Becci, I had the insulin drip during labour. They took BSL's every hour and once they got over 7.5 they put in the drip. Even without eating apparently the body can metabolise the sugar out of your cells. So they use an insulin drip to keep the levels lower so the baby isn't overloaded with sugar, overproduces insulin and ends up with really low bsl's/coma. I think the majority of people are o.k without it, it is mostly high insulin users that end up needing it. By the end of pregnancy I was on 124 units of insulin per day which is apparently quite high.
Townsvillegirl, I agreed to induction last time at 39+3 weeks after holding out as long as I could. The pressure they put on you is horrible. I was already 3cm dialated when they inserted the gels, started contractions straight away, had them 3 minutes apart all night and by morning was still only 3cm. I think my labour would have been waaay shorter if I had been allowed to go into labour naturally which I am certain would have happened within a couple of days anyway.
Can't remember who asked about bub being taken to special care, but I would fight fight fight. It is not standard for every hospital. Negotioate to have bub with you and to only have him/her taken to special care if the blood sugars get near the danger levels. They are only taking bub to save themselves having to walk to your room to monitor baby. They will take a reading at birth, then every 3 hours until 3 normal results are recorded (from memory).
AFM, I am feeling quite optimistic that I might be free of GD this pregnancy. I am now just over 33 weeks, passed a GTT at 24 weeks and have been monitoring fasting and 2 hours after dinner since then. I have had a couple of just over results but 99% of the time my BSL's have been fine and I haven't even been eating a particularly low GI diet. I soooo hope I don't get it. I was assured by every medical professional that I would after being on such a high dose of insulin last time. It is the difference between travelling two hours to the nearest hospital to birth and DH not being there (has to look after DS) or having bub at the local birth centre/home with DH there. Fingers crossed.
