    Bad backache!

I've had lower back pain all day, getting worse as it gets towards late afternoon, and I can't think what to do to get rid of it. It's 38 degrees here and I'm so hot already so a heat pack is out of the question! Would it be bad to put a cold pack there? I remember having this last time and it did go away after a couple of days, but then I also didn't have a fat... I mean, heavy 10 month old to carry around!!

Is the pain muscular or spinal?

I'm not sure. My hips have started to twinge now too. I think it's muscular?

Anyway, my evening nausea is here to take my mind off it lol Thanks for the exercises Natalie, I've downloaded them & will have a go when S has gone to bed. I just want it all to go away...

Hi Bec, have you seen a health professional (like a physio) about this at all?

Hi Feathertop, I haven't seen anyone for it. It tends to go away after a while. Last night it appears I had a touch of gastro as I was up all night throwing up so didn't really notice the back pain much!! I think I mentioned it to the doctor last pregnancy but can't remember what she said! I might mention it again (different doctor this time) when I go and see her in a week or so.

This morning it seems better, anyway. Not sure I want to vomit that much again for a while, though - I think I'd rather have the back pain!!

You poor thing, I hate vomiting!!!

A dr doesn't have to refer you to a physio, you can just make an appointment yourself. Most dr's don't actually know what physios really can do. Unfortunately studies have shown that with back pain, seeing a dr is generally about as effective as doing nothing! Sad but true, and primarily because dr's are often so busy that they are interested in making sure it isn't anything serious (like a tumour) and providing some pain relief because thats what people want (relief from pain I mean). They don't have the time to really delve into the nitty gritty of the underlying cause and provide treatment to that cause - that's why we have physio's! (And chiros and osteos etc).

Does your back feel stiff too? Are you limited in what you can do? Does your back get stiffer as the day goes on? How far down your leg/s do you get pain?

I remember the doctor last time being kind of unconcerned because I didn't have the pain when I went to see her (ie 'it went away so it can't be serious' kind of attitude!) I have been meaning to see a physio for a while now because I'm getting a bit stiff in the middle of my back. I've got mild scoliosis and I generally tend not to be that supple, which is why yoga has been so good for me. But a girl in our playgroup is a physio... I might ask if she knows someone she can recommend. We moved recently so I'm not sure who's around here.

Yesterday my back did get worse as the day went on. The pain only hangs around my hips, doesn't go further down my legs. Thanks for all your concern!

A massage really would help, I'm sure. Haven't had one for years... thanks for the idea!
