I had spd with dd2 and dd3 - both spontaneous vaginal births at 12 days over and 11 days over.
I had no issues with them and can link their birth stories for you if you like![]()
I would love to hear positive birth stories from those who have had SPD. My SPD is getting worse (onset was 21 weeks), my ob doesn't want me to go to due date for fear of future damage, I would still like a calm / drug free Vag birth. Would like to hear positive stories as I am very nervous!

I had spd with my 2nd and birthed using gas only. I was 40+3 weeks. I was standing when I delivered it was the best labour and easiest delivery out of both pregnancies. The midwives said bubs practically fell out lol
Both my pregnancies I had extremely bad SPD I couldn't walk .. I had normal vaginal deliveries both times .40.1 and 39.5
They were both drug free and the SPD resolved itself within the 2 weeks
I had spd with bub number 2
I had dd at 39 weeks drug free
1 hr labour 10 mins pushing on my knees
Honestly didn't notice the spd because I was so focused in birthing
I had SPD with DD2 and gave birth to her at 38+1 after a 5.5hr drug free labour![]()
I had SPD with my last 2. I still have bad days & DD3 turned 3 today!
But both births were NVD at 40 & 40+5 weeks. Both drug free & DD was posteriorI had no issues through the actual birth, I just had to look after myself & be careful of how I moved before & after. I get pain now after big days at work, or having 2 kids in my bed & not being able to move enough. Only every few months really. But I can take voltaren as I need it now that I'm not breastfeeding, so its not such an issue.
I'm like the others. I suffered spd both pregnancies and it didn't affect my labour. 2 spontaneous nvd. First at 39w4d, second at 40w2d. My spd cleared up quickly on its own afterwards.
Thank you, looks like its achievable. For those of you who went over 40 weeks, what was recovery like how did you manage the pain as you got heavier. I have already put on 18kgs and only 29 weeks. I was on the low / healthy weight pre pregnancy. I fear I will put on more weight adding more pressure to my already very very sore pelvis / pubic region.
I was doing physio and resting as much as possible I would sit on a stool to cook dinner or wash dishes. Was hard with a toddler aswell. But I would lie on a mattress and let him play around me. I was ok in the mornings so would make our lunch and snacks and keep them within reach. When he was napping I was laying on the bed too. I just tried to limit the amount of walking, lifting? Standing etc. I also did mayb 2 physio sessions post birth.
I didn't put on a lot of weight during my pregnancies. Only the minimal 8-11 kgs. Limiting activities though. I couldn't push a trolley, so ex usually did the shopping. I tried to do as little as possible... til nesting kicked in!![]()
I had a 12 hr labour with almost 3 hours of pushing. I had an epidural for much of that time and so was on my back, with midwife and DH pushing my legs to my chest during contractions. They were very careful of my bad side (I had drilled it into Dh beforehand that he needed to keep an eye on it) and were again careful when they were stitching me up.
Thanks everyone! I'm doing my very best to rest and not push my body. Some days are worse than others but hoping I can get to the end without being a incapacitated.
I will do my calm birth refresher, am hoping she will guide me through how to manage everything this time round.
I had bad spd and a sacral joint out of alignment too with dd2, at one stage I was using crutches and almost had to use a wheelchair. I had weekly physio visits from 21 weeks and I got to 37 weeks when I had dd, all I needed was gas and one physio treatment afterwards where they could finally realign everything and I was back to normal. I had no issues with ds and I was pg with him 9 months later.
I have had very bad SPD in all three of my pg's. During my first pg I didn't realise what was wrong and so I didn't do much to protect my pelvis and ultimately I was induced as I was no longer able to walk, let alone get out of bed or toilet! My two subsequent pg's, I had physio weekly from about week 16 and then twice weekly from 30 weeks on. When I was pg with my third child I discovered SRC Pregnancy shorts and I am quite certain they assisted in stabilising my pelvis somewhat. I was also very careful to always keep my knees together and limited any activity. Lots of sitting on the couch watching telly! (As opposed to DD1, when I figured a good long walk was what I needed to ease the pain!)
I had an epidural for each of my deliveries and as much as I was relieved to ease the pain of labour, I was more pleased to numb my bloody pelvis!! I ensured that my support people and MW's were aware of my SPD and we were very careful to make sure that my pelvis was protected in any movement.
Unlike PP's, my SPD did not resolve after delivery - although it improved within a couple of weeks - and on each occasion it has been at least 12 months post delivery before I could comfortably exercise, bend over, climb in or out of the car or push a shopping trolley.
I can't give you a positive story and won't scare you with a negative one but I will give you the advice that my physio gave me - it's not the length of the labour, it's the length of the pushing phase and the position that makes a difference. I had severe SPD before/after a three hour pushing phase with my first child and for my second she advised me to push for no longer than 20 minutes.
Wow, Fionas. What position did she recommend? My ob suggested all fours with the MW holding my hips steady so I don't move my pelvis.
