I can't bring myself to read the article. I was really excited to hear she had planned a HB and bummed for her that she transferred. I'm shocked at the media circus...what's the problem??Nothing went wrong, HB is safe, she transferred because she needed to. Why do they keep assuming midwives are not medical professionals too?!
Errrr....
Midwives are not experts? How insulting. The fact that midwives pick up on problems and transfer when necessary is PROOF that it is safe for pete's sake! And it's mean to belittle a brand new mum like this - shame! But let’s face it – heart attacks and cancer are “natural” too. That doesn’t mean you want to tackle either of them without the help of a medical expert.
Those wanting state-funded homebirths are also welcome in WA![]()
Did she have a bad outcome? How did the HB go 'wrong'? Sounds like back up hospy transfer worked just fine. AND she had a c-section, so hospy couldn't deal with complications, either...hence the surgery.
Ugh. I wish they could go home to escape the glare![]()
Haven't read the article yet but it sounds like Dannii and her birthing 'team' took whatever situation they were given and made choices they thought were in mother and baby's best interests - and I applaud them for that! I'm bummed for her that it didn't go the way she had planned, and REALLY p*ssed that the media circus is kicking her while she's down by throwing around accusations about her desire for a homebirth.
Welcome earthside, little dude, glad to hear you're safe and sound, I wish you and your mama all the best for a speedy recovery from a difficult delivery!! I hope they're enjoying getting to know each other and that Dannii isn't taking the media's and public's uninformed comments and judgments on her choices to heart.
Exactly, so she didn't get to 'homebirth' (but got to labour at home, yay!), but she didn't have a HB 'go wrong' because she transferred before things could actually 'go wrong'! It would have 'gone wrong' if everyone had insisted they continue without intervention![]()
Anyone see the segment on Today Tonight? They presented a reasonably balanced argument surprisingly. Andrew Pesce even spoke a little sense at one point..WTF!
Really? Oh, maybe I shouldn't have turned it off then. As soon aas Andrew Pesce came on I changed the channel![]()
LOL PZ!
Yeah he kinda summed it up as ultimatley it's the woman's choice but she needs to realise that in some cases a HB will not be possible and a hospital, necessary.
But of course we already knew that Mr Pesce....why is it that pro homebirthers are always perceived to be somewhat selfish. Danni Minogue's birth is what I would call a responsible homebirth not one gone bad!
Anybody watch the 7pm report?
They were talking about it there as well, they had some bigwig Ob/Gyn on (someone with a better memory can fill in the gaps) ; even I with my limited knowledge could see that it was only one side of the argument and I want to know, when is the media going to speak to someone for the pro-homebirth side of the debate?
Seriously, it's doing my head in, I cannot believe this is all we have heard so far!![]()
The AMA created some study that manages to support their claims of increased neo-natal deaths and they like to quote it. It includes births without assistance though and I'm pretty sure all sorts of other unreliable information. As for the claim that 50% of first time mothers transfer in a HB- this was also mentioned in the senate enquiry and they asked for the reference which wasn't supplied. I'm not sure that it's base don any fact.
Grrr.I have no words.I am so over reading this kind of thing.
A really great article about the safety of HBs. It dissects the flawed SA article the AMA like to keep pushing and shows better stats such as:
StatisticsOnly 1,141 of these were planned homebirths and they were found to result in a similar overall rate of child deaths compared to planned hospital births (7.9 deaths per 1,000 planned homebirths compared to 8.2 deaths in planned hospital births).
For babies born at home the news is even more encouraging. There were only 2.5 deaths per 1,000 actual homebirths making homebirth 328% safer for babies than planned birth in hospital.
