prama - just to further answer to your question, When I talked to my GP about TTC #2 he did say in some cases diabetes can affect fertility, however there are so many other factors that need to be taken into account. Also depends on how well managed the diabetes is too I suppose.
I just did a search and found a study comparing spem from a diabetic and non-diabetic men. And there were no significant differences between the two (concentration, structure, output, motility), except for increased DNA damage in the diabetics sperm. The extent of this however is unclear, and they are not sure if it would have the same effect on fertility as something like smoking does.

Catherine - it sounds like type 1 to me... Type one is Juvenile/insulin dependent diabetes.
