It's more about the first few days/weeks after birth.
One DD was identical to her dad at the start, but looks nothing like him now. She looks way more like MY dad! Same with the other DD and they have different dads.

DS - we all have no idea who he looks like, we often used to wonder who his mother was lol

I'm pale, DH has olive skin, and DD was born bearing the same (beautiful) olive as her dad. So we got it too "Oh she's identical to her dad". Now, looking at her, and soon after birth, although she has the olive skin, she is a split mix of the both of us that many people can see. Be prepared that if your bub does have olive skin, of your MIL's reaction even if she is identical looking to you!!

DD1 looked so much like DP I felt like I'd given birth to him, it was really quite freaky. Before she came out, I joked that I hoped she had his looks and my brains.

DD2 didn't really look like either of us. People now say she looks like me but I think it's just the hair colour.

I *think he does now...but earlier, not so much. He thankfully missed out on my broad nose, all the girls got it though. Actually I catch myself looking at the perfect nose I wish I got, and it makes him look all the more impish
