We bought something there not long ago, can't remember what it was, but the salesgirl said they don't really do that anymore, they just offer the discount straight off....but then again, they still advertise it, so maybe they do go lower if you're loud or something

All those electrical stores have such a huge mark up on their stock that it is easy for them to do a discount price. They only have to make a certain minimum percentage of profit on each product and they have room to move with any profit margin higher than that. Their 'discounts' are quite often still much bigger than the profit margin they want to make.

My DH was a sales rep to electrical companies for a couple of years. He also said you are more likely to get a bigger discount if you don't use a great deal of their time. If you go into buy something and um and ah for a couple of hours, they won't mark things down as much as if you go in and buy something quite quickly because you have used more of their time.

I don't know if every sales person is exactly the same - individual sales people have a lot more power than they let on and sometimes it is worthwhile talking to a different sales person if the first one just won't budge (try and find one that looks desperate for a sale - most have to sell a minimum amount to get commission paid and they have targets they are meant to be meeting).
