during the first trimester I avoided it. From 25 weeks on I had three half glasses of white wine all up. could only manage quarter to half a glass. I enjoyed it and felt okay doing it.

FAS is thought to be caused by moderate to high (so 2-4 units) per day over a reasonable period usually in the first tri. They 'think' that abastaining but still having binge sessions regularly can also cause it.

    I would enjoy a glass....especially if I got to be 30 again

I drank the odd glass of wine throughout both pregnancies.
I also smoked through half of DD1's (and funnily enough she was a whole pound heavier than DD2 lol)

Anyway, I wouldn't deny myself the odd drink, and I would certainly have one on my 30th birthday - pick something really exxy at the restaurant and enjoy it!

I love a good red, but have never had more than a sip when pregnant because I was always worried about something happening, which really is silly because nothing is going to happen over 1 measly glass of wine.

Its your 30th and I say IF your comfortable with having a glass then do it, you do it as an educated woman making an educated decision.

I haven't read all the responses, but for me it just wasn't worth the risk.
If something had gone wrong and I'd done something I wasn't sure of, I never would have forgiven myself.
No judgement, but that's what I did

I think I had about 1 glass a month with Liebs. Months 1 and 2 I didn't realise I was pg so maybe a bit more. Then there was the glass when I visited my Austrian friend (3m), my cousin's wedding (5m), Grandma's 80th (6m), Christmas (8m)... a small glass of wine with food and a healthy diet is unlikely to cause many problems. There's still a chance, but it's about managing risk.

With both girls i would have 1 glass of wine at special occasions, never anymore than that and very rarely was it actually a FULL glass.
I think it's a personal choice hun, there is nothing wrong with either of my girls but i understand people not wanting to risk it.

i had a few half glasses here and there, if i needed it and didnt feel guilty.

while i was in russia years ago i saw a few children who had clearly been born with issues due to alcohol. but they were probably born to parents who drank a bottle of $2 vodka a day.

I should say that a friend of mine at work said that in her country they would drink beer as the yeast helped produce breast milk

I think there is WAY to much paranoia about abstaining during pregnancy. maybe during the first tri but I had no qualms about having a glass with my second bubs. It's all about moderation. Just don't go too crazy. BTW all my kiddies are tip top and happy and healthy.

Hey Blessedatlast, I haven't read all the responses either but can answer your question about how I feel. I didn't have any alcohol at all nor did I have any while on the TWW. I also went on our honeymoon overseas for a month and did not have any alcohol after I ovulated. I guess it's a personal decision much like smoking, we all do know that those things are bad for our baby and in an ideal world would not put them in our bodies while pregnant. I loved my red wine before having a baby but not enough to risk bub health by drinking. I can see how lots of woman do have a glass and I have no judgement on them. If I saw a drunk woman on the other hand I'd be shaking my head.

I had the odd drink with both my pregnancies, more so with my second. Tended to be at social functions and I would have a glass or 2 of champagne (ok, it may have been 3 at the BB Christmas dinner).

It was when I was pregnant with DD2 that an article came out about drinking in pregnancy. It basically said what has already been said, that alcohol cannot pass through until the placenta is functioning. Also that the blanket ban on drinking in pregnancy was prompting some women to seek terminations as they had been drinking before finding out they were pregnant and thought they had done major damage to their baby. So some experts believed the the no alcohol rule was causing more harm than good.

I drank in all my pregnancies from the 2nd trimester onwards. Only ever 1 unit (usually a small glass of wine) per day, and only max 3 times per week. If I drank one week I would have the next couple of weeks off but in general I bought a small bottle of wine and had a little per night until it was finished.
