I went to see my doctor today and asked her when I would get a referral for my first scan and she said it is not necessary before 18 wks? She said usually women only get one scan after 18 wks. Between 18 and 32 wks I think she said.
This being my 1st pregnancy I want to make sure I do everything necessary and more for my baby. Doctor added that from wk 10 onwards I can get one done on my own but It will not be covered and I will have to pay (which I'm ok with).
Just wondering when everyone else had there 1st scan?
Unless you have complications like bleeding/unsure of dates or fall into the 'at risk' category or certain genetic disorders (which is only necessary if you plan to act on any bad info IYKWIM?), there is no real reason to scan before the morphology scan. In fact there is some research that says an increased number of scans isn't really great for baby.
However many women like to have early scans done so that they can see their baby. Generally they won't scan before 6 weeks as you can't see much, and then there can be one at 12 weeks for the measurement of the nuchal fold.
We had IVF so I had 5 scans in total. One at 6 weeks to check the position of the baby in my uterus, one at 8 weeks (just because i wanted one), one at 12 weeks to check for downs and another at 19 weeks which was the morph scan
With #1 I had my first scan at about 19/20wks. I was between places and doctors not to mention in denial about it all. I had 2 scans all up the whole pregancy.
With #2 I had my first scan at 12wks. It was a dating scan. I had 3 scans in the pregancy.
I had a dating scan at 6ish weeks (I wasn't 100% sure of my cycle length considering I was recently off the pill AND I'd had a miscarriage a couple of months before at 6 weeks so was desperate to know that everything was 'ok' this time), then my ob let me have a quick 'look' at an appointment at 9ish weeks. I then had the scan at 12 weeks to check for downs and my 20 week scan.
I didn't have a dating scan, but decided to do a NT scan (the one that checks for downs risk). That one is done at 12 weeks, and if i'm completely honest I did it to see bubs and make sure she was ok. My next one was the morphology scan, last week at 19w5d. For me, just seeing her there is really reassuring!
I had one at 6w5d to make sure bubs was okay in there. Saw the heartbeat and all was well. Had the NT scan at 13w2d I think. Next one is next week at 20w2d for the morph scan
I wasnt very happy with my local GP at the medical centre (bad pap smear experience) and so didnt rely on him for any referrals.
In SA they have a Pregnancy info line for women wanting to give birth in public hospital in Adelaide, I rang that number and they gaves me an ID number, which pretty much allowed me to refer myself to the hospital I chose...
Anyway, I had a 'booking' appointment with the midwife at about 8 weeks and she booked me in for a Nuchal scan at 12 weeks and a Morphology scan at 20 weeks.
When I went for my 12 week Nuchal scan, I was out on my dates and only 10wk 6 days, so it turned into a dating scan instead for me.
Then I went back 12 week 6 day for the Nuchal Scan.
And then had my 20 week morphology scan at 19 week 6 days.
I havent paid a cent out of my own pocket yet, all done through medicare.
Also, my hospital are doing a few research studies, I signed up for the asthma study, which gives me 3 more freebie scans, at 18 weeks, 32 weeks and 36 weeks.
The 18 week scan was awesome, the technician was an excellent sonographer and we found out the sex then too (we wanted to).
Looking forward to my 32 week and 36 week scans also.
I am thinking of having a 4D one (that I will have to pay for) as all my family are interstate and i'd like to get some pics and a DVD for them, I will prob do this around 28 weeks.
PS: I only had a Nuchal Scan cos I wanted to see bubs, I am not in risk category and since I'm young DH and I had already decided we'd keep bubs anyway, so just used it as an excuse to see bubs for free!
