I think no need.. It all depends if you have the space.. for us it was just convenient to change wherever

We have one, but honestly you don't *need* one. Most of my friends end up changing their kids on the floor and keeping a secret storage in the main living areas (like a drawer or ottoman with compartment) for nappies/wipes etc when not in the room so its easy to change at a convenience.

I've found them great for both kids (had one with a bath underneath for DD & now a timber one for DS)

BUT while I was a single mum for 7 months when DD was 12 months old, I just had a thick blankrt folded into a good sixe that I kept under my fouton lounge & slid iy out when needed, so I agree its noyt necessary

ETA sorry about typos, typing in dark while feeding DS!!

I had a change mat on top of an old pine chest for the first few weeks, which was helpful for in the night time because i laid everything out before i went to bed (stack of mcn's, bowl for water, thermos with warm water in it, cloth wipes) and i could do it in complete darkness, whereas on the bed stuff rolled around. Hardly ever used it in the day though, and once she was about 3 months old i just used to put a big fat wad of extra nappy in at night and let her stay in it all night... (my mother of the year award must've got lost in the post, lol)

I would say that unless you have a medical problem that makes bending painful/difficult OR you live in a house which for some reason has no furniture of floors (i actually know a couple who were building their own house and their dining room floor was just beams until their youngest, born in the house, was nearly a year old - they had finished the bedrooms kitchen and bathroom first!) you don't NEED a change table, no.
