Default Confusion about 12 week scan/BT

OK, now I am about to change GPs because mine $hits me (another story!) but she told me if I have the 12 week scan I have a blood test TWO WEEKS later and TWO WEEKS after that I wll find out my baby's risk of Downs Syndrome. Now that doesn't seem right to me - when I was pg with Flynn I had a BT at 10 weeks and u/s at 12 wweks. Does anyone know what the heck my GP was talking about?

No idea Aurora. I have always had bloods for HIV, HepB, Iron and a few others done at 9-10wks as routine and then the option of the scan at 12-13 wks for the NT screening (I have only had this done once) and then if the results from that scan are a bit off, then you will have the follow up ones after that normally. Depending on who does your scan they should be able to give the the ratio of downs risk then and there.

I did what you describe - blood tests at about 11wks, Nt scan at 12 and results 1 day later...
If i tmakes you feel any better about your GP,mine told me my Downs risk was 1:548 only 6 weeks later when I finally saw my OB she told me the report stated that I was 1:8000...

I have no idea what she means... I had a blood test to test for my blood type, antibodies and diseases I have etc at about 9 weeks, then at 12 weeks I had the NT scan and blood test on the same day, and got the blood results about 3 days later..
Maybe the place your doc refers people to does it differently?

You usually have the blood test and then the nuchal translucency scan. However this pregnancy I had the test done at the fetal medicine unit at a major womens and childrens hospital and they do the blood test the same day as the scan. I have never ever heard of the bloods being done 2 weeks later, definately wouldn't have thought they would give a very good result. With D angel we had bloods then scan and got the results less than 3 hours later, with this baby we got the results the next day.
I am glad you have changed doctors, at least you might feel more confident with the new one

pregpan, maybe the first result you got given was your risk based on age alone, the second result may have been the integrated result. Of course there is also every possibility your first GP didn't know what the hell he was talking about

i had my blood test done and 11wks +1 and my scan at 12wks +1 (which was yesterday) i was told i would have to wait till next Thursday for my results, that makes it 2 weeks from begining of tests to end......

    Rory Rory,
    It can get confusing :hugs:

    Your GP is off base.
Your bloods should be done as closely as possible to your nt u/s. As Clare said many fetal med units will do them the same day or just a day or two before.

I would highly recommend if you are having the nt screening done that you go to a Fetal Medicine Unit. An obs who deals with fetal medicine will do the u/s and give you the results then and there. No waiting. No guessing. You can ask the doctor all the questions you want.

If you choose to go to a an u/s centre than phone that centre and ask them there protocol. What your GP has said sounds very unusual.

    Thinking of you

Thanks girls - I thought it was a bit wierd!

I am about to do a big vent about my GP in my pg journal and might update my earlier vent about her with the same sort of stuff. Flowerchild, ringing the u/s centre is a good idea - if all else fails I'll just go to my local bulk billing place and tell one of the old [email protected] doctors there I want a referral for the bloods. Hell, I am paying $120 for this u/s - I want something other than a photo of Little One's head to show for it LOL!!

Rory, don't know where you are in melbourne but I go to Monash ultrasound for my scans and there is a great guy there who is an OB who specialises in scanning. He works at the Epworth and Box Hill that i know of. let me know if you want his name.

Your GP sound a piece of work Pregpan! My friend's Downs risk was 1:38 and her DS came out normal healthy and beautiful.

I avoided the worry by declining the blood tests so that the nuchal measurements were irrelevant.

As i'm going through this for the first time i'm not really sure what's normal, but i have been booked in for BT for Downs Syndrome a week before my scheduled U/S. Ob then said to make another appt with him a couple of days later to find out results. He seems really genuine and knows what hes talking about so I am just going to put my trust in him!!

    hi all,
well this is the first time i have ever heard of the NT scan, but because of my age (40) my gp advised me on having this scan and bloods done.
my gp said to have them both on the same day, i guess because we have to travel to have them done as this should make it easier on us, not sure.
i am due to have these tests done on the 27/6, and i am very anxious about these, hoping all goes well cause i have wanted to have a baby for ages and lost my 2 last bubs to m/c approximately 2 years ago.
    good luck everyone

    Hi Aurora,

Change GP's!! Sounds a bit off...

I had my usual BT to check for diseases and blood type etc early on around 7 weeks, then NT ultrasound at 12 weeks, and they gave me my results right then and there, plus a dvd of the whole scan as well as a 3D/4D picture, a cd with photos and colour print-outs of all the photos! I didn't have the blood test (even though i had a referral to get it done) because the results said the odds of bubba having downs was very low so i didn't bother getting bloods done for it...

It cost us $240 at RNS Private Hospital (i don't have private health insurance but we got some of back from Medicare)
