    Question avent bottles

hello, on my latest trip to the midwifes clinic we were discussing breastfeeding and expressing for bottles and which bottles to use (need to knwo as i have to have ct within a week or so of giving birth and will be bfg.

anyway the midwife said that the big brands - especially avent are the worst possible bottles to buy, as with the tommee tippee, and to go el cheapo as they seem to be the absolute best...

now i was looking a the avent isis IQ UNO pump, and i know you can just pour the milk into other bottles but what are ppls thought on bottle brand....
and ofcourse i will need a steriliser aswell,do i go el cheapo with that aswell? i dont mind psendingthe money.. just confused by what she has said. want to start buying these things so i need help!!!

Anything used for breastmilk only doesn't need sterilising. The aba have new guidelines for that so maybe check out their website.
I can't offer any advice for the best bottles sorry. I wouldn't think the actual bottle would matter, but rather the teat that is used, if you are talking in terms of avoiding nipple confusion.

The Avent and Tommee Tippee are the best teats as far as nipple/teat comparison goes.

I use Avent and swear by them

Im also fussy and sterilise everything!! I have a cheap Aldi one... but it looks the same as the Avent steriliser. No different at all other then the name.

I aways sterilized everything, even bottles for EBM. I used Avent and found them great, the teat didn't cause any nipple confusion and my DS took the bottle with no probs at all.

I am the same. We primarily bf but have used the occasional bottle without problems. We use the avent everything from the pump and steriliser to the bottles. No nipple confusion here either.

My midwife told me this too, she said that the cheapo ones are the way to go, but i used/use the avent ones anyway and they have been great for my DD, i have the microwave avent steriliser and its been really good!

I swear by Avent bottles. I don't like the plastic with the cheapy bottles.

My SIL bought cheapy ones (her bub hated them) and then turned around and converted to Avent and she never looked back!! On the other hand my friend bought Avent bottles and her bub refused to take it, he much prefered the cheapy teats. Moral of the story is don't go an buy a heap of bottles because your bub may not like that particular teat/brand.

I used a microwave steriliser however I will be going for an electric (Avent) one this time around. Mainly because I have a small kitchen and I can keep the bottles in the sterilizer for longer, they holds more bottles and it is neater. I found that I was for ever fumbling with the micro steriliser and moving it from one bench to the next.

I bought both the tommee tippee closer to nature and Avent although I didn't b/f they are both great we stopped using the tommee tippee as he would suck the teat to pieces

the midwives at our hospital went and on and on about using these bottles, but really in the long run some babies wont like the teat etc, I have one friends whose baby will only use PUR teats so therefore needs the narrow bottles etc

i have a couple of avent bottle as i am starting to express for a few feeds... Noah takes to it fine and i like the bottles (good quality plastic etc). I did find the teat (even newbon) allowed himt o feed quite fast and I have had pigeon teats recommended to try (i think it is the slow teat). this will fit the avent bottle too.
I also have the avent iQ UNO electric pump and I have found it fantastic - v easy to use etc
I dont have a steriliser as I dont express much (yet) - I just wash and boil the equipment and bottles... I have also bought some Milton which I can use to sterilise. I think I will get a steriliser eventually though.

I've been using the Tommee Tippee closer to nature range (bottles, teats and electric steam steriliser). No problems here either - Alessia is happy to swap from bottle to boob without a worry. I do like the electric steriliser as it can just stay on the bench top - she has a whole heap of dummies that I sterilise at once and I also pop the breast pump in there too. I have also been advised that there is no need to sterlise bottles or the pump if all they come in contact with is breast milk, but I just like the 'extra' cleanliness the steriliser affords. I guess the MCHN will advise everyone that you don't have to spend the earth on these products...at the end of the day it is personal choice and also what your baby wants which is hard to predict if they're not here yet!

My advice? Buy a few things to get you started and once you work out what bub likes, then add to your collection. I had an MRI 3 weeks post-birth and had to bottle feed Alessia exclusively for 24 hours - we coped with using just 3 bottles all up (washed and sterlised after each use of course!)

Personally, I think the Avent bottles and teats are crap. I do have some that I use, but I use the Pigeon teats with them. I also hate the way the bottles leak, none of the others seem to do that. I only got them because that's what everyone else seemed to have!

If you are planning on using them in conjunction with BF I would say they are the worst. The teats are way too fast. I have had to comp feed my DS since birth, and we had heaps of breast refusal problems while I was using the Avent. Pigeon is much better IMO, with the slow (S) or variable (Y) teats. It's much easier to 'mimic' a breastfeed with these bottles and teats. I've used tommee tippee as well with no problems.
