I use to think the same thing as well Leasha, that it had to actually be cash. Then I had a friend who ordered a lounge from out of town, and paid 'cash' when it was delivered..her cash was a cheque though. I found it weird.
I went into Good Guys while visiting my parents a few weeks ago, to get a rice cooker for DH as he was cooking dinner for everyone. Anyway, no one was around, so i just picked up the rice cooker and took it to the counter, they then called someone to the counter to take it and me back to their little computer so they could give me a discount. I thought if i took it to the counter myself, that they wouldn't give me a discount, but they did.
To really get the benefit, you have to haggle. I bought a laptop for a friend the other day at Good Guys, ticketed at $1050. They immediately offered it to me for $1020 for cash. I sent them back to pretend to work something out a couple more times because I wanted it for $950. We haggled it down to $960. I was pretty proud of myself actually, I almost never haggle (because we always seem to be buying things on finance) but this friend had the cash in her purse so away we went.
The Good Guys down here will knock more $$$ if you give them cash in the hand. The price on the ticket is what you pay eftpos or cc. Some cc's ie amex incur a surcharge on top of the ticketed price so I've been told
I recently paid for a new washing machine at the Good Guys using a credit card and got the cash price - it was about $20 off or something. Plus I got a $100 store credit for buying a washing machine that week - it was a promotion they had going that I didn't know about, so that was a nice bonus lol, I went back later and got a food processor for free.
We bought something there not long ago, can't remember what it was, but the salesgirl said they don't really do that anymore, they just offer the discount straight off....but then again, they still advertise it, so maybe they do go lower if you're loud or something
