I'm coming up on 31 weeks, and baby is head-down. Is this about the age that they usually stick to one position, or is it still too early? I can't remember what happened with Elyse. Marieke, they thought, was breech until about 37 weeks, when an ultrasound showed her sitting the right way. (We were getting all wound up for an ECV or a c-section Thank goodness she was actually head-down!)
I'm not going to get too stressed about it one way or the other, since it is still quite early, but because I am really hoping to have this one at home, it would be nice to know that he/she is co-operating!
I understand they can keep moving around until the 34-35 week mark, especially if you have a bit more room (due to longer torso, smaller bub, more amni fluid). Mine was sitting breech at 31 weeks but by 33 weeks had tipped into heads down. Even if they are lying breech after that a good percentage of bubs manage to get themselves head down anyway.
Some of the other ladies who post will have some tips on best posture to encourage good positioning.
hi cricket
i had just typed u a big post but i lost it..... and i am being lazy so this one will be shorter but i hope still useful.
have heard spinning babies website is good for optimal positioning exercises and positions.
so maybe try that out.
from memory i think being on all 4s is good, as is sleeping on left hand side and pelvic rocking.
try to avoid reclining on couch and lying backwards...
my baby is head down on LHS (good baby) but OB did mention to me that they can move around til about 36 weeks (and even after)
Actually this is something I have been thinking about, My bub is actually sideways still, she is wrapped around my tummy and her head is pronounced on my right side.
My Ob says not to worry she just has lot's of room and not to worry till 36 weeks.
(I am 31 weeks)
The physio at the hospital classes was giving advice to women whois bubs were head up, she suggested sitting on a chair backwards and leaning forward over the back, also sitting on a exercise ball and leaning forward onto a bed or table. (basically lean forward)
I didnt ask about a sideway's baby as I felt so stupid as everyone elses were right way round.
I am worried she will get to snug sideways and grow too much and not be able to turn. she moves a lot kicking, punching and my whole stomach contorts when she does. It's almost like she is stuck and trying to free herself. At least this is what my brain is telling me.
She doesnt turn at all, just pushes and shoves , pokes and prods.
babies can twist and turn up to 36-37 weeks, and then will generally go head down in the pelvis as this is the most comfy position for them to be in. 2nd, 3rd etc babies, can sometimes have an unstable lie (keep changing postion) until 38 weeks, or even later!
to help encourage good positioning to encourage your baby in a head down position...all 4's and squatting are great. If squatting is difficult for you, the benefit can still be reached if you straddle a chair (kitchen chair) facing the backrest. This encourages your pelvis into an optimum tilt, and and facilitates the opening of the pelvis. Birth ball are also great for this.
Avoid lying on the couch to watch telly at night...the most comfy position I know at the end of a day, but not good for optimal baby position.
I highly recommend pregnancy yoga for optimal baby positioning, pelvic floor tone, and overall posture improvement (which also alleviates lower back pain).
babies toss and turn the most between 28-32 weeks...still lots of room for them to play kick the mummy and do gymnastics.
your bubba will turn around eventually as it will just get too squishy to stay that way...sometimes 2nd, 3rd time mummies with relaxed abdomen muscles will have a baby that stays in the oblique position until a few days before labour starts.
I think my ob said that once a baby's head-down they usually stay that way whereas if a baby is breech/transverse they often change to head-down.
I think my baby's been head down since 32 weeks (am now 39 and a bit) but he is changing from left to right still so his bum/shoulders/feet move around. Obviously going to be a hip-hop dancer doing head spins!
My baby was head down and engaged until 36 weeks, and suddenly decided to turn transverse. They did an ECV which was unsuccessful because he turned straight back. However throughout that week he turned head down by himself and has stayed that way since. I think it depends on how much room and amniotic fluid they have in there.
