Question Spa & Beauty treatments during pregnancy. What is safe?

I have been given a voucher to our local Beauty salon that expires very shortly, but was wondering is there were certain things I should avoid during pregnancy?

    The voucher includes: Manicure/pedicure
    Massage
    Eyebrow wax
    Eyelash tint

Can anyone one tell me if these are all safe during pregnancy? I know deep tissue massage is a definate no no, so will check with them on that, but anything else?

    Hi there,

I would say the mani/pedi & wax would be fine.

With the massage - you would need to ensure they know what they are doing in terms of massaging a pg woman. Eg: there are certain points on the foot that can cause m/c.

The tint I am unsure of & hopefully a beautician will pop in & let you know.

They are all totally fine during pregnancy. Massage YUMMMMM I had loads of them! They would need to be doing some pretty firm 'pressure' points to effect your pregnancy hon and it'd be a shame to miss out on how delicious one would be especially seeing your body is probably really sore! When you book in you could just request a therapist who is qualified to do pregnancy massage

    Wax fine
Mani /pedi is fine but avoid pressure point int he foot related to pregnancy
no massage for the reasons a) you have to lie down and not safe for baby on tummy and also pressure points

they should have you lay on your side for a massage unless they have the special preggy lady fat belly massage table. But if it's a beauty place they probably will just do relaxation massage and not lymphatic drains, bowen, pressure points etc etc as those are more remedial and sports massage disciplines... so it should feel nice but probably won't do much if you have a sore back iykwim. You may wnat to check what products they plan to use as well.

Any beauty place I have ever been to has asked about being pregnant before you are allowed in.
Not sure I would go the eyelash tint, but I have had all the other stuff while pregnant. Enjoy.

I've been worried about eyebrow & lash tint. I know we're not meant to use hairdye but will this little bit of skin contact matter?
Cos its getting desperate I'd really like to get mine done!

And in my opinion massage is fine, but it would be good to have someone who knows what they're doing. My physio is a preg specialist and she definitely does deep tissue, and i'd be lost without it!

There is nothing wrong with laying on your tummy whilst pregnant if you are comfortable to do so. I was able to lie on mine until 33 weeks. I was also massaged in this position at 28 weeks.

You need to tell any massage therapist that you are pregnant and how far along you are, but there is little to no risk if you are out of the first trimester. Many will not massage first tri women, but this is a cover their arse kind of thing. Any decent and properly trained therapist knows exactly where to and where not to touch a pregnant woman.

Your concern should be the oils they will use. Again, telling them you are pregnant will ensure they use neutral and safe oils on you.

Im not fond of the eyelash tint to start with, the last one I had it really stung my skin.

Really??? No hair dye? I didnt realise that. What are you supposed to do wait the 9 months?

I have regular waxes and haven't heard anything about them being harmful. I think you have to be careful of what afterwax they use. I read somewhere the tea-tree is not good if you're pregnant. I always ask for no tea-tree oil in the product and it's never a hassle for them.

My massage therapist has just left town and I am missing her terribly. I love my deep tissue massage, especially when pregnant!

The general consensus is that you should avoid hair dyes that sit on your scalp, at least during the first trimester, as they can get absorbed into the bloodstream and potentially hurt bub. I know lots of people who still dye their hair though, and have read research that says that hardly any gets into your bloodstream anyway so there is very little chance that it would do anything. I stick to foils when I am pregnant though as they don't actually sit on your scalp.
