Red face Best Pregnancy Book Reccomendations!!!

Hi I found out yesterday after quite a bit of a scare that I suffered from my first Braxton Hicks.
I then realised that I don't have a pregnancy book.
Does anyone have any recommendations of what pregnancy book I should buy.
I don't have much money so not one that is too expensive.
Is there such a book that has what I should expect week to week, what I can expect throughout this pregnancy, what I can/can't eat and things like this??????

    Any help would be appreciated

    xx

Dont bother buying a book I say. Just ask on here or read the articles on here. Anything you can possibly think of will be answered on here.

I found BB to be the best tool and resource for my pregnancy, birth, baby and more and still more.

    Thanks Alibaby,
I use BB all the time, but my partner hates computers so I thought if I got a book its something we can both look through together.
My partner is really interested in whats going on week by week and month by month

Up the Duff - by Kaz Kooke (sp?)

A fun good read, still with good information. I know it off by heart now, I have read to that much through all three of my pgs. I think it is about $30 nowdays?? You can pick it up almost anywhere - all bookshops and even Kmart, BigW etc.

    hi bee,
i borrowed a few out from the library. I'd recommend that and the turn over seemed good.
we've got What to Expect - which my DH enjoys because it's pretty straight down the line.. it's now in the loo for regular DH perusal lol. I read kaz cooke and it was alright but i wouldn't buy a copy personally.

I also have Birth Skills by Juju Sundin with Sarah Murdoch - this is for the actual birth and gives you tools for handling the pain etc. I've found it very inspriing and i'm excited about giving birth, not scared any more

the books can be expensive but you don't need the latest edition... so maybe try a few 2nd hand book stores as well.

    good luck !!!

Does your partner have email? If he does there are websites that give you weekly updats on what is happening int he pregnancy and then when the baby is born. Just do a google search on weekly pregnancy emails and see what comes up. I had a few different sites emailing me each week with the what to expect, etc and also helpful things for dads.

can highly recommend sheila kitzingers 'pregnancy and birth' (new edition). fantastic IMO. she also provides some post-birth info and gives week by week stuff too. loved it.

local library can be great to get them from!

Highly second 'grub17's' opinion on Juju's Sundin's book with Sarah Murdoch. Brilliant ideas and ways to handle your labour with confidence. I used this with my first bub it really helped me when I had no idea what I was about to face. Goes through a lot of things that your partner can help you with throughout the labour too... Priceless IMO.
Up the duff was very good too. Bit of a laugh with good facts aswell. What to expect when your expecting can be a bit old fashioned but all the info is there.

I've got Up The Duff and What to Expect When You're Expecting and love them both. Definitley look at buying them at Kmart, Target or Big W as they're much cheaper or look online or go to a secondhand book shop.

Up The Duff is fun but informative. It's great to read about the novel side of pregnancy.

What to Expect is very detailed and has lots of excellent medical info so I use that one when something happens that I'm not sure about, like braxton hicks

i wouldnt waste your time or money on up the duff or what to expect when expecting both are not particularly "useful" books, just fluffy pg books really. it wont really prepare you for labour and birth.

    Birth Skills by Juju Sundin
birthing from within by pam england
    janet blaskas books are great

That may be true (I can't say for sure yet as I haven't been through labour) but they do give a really good insight into what is happening to you and bubs each week, which is what Bee asked for.

I second Kaz Cooke's book - I borrowed it off my SIL once and thought it was a great read. But I think the very best pregnancy book, which my mum bought for me when I was first pregnant, is Sheila Kitzinger's 'New Pregnancy and Childbirth'. It is very very good - highly recommend it!

TBH I never liked 'What to expect...' I borrowed it from the library once and wasn't that impressed. It did have all the relevant information and was very detailed etc, but I felt like I was being talked down to when I read it.

I really loved the book by Lesley Regan called "your pregnancy week by week" because i loved the photos there and seeing real life changing images.

The book is a bit pricy though (i think i paid $60). Maybe try ebay.

Soz, i would have lent it to you but my friend has borrowed it now.

Bee - you should be able to get the SK book at any bookstore, like Angus and Robertson or Dymocks etc and I am pretty sure I have also seen it in Big W and Kmart - so might be worth a look, could be a lot cheaper from there. It does cost around $50 or $60 though. But you could also look on ebay or other places for second hand ones - not as up to date, but still good.
