any cheap brands? Can you get vegan haloumi? I already use Soy milk instead of regular milk (not that I've had any in weeks, due to NVP). What about egg replacements for baking? Any recommendations there? Oh and are all those vegan alternatives a source of calcium?

I use no egg for cakes etc. It seems fine.
I am meeting up with some vegan friends next week and we are going to try some vegan cheese recipes. I haven't tried too many commercial ones yet - just the tofutti non-cheese spread which is nice - more like sour cream though

    Chocolate bavarian cake for dessert!

EVERYONE says "Oh, but I'd miss cheese..." Even I used to. Try 6 weeks without cheese, and you'll find that it's really not that important. Yeah, it tastes great, but it's really not that good for you.
The hardest part about being vegan is not giving up cheese. It's checking the labels on everything - savoury crackers, even plain ones, so often have dairy products in them. Popping in to someone's house, or an out of office meeting, not being able to have a cuppa if there's no soy milk (yeah, probably better off withut it!)

No, there's not an amazing vegan cheese. Cheezly is pretty good, if you *have* to have something, but at $8 a block, we just don't bother very often (did tonight, with nachos, and honestly, hardly noticed it) I make a great cheese sauce out of Tofutti cream cheese, and the Tofutti mozarella style slices are quite good in a toastie (but again, so exxy that it's a real treat food)

We've just adapted most of our meals to not have cheese in them at all, rather than substitute, and I miss it far far less than I thought I would. For example, a cheesy fatty potato bake of the past is now potatoes par-boiled then roasted with garlic, tossed with cherry tomatoes, green beans, crushed pistachios/pinenuts and dressed with olive oil and balsamic. Just as much protein, heaps of flavour, far less saturated fat. Anywhere that we would have had cheese, we just put in something else with heaps of flavour, like herbs, or lemon juice, or toasted nuts, sesame seeds or whatever.

Although I did get really drunk last year and eat some blue cheese. It was a funny morning after moment, remembering with a groand and saying "I can't believe I did that..." only it wasn't pashing a stranger, or dancing on a table, or convincing some Canadian tourists that I was a world air guitar champion... it was eating cheese. lol.

To make our vegan cheese we are going to be working from the 'uncheese' cookbook. Some of it supposedly is pretty good. The girl who owns the book swears by the grilled cheese sandwiches. She says it is just like a normal cheese sandwich. So there are definitely options.
I am trying to lose some weight and cheese is pretty much out for me. I want to go more vegan anyway. We were before but went back to vegetarian.
SB - I agree with you. It is so frustrating to have milk added to so many unneccessary things. Plus it seems so much harder for friends to cater for you.
I think I am going to go vegan but be more relaxed if we are out or at a friends house.

I have heard that uncheese is pretty good - I'm not a nooch (nutritional yeast) lover though, so never tried it. I wonder if I'm missing out.
Maybe I'll come to Rocky and you can change my mind, Krys

I'm barging in here again lol. We have been dairy free for 2 1/2 years now... we have found some things that work in a replacement way... like I use rice milk and sugar and reduce it on the stove top for ages to make sweetened condensed milk for deserts. I have also been known to blend silken tofu to replace sour cream etc....

I made fudge a few months ago reducing the rice milk to make the sweetened condensed milk and dark chocolate.

I've used the tofutti better than cream cheese to make cheese cake before.... it turned out fantastic. I used mostly that and blended tofu!

I made vegetable puffs today with a vegan puff pastry. Yummo, the girls ate them up and DH & I ate the left overs that were supposed to be for tomorrow... lol.
