I just took it as a sign that someone was complimenting my ability to grow a healthy baby. Most of the people I saw who said 'gee, you're big' meant 'big compared to the last time I saw you', which is fair enough really.

But for those who aren't very polite about, try:

To 'gee, you're big': 'gee, you're rude/annoying/obnoxious, but I don't feel the need to call your attention to it, do I?', or,

'sure there's only one bub in there': 'yep, I'm sure, because I'm clever and can count to one', or 'yep, but I needed somewhere to store the pram too, it won't fit in the car'

'wow, you're going to give birth to a toddler': 'actually, I've decided to keep him in here until he's eighteen and can legally kick him out onto the street. Much easier that way', or 'no, an elephant actually, didn't you read about it in the papers, it's the first ever cross species surrogacy. Pretty cool isn't it, what science can do these days'.

I remember a delivery guy asking how far along i was. I told him 30 weeks (or whatever it was) and he says "Woah, that's gonna be a big one!"
I was too shocked to ask when he trained as an OB.
(he was right, DS was big, but that's besides the point. I just had a really lovely placenta)

Whenever someone has commented on how big I am I usually just say "yep, i'm growing a big healthy one!" I think being "big" when your pregnant is good, it means everything is going well!

I really liked the reply Suse came up with too:
To 'gee, you're big': 'gee, you're rude/annoying/obnoxious, but I don't feel the need to call your attention to it, do I?'

I used to just say "thankyou. I'm feeling a bit heavy, would you mind ... (doing up my shoes, passing the salt, fetching me a drink, giving my back a massage)". They'd never comment again!

I had a guy comment once to me saying how big I was with DS, I replied "thanks, that extra weight suits you too". He was so flabbergasted he couldn't reply!

    Thanks everyone!

I can't wait till someone makes one of these comments, and I can try some of these out!

Think I'm going to go with, 'yeah, I am feeling heavy, how about you make me a cup of tea' he he he

I did the 'what im not pregnant' one a few times early on and that soon shut people up
Or id say ''yeah, thanks, shes gunna be so healthy!!''

Once i actually had a woman comment on what sex she thought it would be becasue my bum was fatter so it ment it was a boy/girl....WHAT THE HELL. how did she even know what size my bum was before i got pregnant!! I was SO amazed i couldnt even open my mouth...i think if id tried to have a comeback id have just ended up slapping her!!! (my bum did get a bit bigger...but still)

Sometimes i wandered if i was the first pregnant woman people had ever seen casue i wasnt 'really' that big and i got all the 'must be two in there' comments......Good luck and try to ignore the stupid people! hugs to you

aww Kel - i'm sorry you prolly got that comment from me, but only cuz i'm jealous cuz my bump isn't that big!!
I get the opposite, 'oh your not very big for x weeks'. Which is just as disheartening!! When i have the courage to reply i usually just say ' Well i do still have x months/weeks to go!!'.
how bout i trade you for a week

Hmm well I have had quite a few comments, BUT they are all from supportive people (mum, work colleagues, friends etc) so I know they aren't being critical - they are genuinely really surprised!!

But the crazy thing is (which I point out to them) is that I am *not* that big! I was measuring 19 weeks at 18 weeks, for example, when my MW measured.

Mum said last night (hadn't seen me for 2 weeks while on hols) WOW you look 9 months! I said 'no, I look 5 months. Becuase I am 5 months '

I pointed out to her how big she was at 9 months with my sister - I said, 'you just forget how big it is in the end!' which she agreed with...

5 Ways to Respond to Stupid Comments

I read this article in Pregnancy & Birth mag yesterday its called 5 Ways to Respond to Stupid Comments, I thought id share it as its relevant to this post I found it really amusing as well

People say the most ridiculous things to pregnant women. Be armed and ready with these clever comebacks.

"oh my your bump is so big/small"

You Say; "thats so funny because someone said the exact opposite to me yesterday. But as my doctor says anyone who thinks bump size is an indication of the size of my baby is clearly misguided. It's just like assuming a man who drives a big car has a big..."

"Well your definitely having a boy/girl"

You Say; "oh no here I was hoping it would be a suprise and now you've gone and ruined it! How did you know? I've been to the ultrasounds and couldnt see a thing - but somehow you can just look at my bump and know straight away. Your powers are amazing"

"Child Birth is the most painful thing that you will ever go through"

You Say; "Yes I figured that it was called labor and not rest and relaxation for good reason. personally I couldnt think of anything more painful then not having this baby, so I'm really looking forward to the birth and bring he/she into our lives."

"You can say Goodbye to your social life"

You Say; "Really? I was thinking id join a mothers group, go to playgroup, catch mums n bubs movies, see my stay - at - home mum mates, book babysitters for nights out, leave my partner to look after the baby while I catch up with friends..."

"A Baby means the end of your sex life"

You Say: "If we can still do it with the baby kicking me from the inside, I think we'll manage it in while he/she sleeps in the room next door. And really if having a baby meant no more sex, the world would consist of single child families. Im one of three kids, so my parents managed to do it at least twice after giving birth to me"

I had such a huge baby and I am less than 5 foot people couldn't help but comment. I looked like a might fall over at anytime. I used to proudly say "I make a good baby" or "What can I say? When I commit to something I give it my all." or for family members or work colleges who say "you are massive" I'd say "Yeah, you should probably be doing more for me now."

Wear your bump with pride, I choose to believe these comments are well meaning. ie you are such a good baby maker, your baby is so big and healthy! and if they didn't mean this I'll never know.

my MIL came to visit us (on my due date with ds) and before she even said hello, she said "geez you did get fat didn't you" I couldn't believe my ears and I just said, well thanks so much, just what I wanted to hear. I think she got the message after she heard the tone in my voice! Needless to say, I haven't been very fond of her since!

Im sick of my ILs saying how small my bump is!! DF is a 6ft big Samoan guy so his family expects us to make big babies.. DS was only 6pd 12 and I dont think this one will be much bigger.. My brothers build is so small he could of been a jockey lol so I think my kids have inherited my genes.
