Okay so I just had my 20wk scan and found out I am having a girl Everything looks great but the technician drops on me that the baby's bladder is slightly enlarged for normal values.. It is 4.5mm and apparently 4mm or over is considered large and would need another scan at 30something mark to re-check
I have tried to do research on this (thinking I will find out this is really common) but the only thing I am finding is a condition called Lower Urinary Tract Obstruction which is very serious and potentially fatal as the bladder cannot empty and starts compromising other organs and draining the amnio fluid..
So now I am officially FREAKING OUT! I will not see my Obstetrician till Monday and I concede that the info I am seeing is probably worse case scenarios but I am finding it hard to find 'anything' on it being normal or common - just lots of stories of people who had babies with this that didn't resolve and losing their child
I call to the mummies to please, please advise if you have any experience of this or expert advice!
The worst thing you can ever do is google something. Try not to stress until you have your appointment and can discuss this with the dr. I know it's hard to keep calm. I'm sending lots of positive, relaxing vibes. I hope everything turns out fine for you and baby.
I personally think they wouldn't just let you go to wait 10 weeks to re-check on something potentially fatal. My friend's nephew died of that condition you mentioned and they were draining the baby's bladder all throughout the pregnancy. He also had other complications so not just that. Of course, ask your doctor about it if you're really worried. Ultrasounds are not completely accurate ways of measuring size anyway. I hope this makes you feel better.
Ok so please don't quote me but i thought that i would google it as well OK OK SHOOT ME NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!
BUT............
When i was reading everything about being fatal the babies had other things wrong in the scan like enlarged kidneys!!!
In another thread a lady had a similar post to you and her sonographer said to her that the baby could just be holding off from doing a wee or just about ready to do a wee!!!
So please stop stressing take it as it comes, and i too am just as bad and google EVERYTHING!!!
Just as Lovemykids said, there is the possibility that bub was just ready to do a wee When I had my 20 week scan with my first he had an enlarged bladder, but I was told to go away for half an hour & when they rescanned his bladder was normal size, so he it was just full & he was ready to wee. I imagine I would have been a basket case after 10 weeks, just that half an hour was enough to have me stressing out.
This is the exact problem my angel baby Noah had. But, Noah's was truly the worst case scenario. I agree with the others... Don't google!
We spoke to numerous Dr's abut Noah's condition from different hospitals all around the country. IF the issue was solely with his bladder he would have survived. Noah had a blocked urethra (LUTO) as well as damaged kidneys, and small lungs which was a result of the large bladder taking up so much room in his little body and not allowing enough room for his lungs to grow properly. He couldn't survive because of the damage to his kidneys as well as the small lungs. Mind you, Noah's bladder was noticeable even to me on the ultrasound.
I am sure your baby is going to be fine. Sending you loads & loads of hugs. Please know I am here if you ever need to ask any questions.
I would say bub was ready for a wee.
As a midwife when someone has had something concerning (more then a talipe or low lying placenta etc) on ultrasound its usually followed up very quickly the same day usually. The sonographer would have gone and got the radiographer/radiologist person who is the most qualified in reading and doing scans before they sent you home or referred you to another facility with better technology. If it was serious in the fact it could be fatal or have serious consequences you would know about it already and they wouldn't have suggested you return for a repeat scan in 10weeks.
For your piece of mind and some reassurance can you call your Obstetrician for some phone advise? I am sure he would be happy to analyse the findings for you know instead of you waiting to see him at your next visit.
I agree with Mildez. When the issue of Noah's bladder was discovered (at 19wks), a Dr came in to take over the scan and I was told to go see my GP and arrange for a Level 2 scan to be done. It was from there that the seriousness of the condition Noah had was confirmed. The knew from the initial scan that there was a major issue already
I would definitely say that them asking to see you again in 10w is a good sign that bub probably did need to wee.

Onja - When i had my 19 week scan i was told i would have to go back for a scan at 36 weeks to check for urinary tract obstruction. They made me wait and i googled it and freaked out too. I spoke to a midwife and they said its quite common to have them list that on your report and that baby could of just been about to wee. I have had my 36 week scan just last week and babys bladder is working and he has plenty of fluid around him. I was told they will scan babys kidneys at 6 weeks old just to be sure. I hope my story can help comfort you a little. I like to think if they were concerned that action would be taken sooner.
