    Scan dramas???

Hi all just wondering if anyone else has had conflicting information coem from their morp scan. I had my Nt scan at 13 weeks which cam back saying i have a 1:750 chance of bub having down syndrome.

I went to have my morp scan at 20 weeks and the doc couldn't get a clear profile shot of bubs because of the position it was in but all other measurements come back good. So i went back at 24 weeks the doc could only get 1 clear profile shot before bub moved and could not find the nasal bone on the scan which is a soft sign for downs??

The doc suggested that i just come back at 28 weeks for ANOTHER scan and see what it shows. Has anyone else had this problem and how worried should i be???

Try not to worry too much. If there wasn't much fluid in front of the nose it would be hard to get a good look at bubs. This can happen if it's snuggled right into you at the time of the scan.

Scans are not an exact science and can be wrong. They get the sex wrong sometimes - someone I know was told in 8 scans she was having a boy but out popped a girl. They get the size wrong - tell you it's a big bub and out pops a little one (or vice versa).

All I can suggest is that you get the next scan on the best equipment you can get a referral for. Some places have far superior equipment than others. The place I've had all my scans at is one of those and although it costs more it is well worth the peace of mind when things don't look quite normal.

I agree with all this, especially the part about being choosy where you have the next scan if you can. All scans are not equal A specialist sonographer with the latest equipment is much more able to pick up or rule out a problem than the radiology place down the road. I had most of my scans at a specialist women's ultrasound practice in the city and it was insane the difference in quality and how thorough they were compared to a radiology office.

The fact they only got one shot of the profile would make me think you probably still having nothing to worry about. Hope everything works out well for you and bubs.

Just wanted to wish you well with your next scan.

I know how it feels, I was told at my 18 week scan that my son's kidney's were full of cysts and if he survived the pregnancy his kidneys would most likely fail after birth and would need dialysis or possibly die within his first weeks of life.. I was devestated and was even picturing his funeral in my mind..

Turns out though, they got it wrong!! He was born "mostly" healthy, his kidneys function fine and although he does have some health issues, he is nowhere near as bad as they originally told us.

And also, my sister was told she had some ridiculously high chance of having a baby with Downs Syndrome (after having the scan, blood tests and amniocentisis) only to go on and have a perfectly healthy baby boy.

So I would say that U/S doesn't always give you the correct picture but hopefully the appt you have booked goes better than the last ones.

I didn't have the same as you, but I was told at my 20 week scan that my baby had short long bones in the arms and legs, which is a marker for acondroplasia (dwarfism). There are a number of types of acondroplasia which are quite severe and incompatible with life, BUT my MIL is very short as are a number of other family members on that side of the family (not acondroplasia, she was tested, just short) so I didn't allow myself to get too distressed until a follow up level 2 u/s was done at 22 weeks. The level 2 u/s showed the baby was bang on average, so they chalked it up to having the 1st u/s on a lesser quality machine with a less experienced technician.

Did you have the 2nd u/s somewhere different to the first one? My first was at the hospital in the radiology dept, but my second was in the MFM Unit so was quite a bit more in depth and with a tech who specifically did fetal u/s (as opposed to radiology dept tech who looked at all sorts of stuff each day).

Hi all thanks for the support and well wishes. I had another ultrasound on Monday and everything is perfect!!! Bub is measuring in at all the correct measurements and the nasal bone could be easily spoted.

Thankfully i can put all the stress and worry from the last 4 weeks behind me and enjoy the last 12 weeks of pregnancy.

    Thanks again

That's great news newmum!! As exciting as scans can be, they can also be scary. I had my 20week u/s about a week ago and the u/s lady was not very nice. She couldn't get a clear shot of the heart and made comments like "Well I can tell you that your baby certainly isn't doing me any favours" (not in a jovial tone) and was whacking the crap outta my tum in order to get bub's moving. I have to go back this Wednesday and I'm hoping I don't get her again - the first u/s lady at 12 weeks was such a sweetheart, talking about my 'precious new little soul' as if it were her own grandchild

So I"ve been stressing bout this next scan - all is fine with baby's heartbeat and measurements etc, but it still sucks when you gotta go back for 'clearer' shots - so wish me luck!!
