i have had tonsillitis 3 times in the last 6 months and every time i go to the GP and he gives me antibiotics, which gives me the worst painful thrush (i think id much rather have sore tonsils than the thrush!!)
so my doctor has suggested i get a tonsillectomy. all the websites ive looked on say its day srgery but you should be on bedrest for a few days, is this true? i really cant when i have a teething baby!!
has anyone had one? does it hurt tonnes afterwards? (like would i be better off suffering chronic tonsillitis?) and will i still be functional?
cheers girls
o btw the thrush is vaginal not in my mouth/tonsils

Jeez, DH's had tonsilitis HEAPS this winter, one time ending up in hospital to be put on an AB IV because the oral AB's were doing nothing... and his Dr STILL won't give him a referal to get his taken out. I have heard that the older you are when you get them taken out the more it knocks you around, the recovery...
BUT
One of the girls I work with has a friend who has just got his taken out, and they botched something up with the muscles in his throat and now he has to eat and drink through a tube for the rest of his life... so I'm thinking DH's can stay there But then in saying that my nephew had his taken out and was bouncing around on the hossy bed a few hours afterwards.
I had mine taken out when I was about 15.
I kept getting tonsillitis so finally I just had to do it. It was one of the most painful things I've ever gone through but only for about a week. And after that it was absolute heaven No more freaking out whenever I felt the slightest tickle, knowing it was going to turn into a sore throat.
I'm so happy I had it done and would definitely do it again, tonsillitis is the worst
Good luck with your decision, if you have any more questions let me know
Oh honey that sucks. I've been thinking of you heaps after seeing your FB status!!
FWIW I had my tonsils out when I was 15, after recurrent infections and a whole lot of misery. I came out of recovery and ate a McDonald's Quarter Pounder and fries, went home the next day and was back doing rehearsals for the school musical within 4 days (singing, prancing around on stage and all the rest!).
That being said, they reckon the older you are, the more it knocks you around, but you're only 23 so I don't think it could be *that* bad, kwim?? You should be right if you can organise a mate or two or some family members to be on stand-by if things get too much for you to cope with after the surgery. I feel for you hun, tonsillitis is sooooo not fun and nor is being so run-down when bubs is teething!! Hope she sprouts them soon and gives you some rest so that you can get better, too! xo
How old is your little one? I have a 2 year old and I had a tonsillectomy just last week. I was in hospital over night and have not been up to doing much at all. I was also having tonsillitis every 2-3 weeks and it was just wiping me out. I had it done on Friday and have rested since. I am still on painkillers and a soft diet. DH has taken time off work to look after DS. It isn't as bad as I thought it would be but my throat has been pretty sore. I am just looking forward to being completely healed. I wouldn't do it while I had a baby teething if I could avoid it, but then I also have a clingy 2 year old who know Mum's sick so it hasn't been overly easy.
eta - it isn't worse than having tonsillitis, but there is a LOT more swelling and you tend to be doped up on pain killers. You definitely will need someone to stay and help you for about 4 days.
jacksgirl...damn that sucks, i dont have anyone to come help
i get all the other symptoms too e.g. muscle aches, sore ear/jaw, fever and headaches, nausea....it sucks so much esp when DD is sick too
If it's any consolation I am much better today than yesterday. The pain killers just zonk me out a bit and that combined with not much to eat for days makes you a bit weak. I had mine done on Friday and the surgeon said to give it about 4 days before sending DH back to work. I am just chilling out today while DS plays around me - I figure if I have been through so many bouts of tonsillitis and then the surgery I am going to make sure I am nice and rested. I still have a sore throat though and they say the sore throat lasts about 2 weeks, it's no worse that having revolting pussy tonsils though, if anything not as bad because you don't have the chills and sickness from infection.
