Unhappy Am i too fat for this stage of pregnancy?

Hi I am now at 28 weeks and have put on 14 kilos. I have been reading that in the last trimester people put an average of 1 kilo a week on- I am panicking a little about this. Prior to being pregnant I was a small size - but I have been ballistic with the eating..this is my first child..i am 36 years old...i was reading stuff where people had put on 8 kilos for their entire pregnancy!!!

I think everyone's different. What does your doctor think? Some people's bumps are 'all baby' while other people retain a lot of fluid, and other people get really really hungry. We're all different.

If you're concerned, perhaps keep up some light exercise, go for a walk (I shopped for 'exercise' ) - so you stay fit for the birth now, and also stay fit so it's not too hard to go for walks once the baby is born (walks are great for sanity).
Also, when you're hungry, just keep an eye on what you're eating. You can satisfy your hunger with good nutritious food, or you can satisfy it with junk, which won't do your health any good. I'm not saying to avoid junk completely, but everything in moderation. If you're hungry, grab a glass of water, then some healthy food, and then maybe go for something baaaaad. If you're not starving by the time you get to any junk food, then you might not eat as much.

That's all I can think of for now, but double check with what your doc or midwife thinks, and don't let other people's comments bother you because everyone's different!

    8 kg.... i wish!!!
I think that i had put on about 20kg maybe a bit more for my pg.
My OB told me to not worry about the scales and refused to weigh me (let me do it myself - but it came with a lecture each time)

I think by the time i hit my third trimester the weight continued to go on, but it slowed a bit, maybe as i felt full a lot more i dont think a kg a week, i think that is more in the last 4 weeks not the whole trimester.

As long as you are healthy, you are eating the right stuff (be it a little too much at times ) i wouldnt worry.
    How is your BP?
Are you drinking enough fluid, sometimes thirst can be mistaken for hunger, i was drinking tonns of water when i was pg.

    to BB BTW
If you havent already, maybe check out the belly buddies section and find the group that you fall into so that you can chat with the girls that are due the same time as you, this helped me heaps and i found that most of them were going through the same thing or had similar questions to me

nope you've probably put on the right amount for you.
weight gain in pg is often irrelevant which is why most OBs dont bother weighing.
If you feel up to gentle exercise, like someone else has said that may be of help.

I put on 35kg with my first bub. Im 25 weks now and dont htink I am going to put on anywhere close to that much this time its just been an entirely different pg.

OMG i didn't even need to READ your weight to tell you NO, you're just FINE!

I was one of those who only put on 6kg the whole pregnancy and guess what, i was already 18kg overweight BEFORE i fell pregnant!

Weight and pregnancy is irrelevant. So long as you're eating well and the baby is happy and growing it makes no difference if you gain 20kg or 2kg. Your HEALTH is the most important thing.

Don't panic! Everyone's pregnancy varies. You can't exactly go according to the book though there are suggested averages. I am also a petite person prior to pregnancy. This is my second pregnancy, and I have gained more than the average weight each time. This time, I have already gained 15kg... Trust me, I feel like a whale and have pondered also if I have gained too much weight. When I asked my doctor, she told me not to worry... one thing I thought I ought to mention to you is that I have also noticed some water retention at my lower legs. Water retention could cause an increase in weight.

Try to enjoy yourself while you still have some time for yourself. Hope you have a healthy and happy pregnancy.

14kg doesn't sound excessive to me.

Mind you, it is important to be careful about what you eat, without obsessing about whether your body will change too much or not. Obesity is a risk factor for many conditions in pregnancy and labour, and so while you should eat to your hunger, as someone said upthread, make sure you're doing it with nutritious foods and not indulging the naughtier cravings *too* much

With my first pregnancy I lost tons of weight in the first half of the pregnancy due to severe nausea, and was 48kg by sixteen weeks. Then, at about twenty weeks, when i started to feel better, I made up for lost time and just about ate our whole apartment. I was nearly 90kg by the end of the pregnancy.

I'm doing much better this pregnancy with a low GI diet to keep my blood sugar under control, and while I put on 10kg by 27 weeks, the gain has slowed down a bit now. I'm looking forward to feeling fitter when this baby is born than before, hopefully! I do carry a lot of fluid, though, regardless of what I'm eating, and that's always going to show up on the scales, especially in the heat!

I'm with everyone else so far - every woman, and every pregnancy, is different. It all depends on so many different things that it's impossible to say what is 'good' and what is 'bad' - each case has to be judged on its own merit.
I personally have done both 'extremes' - I started out underweight (for my height, I'm really tall) when I fell pregnant with DD1, and by the time I gave birth I'd put on 30kgs (although I had really excessive amniotic fluid which was worth around twice as much as 'average', and got fluid retention towards the end which added to the numbers on the scales)!!
I lost 15kgs after having her and am within the healthy weight range for my height, and I'm now 25 weeks pregnant and have only put on 4 kilos (which I keep gaining and losing, gaining and losing, I've just lost it all again because I've been sick for two weeks with the flu and haven't been eating). I keep worrying about it but my doctor assures me the baby's 'eating' all my love handles and although it looks like I'm losing weight (I've lost a dress size and my upper arms are definitely slimmer than usual), the baby is taking all that and using it for itself, so there's nothing unusual about it, or anything to worry about. My gut is *huge*, so obviously something's growing perfectly normally in there!!

Don't panic, my doctor has told me anything from 8kgs to 30kgs is 'normal' depending on factors like your weight to begin with etc. As long as your GP says bub is growing normally and healthily, keep on doing whatever you're doing
