    Siatica during pregnancy.

    I am just over 17 weeks along and it seems that siatica pain has hit already.

    What things apart from taking panadeine forte or panadol can help? I've tried heat packs which are great until they go cold and you have to get up to reheat them again and again...

    Can tiger balm be used or is there a more natural way to relieve the pain?

    Take a look here hun. It's for SPD, but there are also some tips for general back pain in there too. I had both sciatica and SPD and it sucks!!

    I hope it gets better for you, nothing worse than the pain of sciatica!

    Stretching or getting physio/massage can help. i've got it too. my mum swears by accupuncture so i'm thinking i might try that.

    I second the chiro suggestion - I go every 2 weeks (thank goodness for private health) and it's kept me moving a lot better overall. I also find that gentle swimming and walking in at least waist deep water helps a fair bit too.

    I've been having heaps of siatic pain with this pregnancy since early on
    I have short hot showers and that helps, laying down for an hour or so (which is hard with a 10mth old.
    I have also consulted with and Osteopath and he said he could help me and he wouldn't crack my back just manipulate it
    So u have options out there. I was told deep heat and tiger balm and stuff like that isn't the best idea when pregnant but thats just the advice I got given maybe ask ur dr or midwife on ur next appt

    I have ongoing sciatica (not PG) and I swear by a cream called fysiocream. And stretching. I LOVE my clinical pilates. You can also try sitting/laying on a tennis ball; position it in the affected spot - helps immensely!

    HotI, if you need someone, I have a GREAT physio who combines accupuncture with treatment. I have it every session. He's in Briar Hill/Montmorency.

    Just to add I've had siatica before falling pg due to a car accident and had intensive physio. No chiro and lots of pain management. Which id prefer not to take panadeine or tramadol again...

    I'm currently in agony and will try anything natural to relieve the pain. I would rather go natural if I can. Will look into accupuncture and I've got a heat pack on at the moment. Also looking for my sheet with my stretches on. Which I have seem to have lost boo.

    have you tried ice on it? I personally find ice helps more than heat.

    Best ever stretch I've found for my sciatica is to sit on the edge of a chair, cross on ankle over the opp knee and lean forward.

    Last time I developed sciatica at about 6 weeks... I saw quite a few different physio's, an osteo and an acupuncturist. The only thing that gave me any sort of relief was wearing a pair of wedge healed shoes. They needed a decent wedge, probably about 5cm's. But they were enough to tilt my pelvis forward so that the pressure was taken off the nerve.

    At one point I was seeing a physio who specialised in pregnancy. She told me that I was the only pregnant woman she had recommended actually wear heels! But for me it really it helped. It meant I could move around with only slight discomfort, rather than agonising pain.

    I went to an osteopath. What a godsend. for you hun sciatic pain is terrible

    Conventional treatment methods involve targeting the symptoms of sciatica usually through pain relief medication. Unless you go after the underlying cause, you are not actually trying to heal yourself.

    I get bad sciatica and have for years... I mainly pit up with it and lay down on my stomach or stand like a weirdo and rock my hips. A few times i have gone in off the street to massage places crying telling them to fix it and its been ok. its only been increasing since getting preg and im dreading how it and my hips will hold out wheb i get to term!

    I for sciatica a few years ago really badly (wasn't due to pregnancy - but i just wanted to mention it to you) and ended up getting Bowen therapy done and it worked a charm!

    Has anyone heard of it? It's a natural therapy where they relax your major muscles so that your skeleton can straighten up naturally and then your muscle regain tension - I saw the guy 8 times all up for a few things and have never needed to go back for it.

    I would definitely recommend it of anyone can go - I'm sure they will still see you during pregnancy - I've seen them treat tiny little babies for colic too.

    I had a girdle, which was OK. The thing that really worked for me was 4" heels - changed my posture so my back stopped hurting so much.

    did you start wearing heels, or stop wearing them, to lessen the sciatica?

    Started - everyone told me flats were great for pregnancy, but when I slipped on a pair of heeled boots I could actually walk again, so stuck with them until the sciatica eased a few months later.

    I've tried nearly everything. My physio told me to lean against a wall and have a tennis ball where it hurts and slide up and down the wall... Well,it didn't work and I felt like a loser at work doing it.

    Still in pain. 27 weeks on Tuesday and feeling it more...
