I got a bumbo for my niece who has cerebral palsy. She wasn't sitting independently but was able to support her own head. It was great. She loved it because she could sit up and use her arms to play. We used it as a feeding chair as well. It helped strengthen her core muscles as well, because it supports but she isn't strapped in in multiple places.
They come up on e-bay (new and second hand), so if travel is an issue you might be able to get one sent to you.
Older kids with CP use them, so a littlie with chunky thighs will definately fit.
we have a bumbo ( its nicely decorated with ball point pen , thanks to DS) and the play tray too ..
i love it alot and nixon sat in it untill he could crawl , then he would sit in it to eat something and then crawl out , i dont think it got used past 7 mths as DS was a super duper crawler and was mobile from aobut 5.5mths ..
i cant wait to sit DD in it .. it was definatley woerth the investment ..
bebe pods arent as soft and flexible as the bumbo's
We've got a bebepod and it's been great! DD loves it, even now she pulls it out and sits down in it. We used it for a while before we got the highchair and we sometimes take it around to MIL if she is eating there. She had chubby thighs as does niece and they both have no problems sitting in it.
Definitely get the tray, we never used it with just the pommel thing as we could put toys on the tray and she wouldn't keep dropping them.
We have the tray too and its great!
Another thing, dont put the bumbo in water (i have known people to use it as a bath seat) it ruins it, unless of course you dont mind paying for a new one often. And it also makes it unsafe coz it deteriorates it.
Did you know you can get a bumbo for TT? It sits on the toilet
