How many scans have you had?

I've only every had two ... we didn't feel the need to do the nuchal screen at 12 weeks (it wouldn't have made any difference to us if the baby had Down Syndrome), and then we had the big scan at 19 weeks.

I really want to see the baby again, I know it's just being selfish on my part to want that, but my OB wont give me a referral to another ultrasound. He said that I won't be able to get any money back from Medicare - but I've reached my safety limit and haven't claimed for an ultrasounds so far this year.

I am going to see my GP on Friday, should I ask her for a referral?

I guess I'm just concerned that if I go for another scan that if they pick up something on the scan, my OB will get cranky with me for going behind his back ... but I just wanna see BOBs face again.

How many scans have other people had?

I totally understand how you feel Kylie, but for me I've had about 6 scans. The reason being namely cos I was seeing the OBS fortnightly until I got to 12 weeks (due to my m/c history) and then I had two at 20 weeks (one by OBS, other by U/S place) and then another at 34 weeks due to Gestational Diabetes. It has been really important for me to 'see' bubs as I was a total mess until about 20 wks for fear of having another m/c. I would see if you can get a referral from a GP. Heaps of people I know have had heaps of scans and even the 3D/4D ones (I haven't had those ones). I would be surprised if they 'pick' anything else up, they can usually get a really good idea at 20 wks how bubs is. Good luck, I hope you get to see your bubs again.

    Hey Kylie,
I haven't heard from you in ages. I hope everything has been going smoothly for you. I wish I could see bubs again. I have already had 5 scans, 3 were before 12 weeks though, for dating purposes and then the NT scan. I was contimplating trying to get another referral as well. You should pop into our BB group to say hi, we have already had 1 birth or should I say two, a set of twins!! Amazing hey! Not too long now until the rest of us pop
    Good luck with the scan.

    Hey there,
I know how frstrating it must be to just want to see your little one! I too was told that there was no need for a 12 week scan ... so had to wait it out till 20 weeks. Very frustrating and worrying as I'd already had a mc previously and was really scared.

Unfortunately, this wont be happy news to you, but so far I have had 5 scans, all from 20weeks onwards... some because of a 'problem' that was seen with bubs brain, that has new rectified itself. I have at least another 4 scans to monitor his growth as they cannot give me any idea of a due date anymore.

You may have another scan at 34-36 weeks to see which way your baby is lying... I have heard that one is quite common. Otherwise, depending on where you live, there may be a 4d ultrasound clinic near you that does not require a referal. There's one in Melbourne, but its $250. We were going to do it, but with all the scans I am having, don't see the need.

Although It's very disappointing that you may not see your bubs again, just think, in approx 6 weeks time, you'll see the real deal!!!

I hope you have a H&H pregnancy!! Good luck with any more scans if you can have one

    Hi Squishee,

Well I ended up seeing the GP today and she is sending me for another scan. I've been feeling really down and flat lately, and she is concerned that my depression might be raising it's ugly head again, so she thinks that seeing the baby again would be a good thing for me.

    Thanks for your replies everyone!

Ive had lots too, every visit to ob so monthly-fortnightly. I get cross that pyschological health seems to be overlooked sometimes with pregnancy, its not just a physical process and we arent always psycologically sound going into the proces. So glad your GP understood and saw the psychological side. I had a m/c at 6 weeks but I still have psychological side-effects I need to address with this bub who is now 33 weeks. So glad you got the referral and let us know how you go.:hugs:

    Hi Turk,
I am having growth scans for 2 reasons.
Due to my high BMI, adn also as we dont have an accurate ( or anywhere near approximate) due date.... or due week. lol

But I did have to ask ne of the doctors why I was having these growth scans. So annoying when they tell you that they want you to do seomthing.. yet they won;t give you any reason why!

Good luck with all your scans and the rest of your pregnancy!

I've had 5 scans. I lost all my symptoms twice in the first 9 weeks! At 10 weeks my HCG level dropped, nothing drastic, but enough for my dr to send me for a emergency ultrasound. At 14 weeks, I had bad pain in my lower abdomen, spent 4 hours in the emergency room to be told its stretching muscles and its normal. They sent me for a scan tho anyway. Had the routine 18-20wks scan at 20 weeks, but bub didn't move - was all curled up! Again, 1.5hrs later to double check something. Bub had moved by this time, but we still couldn't see it's heart or fingers properly. My latest scan was at 26wks to see the fingers and heart. All is fine, although the sonographer said it might be a small baby, around 7 pounds. I thought that was like the general starting weight for a term baby. Anyway, bubs healthy and has started its final weeks.

    I can't wait!

    Hi Princess Kylie,
I'm really glad your GP was understanding and gave you a referral.I have had 4 scans and I'm off for a 5th next week. I had the NT scan at 12 weeks (hardly got to see a thing, the sonographer was horrible) and the morphology scan at 18 weeks. At the 18 week scan they found that my bubs has gastroschisis so I go every 4 weeks at this stage to be scanned but I'm guessing I may end up having them every couple of weeks towards the end...phew, sure is tiring sometimes but worth it.

I've only had two scans. I had one at twelve weeks, but it was only a little one with my OB. I had the next one at 21 weeks. Part of me would like to see my baby again, but I'm going to see him/her in a few weeks anyway so I won't bother. Unless I feel that there's something wrong, I think the better part of me would just like the surprise and the anticipation of seeing him/her at birth.

it's great to hear that there are more people out there that choose to skip the nuchal translucency scan but still decide on the 20 week scan. I had a dating scan at 6 weeks mainly because my GP didn't believe me when I told her I knew when I Ovulated. She insisted that ovulation doesn't change the due date (needless to say, I have changed doctors since). She kept saying I was 9 weeks instead of 6, but the u/s prooved that I was right. The only other scan I had was the 20 week scan. I also do want to see my bub again, but I want to see it in reality, not on the u/s. I wanna hold and cuddle him/her.
To me, seeing bub on the u/s is a bit surreal and doesn't really awaken motherly feelings iykwim. It gets a lot more real when I can feel & see bub move. So I don't really have that u/s craving, but I can understand it nevertheless.

I've had two medical scans, one at about 15 weeks and one at about 20 weeks. Since they were both fine and as SuperBub is in the correct position, etc, I was told that I wouldn't need any more. I did want to see SuperBub again though, so booked in for a 4D scan (in a clinic that didn't require a referral). It did cost over $200, but was fully worth it, especially as since SuperBub had her hand over her face, they gave me another appointment for free.

I had a scan at 13wks and one at 19 weeks. My OB does a quick scan at each visit, so I get to see bubs! I was suprised that she has done it at every visit, as my last ob didnt.
