Stress no barrier to IVF success

    Julia Medew
    February 26, 2011

STRESS does not affect a woman's chance of getting pregnant with IVF, research has concluded.

Doctors from Cardiff University in Britain examined 14 studies involving 3583 infertile women undergoing fertility treatment to see if anxiety levels and depression measured before treatment were linked to the outcome of a successful pregnancy or not. No link was found between the two factors.

A report on the research published in the British Medical Journal yesterday said although many women believed emotional distress contributed to their infertility and lack of success with treatment, this review showed it was not the case. The authors also noted that it debunked the fertility myth that relaxed women conceived more easily than other women.

''This [allows] doctors to reassure women that feelings of tension, worry or depression experienced as a result of their fertility problem, its treatment, or other co-occurring life events are unlikely to further reduce their chance of pregnancy,'' the authors wrote.

However, they said more should be done to help couples through infertility treatment because it was often arduous, causing about a third of people to drop out prematurely.

A cycle of IVF typically involves nine to 12 days of self-injection to stimulate egg production, followed by retrieval of eggs, fertilisation of those eggs with sperm, and then implantation of the embryo into the woman's uterus.

According to the Fertility Society of Australia, about one in six Australian couples experience infertility and about 10,000 IVF babies are born each year in Australia.

    Hi Ladies
Just another quick one. I stuggle to keep up lately. Because I wont be doing any IVF in the immediate future its hard to get on here all the time, hearing everyone getting excited. But that's not too mean I am not excited for you all because I am! I hope for the best for each and every one of you!!

Thanks for that article N2L - thought it was just a crock that stress can be a barrier!

Goodluck everyone - Hoping to see lots more BFP's in here very soon.

Tantee ~ I know how hard it is, try and take one day at a time if you can and dont go nuts reading heaps of stuff on the internet as I did that and it made me mental. and for you!! Your HCG sounds pretty good to me, all the best hun for the next scan.

AFM ~ I started to get a tiny bit hopeful because I am only at CD29 and usually my cycle are 34days and Ive had some spotting, was hoping it might have been implantation spotting but it seems to be getting worse On a positive note, I had a job interview Thursday, which went very well. Now just wait and see time, if I get it.

    Hi everyone,

    Hope you are all well!

Willi - Hope you are feeling better soon. It can be very uncomfortable can't it. I have read Sustagen (drink) is meant to help. Not sure why!

Tantee - How are you going? If I was you, I would be going insane waiting for that next BT! I hope it goes really well for you. I am looking forward to reading your good news asap!

Blossom - Hope your 2WW is going well. Thanks for your advice on other threads!

Saffy - Are you there? How are you going?

Loops - Hoping your natural cycles work out for you so you dont have to face IVF again!

Melissa - Not long now! Have you caved and POAS yet? If you havent, you're a stronger woman than me

Happybaby - good luck on your BT tomorrow. It sounds very promising though!

1morePlz - You there? Have you plans to start another cycle?

Jayejaye - How is your 2ww going?

oneday - not sure if you are lurking, but if you are, I hope you are going really well and all of those "lovely" pregnancy symptoms have well and truly set in!

I am sorry if I have forgotten anyone...Hormone brain! Needless to say, I hope everyone is feeling comfortable and relaxed and that everything is working out for you as you want it to...

afm - Day 4 of jabbing at 450 iui of gonal f. Not sure if I am imagining it but I feel a little bit more activity in my ovaries this time around. Of course, I am probably imagining it! I started on Royal Jelly capsules yesterday (couldnt get fresh). I know it is too little too late for this cycle but I figure it wont hurt. I am also contemplating starting CoQ10. I have booked my first ever acupuncture appointment tomorrow night (again, bit late). If it goes well I will make an appointment for pre and post transfer - assuming I get to transfer this time!
I have a scan and BT tomorrow morning to check number of follies and ensure no LH surge. I am really hoping I have a better response this cycle. If not, I will be mightily disappointed....

    Anyhoo, that's it for now.

    Take care x

N2L ~ Thanks heaps hun, I am hoping too that I wont have to do IVF again, doubtful but not impossible!
I take Royal Jelly tablets and I really do think they work well. Our 1st and only BFP I was on these and I def think they help my stress levels. I also like accupuncture. Goodluck with it all - everything helps. Hope you have a good scan tomorrow, FX'd for great juicy follies!

    Hope everyone is well today!

Tantee - for doubling hcg. Especially when you consider that the numbers themselves aren't so crucial; as long as they are doubling properly. FX you have a lovely number tomorrow. Do you have any symptoms as such yet? Seeing I'm at that crappy 2ww stage where absolutely anything gets scrutinised.

N2L - go little ovaries. Definitely sounds promising that you are having twinges so soon. I am guessing you didn't have this last round? Good luck for your BT and scan, hoping there are lots of lovely little follies growing away. Nope, no poas yet, though I did buy a packet today due to mini meltdown this morning. I actually feel a bit calmer now that they are there but I don't wanna know if its bad news.

Williever - awesome news about your little embies, FX you have some great ones to freeze Hope you start feel a bit better soon

Loops, Kass, Jayejaye, Blossom and anyone else that I have missed.

    Me - waiting, waiting, waiting
