How much weight have you put on?

Was just reading through one of my preggy books and noticed a weight gain chart that said an "average" woman puts on 12-15kg's during her whole PG and at the risk of sounding vain i'm really curious as to how i'm doing compared to everyone else.

Pre-preg i weighed between 45-47kg (i'm 5'9) and now i'm upto 70-72kg so that's about 25-30kg for me so far, I don't feel fat at all just very pregnant *lol* Is it even possible to only put on upto 15kg's? - I think that puts a very un-real expectation on pregnant women (especially since it's a first time mum's book).

have to say i've eaten whatever i feel like the whole time i've been PG and never felt guilty about any of it, where as before i found out i was having a baby i pretty much starved myself for days because i done alot of promo modelling and was very strict on what went in my mouth... I'll never go back to doing that... I'm addicted to choc-chip cookies, i feel really healthy now and i want to set a good example for my little girl!

Hey LiddlePixie - from what I have read about it, there seem to be several schools of thought. The first being a set weight range, ie the 10 - 15 kgs. The second (and I think a bit more accurate) depends on what you weighed beforehand, your BMI. It sounds like you had a low BMI to begin with, so you would be expected to gain more than the average. My BMI was higher than yours, so I am "supposed" to put on less than the average. The third school of thought, and the one I like best, is that it doesn't matter, as long as you are eating healthy, bubs is growing, and you are feeling good. There is so much pressure on women these days to be skinny, that it is hard not to stress out when the scales start reporting numbers you have never seen! However, it is best to just focus on your growing bub, not the scales.

BTW - I have put on 15 kgs so far, and I am shorter and weighed more than you to begin with!

Hayley, I put on 10kg's by the time my bub was born, but I was also alot bigger than you were before pregnancy. Being that you were only 47kgs before bub, then I would think you would put on more weight. If you feel good and bubs is growing normally, I wouldn't worry about what any books Dr's or other people say. It's your body and you know it better than anyone!

I am 27 weeks today and I have put on around 12kg so far and have 13 weeks left so I am guessing I will go over the 15kg point but I am not stressing about it. I just want a healthy bubby.

Hayley, as you were quite thin pre pregnancy then fully expect to put on those extra kgs. You will put on weight for yourself first and then the baby.

I did the same, esp with my first bub. I weighed 50kgs and am 5'7, so I was thin too. I gained 22 kgs with him. I lost that by the time he was 2 weeks old !! Second bub I gained another 22 kgs. This time it took me a few more months to loose it. Come bub no 3. I weighed more pre preg so I gained alot less. That time I only gained 14kgs. Again I lost it within 2 weeks after my c section. Bub 4, the magical 22kgs again. Not sure what it is with that number ( i know I am right though, checked my hosp cards) I did weigh less pre preg 4 than I did pre no 3. So again I think that's why I gained the extra. Took me a while to loose it that time. And of course once it was gone I fell preg again.
I am 26 weeks now and have put on 13 kgs already. I just know I will hit that 22kg mark again.

I don't stress about it though. I will loose it afterwards. Thankfully I have been lucky in loosing my baby weight. Still I would love to be one of those preg mums that only grows a bump and nothing else goes enormous too.

Good on you for wanting to set a good example for you bubba too. You owe it to the both of you to eat well and stay healthy

I am 36 weeks tomorrow and I've gained 12-13kg already. I'd expect to gain about 15kg all up. I gained about 13-15kg with DD. I lost it pretty easily so I'm not too stressed.

But I weighed a lot more pre preg than you so I don't have the capacity to gain as much as you have. The thinner you are, generally the more weight you will gain. For your height it sounds like you were very thin pre preg.

I don't follow the 'rule' that you put on most of your weight in the third tri either. Both times I've put the majority of my weight on in the second tri and hardly any in the 3rd (which did stress me out in the second tri wondering how big I'd end up if it continued!! Thankfully both times it slowed right down by about 30 weeks).

I've put on 17kg (From 60 up to 77) and I'm 167cm (whatever that is in feet!!).

I was hoping to gain less, but certainly didn't go out of my way eating wise - I have had a very healthy appetite.

Don't worry Gracie, 23kg's and counting and i'm a couple of weeks behind you! i spoke to my ob about it and he said "Why are you weighing yourself?" He told me as long as i was healthy eating well and bub was growing, that i shouldn't even let it cross my mind. So i try not to, but i do hope they "fall off" as everyone assures me they will!
I was very active pre-preg, loads of surfing, hiking, running as well as a physical job, so to go back to just yoga and walking i guess i should expect to pack on a bit!
Everyone is so different. I looked about 30 weeks preg at 20 weeks, everyone commented, but now i am not as big as some other girls the same distance along.
So as long as you eat a healthy balanced diet, i don't think it matters liddlepixie, enjoy your new curves!

I put most of mine on in the first and second tri too... Hardly any at all in the 3rd - Could swear i put 5kg on each BB in the first tri, which looked ridiculous *lol*.

*hehe* Would be lying if i said my diet was always healthy and balanced but it is satisfying!

    Hi Hayley,

I'm 30 weeks along and i've only put on 4kgs my entire pregnancy and i've been eating whatever i want! I was 55kgs before becoming pregnant, and i'm 170cm tall.... i think everyone is different though with regards to how much weight they *should* expect to put on during pregnancy

Im 39 weeks and Ive put on 14kgs. Last pregnancy I put on about 12kgs and it all come off in the 2 weeks after I had my daughter cos most of it was fluid. This time its fluid as well but I weigh more this time to start with. I also weigh a lot more than u do too so maybe it depends on how much u weigh in the first place. A friend of mine put on just under 40kgs with her pregnancy and 20kgs came off in the first 2 weeks from fluid and then the rest came off over the next couple of months. Spose its different for everyone.

I put on 4kgs. My pre-pregnancy weight was around 48-51kg. I only really gained the weight of my daughter and placenta and fluids, she was 2.9kg at birth.. so when she was born I was back at my normal weight, which was good (as I didnt have to stress about losing it) and bad (because I continued to lose more weight breastfeeding). I had horrible morning sickness up until 13 weeks where I could barely eat anything so I didnt put on any weight at all till about 25weeks. After m/s stopped I just ate whatever I wanted but I kept active too.

Everyones different.. I was told to expect to put on around 17-20kgs.

I put on 8 kgs. I had lost 6 of it by the time I left hopsital and by the end of the second week once all my fluid had gone I was back to my original weight.
