    Toilet Training

Lily is just over 2. She's showing all signs of TT. Loves sitting on the toilet. However, just doesn't do a wee or poo while on there. So my question is, how long should i leave her on there until she does one?

I would sit the boys on the potty for 10 mins or so.
Give her a nice big drink before and then try sitting with her and reading a story. If nothing happens try again later. Sooner or later she'll do something on there and hopefully get the idea. Good luck.

She has been wearing undies all day today. I have put her on the toilet twice today now. She has been on there for about 15mins each time. Nothing happened so i took her off. No more than a minute later though she has done a wee. So she obviously needed to go, but just wouldn't. She seems to think it is a game or something. Not swure what to do about that.

Keep it as a game for certain times of the day, so we always have Toilet time after baths and again in the morning after she's gotten up. We stopped trying to TT and will keep the toilet time just so she has some idea of what its for. Sooner or later it will click. Matilda pulls off her nappy just after she's done a wee & runs to the toilet and says "wee mummy". We're getting there, but we are also not in a hurry atm.

I know what you mean Tegan. She could just be a bit unsure about sitting down to do the deed. Does she stand up when she wees?
Maybe you have to just keep trying and get her in a sitting habit. I think 15 mins is long enough. They only have a short attention span. You don't want her to feel like she has to sit then it will become a game of control IYKWIM.

She actually squats when she wees. So i know when she's about to do one.

Is it an option to spend time outdoors without the bottom ½ clothed?

That can be a great way to encourage awareness.

A GF of mine is TT her nearly 3 year old as we speak and she runs a tap when her DD is on the loo.....apparently it was "the turning point".....instead of just sitting, her DD now sits and wees....

I gave my DD lots of nudie time and just didn't put her back into nappies. One day (a planned day) we got up and the nappies were never to go on again. This was at 22 months, but I am pretty sure she could have done it earlier anyway because for us it was a matter of me being committed to taking her to the toilet all the time. I also used diluted lemonade as a treat for the first few days to make sure she got lots of fluid and lots of opportunities to try. Then when she did a wee on the toilet she got a star sticker on her chart! Very exciting. Though sometimes lollies were a better bribe!

This is EXACTLY what happened with us when we tried. Soooo frustrating!
I'm not sure what to tell you because I decided she wasn't ready after all because of this and I decided to stop. She did this for a week, every time we sat her on there.
I'm going to try again in another few weeks.

    Hi Guys,

I am having the same prob with my son. He's 2.5 and ready to toilet train, he has no problem holding on. He will sit on the potty say "I'm finished" get up and theres nothing there. he will hang on until I put a nappy on him for his afternoon sleep. I let him run arouond with no nappy as DH ripped up all the carpet and put down uniclic laminate flooring because he recons you cant keep carpet clean so I have kept the mop ready and it hasnt been that much of an issue. The only thing I havent tried is the tap running thing which I might give a go today. My 16mth old has pulled his nappy off wee'd on the floor next to the potty and then sat on it backwards. I think he'll get the hang of it before Lachlan will. Any other suggestions? My eldest son is 10 and I cant even remember what I did with him. I went back to uni a year after he was born and then worked full time so day care did a lot of the hard work for me I think.

All i can say is keep trying.
Today he still hasnt done wees on the toilet, but i will keep my fingers crossed he will continue..........

We used bribes - chocolate, stickers etc. It worked a treat. I agree, once in knickers stay in knickers don't go back to nappies. Give yourself a week at home to get it happening. It will work if she's ready.

we also used Chocolate, this worked really well, I think we could of put Madison into undies so much ealier than we did, but oh well, I now onlu use nappies for bed times, and the rest of the time she is unddies.
Could you use some pooh bear undies etc, ans ay : don't wee on pooh bear".

Well we've had to stop because she just kept weeing all over the lounge and carpet and never in the toilet. I'd sit her on it and take her off after a while ask if she needed to wee etc and she always said no but then not 5 minutes later she did!

What I did was have a few potties around the house for a start, like in front of the TV and in the bathroom. I also put a special packet of smarties on top of the TV so that he could see his prize and everytime he asked for them or even if I'd walk past him watching tv, id tell him that when he did a wee in the potty he could have them. When we'd go for a shower I'd turn on shower and I would sit on the loo and while i was on, i made him sit on the potty too, eventually this was where he did his first "wee" or should i say about 1/2 teaspoon of wee. We made such a fuss for him, giving him high 5's and of coarse his Prize, we also made him call my mum and tell her that "he did a wee in the potty" From then on it happened really quickly, we still did the party thing when he wee'd and he got a funsize smarties for a couple more times until he really got the idea of when to go. Then it was number 2 time......

    Good luck anyway

Tegan, keep on persisting Lily will get it eventually. It can be a PITA when they keep peeing everywhere though. Tehya is great on the potty, it's just trying to get her used to wearing undies, she will wear them but I think she forgets that they aren't a nappy and wee's in them.

Do you have a potty ?? Perhaps you can put that out where it is easily accessable to Lily and let her go and sit on it whenever she wants. Tehya was doing that for a while, we just needed to catch that first wee. Once we did we were off and running.

Goodluck hun and remember try not to go cranky at Lily when she wee's elsewhere, just tell her that wee is supposed to go into the toilet or potty and better luck next time.

Tegan, just so you know we took a very realxed attitude to TTing Tehya, she decided that she was ready, not us. We simply put the potty out for her, she started taking herself to it.

I do agree that you shouldn't push it but gentle guidance (sp) is sometimes needed as it is with most things with small children. Every child develops at different rates, which I know that you already know.

How are Lily and Charlie going anyway, been ages since we've caught up.
