Ok this may be a silly question, but i am coming down with a cold and was wondering if it was safe to have Butter Menthol Cough Lollies?? I was reading the ingredients and they sound nasty so just thought i would check.
Nikki - someone I know tried to buy cough lollies at the chemist whilst preggo, and the pharmacist wouldnt sell them to her saying she shouldnt be having them during pg. Make yourself some hot tea with lemon instead!
Nikki - I came down with the WORST cold in the last week or two. I lost my voice for 6 days! Coughing, running nose, sinuses....
Cough lollies are fine - so are strepsils.
Highly recommend Lemsip satchels. Their main ingredient is paracetamol - with lemon flavour. you drink it with warm water and it helps soothe the throat.
I also got a nasal spray from the chemist because my head felt like it would explode from the sinuses.
It's quite safe to take paracetamol whilst pregnant - and I read somewhere that if you have a cold take it every 2-3 hours.
You CAN'T take psuedoeffidren (sp) - which is in Sinus tablets - as that is a form of 'speed'.
And you might have to be careful with some cough mixtures. Can't take nurofen or tablets with ibofuren in it.
You can ask your chemist - as I did - and they can help you choose what's best.
He said I should not take much panadeine - although in small amounts it would be okay.
And it was also okay to put some of the vicks vapour stuff on your chest (or under the nose) - particularly if it's the baby one.
Butter menthols are like lollies - that's why they are sold in the lolly section at the supermarket. They probably wouldn't help if you had a cold.
Hope it clears up quickly for you. It really knocked me about.
Thanks for the replies girls, i know they dont really work, but i am a bit of a sweet tooth and it just helps to have something easing a scratchy throat hehe and it semi-relieves my m/s for a while. if i get any worse i will take myself off the the chemist (again ... i basically live there!) and get something they reccommend.
I have been told by several chemists now that Cepitcol (hope thats how u spell it) is ok for pregnancy. It also has a numbing effect for sore throat which is what I love cos I think sore throat is the worst thing in the world (Im a long time tonsillitis sufferer. Can u tell )
I had a few cough lollies when I had a cold awhile back, I figured it would say on the packet not to use in pregnancy if that were the case. I only had a few though to be sure, and had of lemon honey tea like Lisa said. Maybe a barley sugar here or there would be a good alternative too. Hope you feel better soon.
I just got over a horrendous cold and I was having Vicks Vapour Drops, the butter menthol ones. I didn't have many, but the chemist said they were fine. There's not much in them other than glucose, and menthol.
I have done some internet research on this & talked about it with my GP. Both said that because there is very little research about the safety of menthol during pregnancy, you should avoid throat lozenges with menthol in them (which rules most out - butter menthols, soothers, vicks vapodrops, anticol).
I have been sucking on eucalyptus & honey drops (because the amount of eucalyptus in them is so low anyway!!). But I'm not sure if they are really much better??
What?? Dammit, I can't use my nose spray so I sent DH to get some kind of throat lolly that might clear out my nose and he got antiol. Thought they'd be fine but I'd check JIC and I can't have them???? Really???? Anyone else know anything about it??
Crap!!!! I have had about 4 anticol over the last few days and some honey and lemon soothers! I have been taking paracetamol but need to go and get a nasal spray as still cant breathe!
Why is there so much conflicting advice?? Some doctors/pharmacists say it is fine and others say its not!
