    Glucose Test - Another question

WARNING - EMOTIONAL PREGNANT WOMEN AHEAD

I had my 1 hour GT on Wednesday and it came back at 8.5 (apparently anything over 7.8 you go for the 2hr test) but it's really freaking me out.

I am a healthy eater and pre-PG was on the lower BMI scale but I'm really worried now that the 2hr test is going to be high AND/OR i've read that GD can indicate potential for diabetes later in life, which i would never have thought myself to be in the risk group.
I've got to have the 3 day high carb diet prior to the test and the part that scares me is that alot of the stuff on there I would eat normally anyway, not the quantities it has but i usually have cereal for bfast, and a sandwich or roll for lunch and for dinner we either have a pasta/rice dish or a meat with potato and side of vegies. The quantities on the high carb diet are a bit extreme and i certainly don't eat that much daily but got me concerned now.

I just had a 26 week U/s and the lady told me baby is a little bigger than normal, not by much, but OB has put it down to last month I had a huge weight gain. This month was minimal as I think I pinpointed the culprit but now i'm wondering if it's GD that has made baby big but i just don't know about it yet.

Sorry for the vent and the double up on the post as i know there is already one in the thread, which i replied to, but having a moment and need to vent. To top it off we lost our family dog tonight to cancer so it's not been a good week and I guess my emotions are running at full speed.

While I can't offer any words of wisdom on the test (I've yet to have mine and I'm a bit worried about it), I just wanted to send you a big hug because it sounds like you really need one. From what I've read, a lot of people go over on the first test but are fine with the second one. Hope that is the case for you.

I'm also very sorry that you've lost your dog to cancer. My dog is getting on and I simply dread anything happening to her. So I can imagine how terrible you must feel at the moment. Some more big hugs

Sorry to hear about your high GTT result.
I never thought I would have had diabetes myself, but I do.
I even lost all this weight before I got pg and was a nice size. I ate pretty well and played sport, etc. So this diabetes stuff that I found out at 10wks was such a huge shock.
My baby isn't really any bigger then my first baby when I didn't have diabetes.
So maybe the baby just did have a growth spurt or some people just naturally have bigger babies. I'm not sure, sorry.

Try not to stress and worry yourself over it (I know it's easier said then done.)
Good luck with the 2hr one. I'm sure it'll come back fine.

    Big hugs!!

Belinda, please try not to worry. The test can be affected by your diet over the days before the test so most often a high result is nothing to worry about. The 2 hr test gives a much better indication, which is why they do that before diagnosing anything. Eat plenty of carbs for the 3 days before the test and then you should get an accurate result. I only had the 2hr test both pgs (my ob does this routinely) and first pg I was one point off the upper limit of normal (ie one point higher indicates GD) and second pg I was totally normal. The first time I didn't know about the carb diet, so I put it down to that. Please don't worry, more than likely everything is fine. Also, even if it is high, most times diet can control it and there are no ongoing issues. Big hugs hun.

I failed the 1 hour test but passed the 2 hour fasting test. The test itself was not a big deal and I had no bad effects from it. I didn't have to eat anything special before it.

At my 24 week scan I was told bubs was measuring at 5 days ahead so when I failed the first test I was sure I had GD, particularly as I'd been craving sweet stuff, am over 40, have a family history of type 2 diabetes and was overweight when I got pregnant (3 of the risk factors). I did not have GD.

Best of luck with the test.

I had a high reading for my test too, and it turned out to be nothing wrong. I think the fact that i pigged out at the movies on Malteasers and lemonade the night before I had it didn't help.
Don't worry until there is something definite to worry about. It's like a rocking chair- gives you something to do but doesn't get you anywhere!!

try not to worry, im 32 weeks and my GP has decided to send me for a 2 hr test as well and also on the 3 day diet, as my first reading was 8.5 and over the course of a week bub gained 4 cms, she said it was nothing to overly worry about, as with the hr test you don't need to fast and there is so many factors that can give you false readings. The chances are that you will come back with a normal test result, and if your levels are still high, then the doctors will more then likely manage it by diet before any other intervention...

Sending you huge hugs Belinda... I had the same problem, my 1hr test was high. My midwife said to me that they should scrap the 1hr test as so many people come back as high just because they had a meal/snack before the test that pushed them over the limit. Also Bubble has measured ahead the whole time (we know the exact dates so its not a dates thing). But after 12 weeks genetics plays a HUGE part in bubs size and length, so you can't tell by a scan whether they are big for dates or just tall/larger because of genetics!

I wasn't told to do the high carb diet but did read about it and found that it wasn't all that different to my current diet, which freaked me out a bit.

BTW I had my 2hr test last Thursday and everything came back fine Even if you do have GD, it can usually be easily maintained. Good lcuk and hope it all goes ok.

OK I'm so very confused now!!! I had the 2 hour test yesterday and today my results have come back high at 9.2

I am SO VERY confused. I do not understand how this happens when i do not eat crap and the recommended diet plan I've been sent by my OB for me to use between now and appointment with specialist is EXACTLY what i eat now, but just tonnes more of it. The 3 day diet i did prior to the 2 hour test was fine but the amount of food i had to eat was ridiculous and ended up with me feeling so full and about to explode.
I don't understand then if this is ALREADY WHAT I EAT how I now have GD and now increasing the amount i'm eating is supposed to help me.

I don't see the specialist till nex Wednesday and I feel so lost now!!!!

Judging by this it's now racing through my mind that any future pregnancies are also going to end in GD and when I asked about if it goes away after the birth the lady at OB office said "most of the time yes but can't be sure" and then when i asked if it means I'll get diabetes later in life I got the same vague response..

We have no history of diabetes in our family although my grandmother had GD during 1 of her pregnancies but that is all. I've never been overweight, under weight would be more accurate. I'm so angry/upset that i don't understand how I've been so good with what i eat during this whole PG and I end up with GD regardless..

    I can't stop crying and I don't know what i've done wrong..

The only thing I can think of is lack of exercise but it's mainly been due to the fact that by the time i get home from work i'm tired/can't be bothered and i've never been a morning person and have always struggled getting up in the morning so exercise before work is out. Could the lack of exercise be the culprit? Could me simply walking a few times a week have avoided this or can it fix it?? The thought of having to have insulin daily scares the living daylights out of me. I am not a needle fan and everyone joked about that exact thing when I announced I was pregnant because those close to me know i hate them.

Before I was PG i played sport (touch football) and went the gym so i'm absolutely confused!!!!! Why can't things just go smoothly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi Belinda,

I was a bit the same as you, healthy diet, still making it to the gym a couple of times a week during preg, healthly pre preg weight (BMI of 25ish) and no family history and I got GD too...

It has a lot to do with the placenta and how hard it is making your pancreas work and if it can cope with the increased workload of bubs (around 3 times harder then normal). I've decided that my pancreas is a bit of a lemon when it comes to pregnancy.

I was also told that the chances of it coming back next time is around 60% - however as one of the risk factors is age (and my only risk factor) there isn't much you can do about that.

You will not know how bad it is until you start measuring you BSL's after the appointment, the stuff they give you for the test is about 75grams of sugar, not something you would ever choose to consume in one go! Only about 10-15% of GD girls end up on insulin, so hopefully you should be able to avoid it. You may find on the diet your sugars are fine.

I hope that the time goes quickly before your appointment... Hugs...
