    Possible IUGR..

I went for my 28w appt with the OB today. Had a growth scan done yesterday and baby is measuring in the 3rd percentile and my fundal height today was 22cm.

The plan at my last appt was to do 4 weekly scans starting at 28w just to check growth as DS was induced at 38w5 because he was "small for dates".

Now they've referred me onto the Mater for another scan next week and fortnightly scans. If they're not happy with her growth between scans, they'll want her out

Has anyone had any experience with IUGR? I know if it is in fact IUGR, she's safer outside than in but I'm just disappointed. I wanted to avoid induction this time around Not to mention work is going to hate me, 4 appts a month all during work hours..

DD had severe IUGR (4w behind in growth with serious placental insuffiency)
But, DD's IUGR was linked to her birth defect, our babies just don't grow like they should.

DD was delivered at 34w due to the severe IUGR. She was born on the 3rd centile and has remained on the bottom of the chart (for her corrected age). Also linked to her birth defect.

Fingers crossed that bub stays put for a lot longer!

DD2 was affected by IUGR but I to a lesser degree than what you are talking about. I had 4 weekly scans from 20 weeks (her small size was picked up at 20 weeks) and she was measuring below the 3rd percentile. Because DH and I are pretty small, for us below 3rd percentile wasn't as much of a worry as it sounds, we would expect some where around 15-25 percentile averaging our heights so it wasn't that far out of that range.

She was induced on her due date and was below the 3rd percentile, I would say around the size of a 34-35 week old, and born 1/2 kilogram lighter than her older sister. She is still below the 3rd percentile for everything except her weight which has just got to the line. Due to the IUGR she was born very very hungry. I think many IUGR babies are tube fed to start with so not getting enough it kind of dealt with, but as DD2 was borderline IUGR I was able to feed her myself, but it did cause us a few BFing issues i.e. she had no 'reserves' of energy to get her through until my milk came in so she was screaming with hunger at the stage when they are supposed to be going OK with just drops of colostrum. But it was nothing we couldn't work around.

One of the Mum's I met when DS was in hospital had a baby with IUGR. Not sure of the sizes, but she found out at her 28wk scan then by 32wks the baby had stopped moving so they took her out. The baby was small (obviously) and struggled to put on weight, due to severe reflux. She came home after 8 weeks and is now doing really well.. She's still below the 3rd centile in her weight.

I hope your Bub keeps growing and you get to full term, but you'll be in good hands at the Mater if bub does come early.. I hope your work are understanding..

My DS1 was IUGR and weighed 1.9 kilos when born at 34 weeks. This was in addition to my suffering from pre-eclampsia.

He's still small, but was healthy, and came home at 10 days old weighing 2.02 kilos.

That must weigh heavily on your mind . I don't know anything about IUGR sorry, but I have to sympathise with anyone who might be facing an induction / SCN journey .

    :hugs: schonell

My first 2 had third trimester IUGR that wasn't picked up until birth because my fundal height was still on par for dates. But I had Pre-eclampsia with the first and high BP issues with the second. DS1 induced at 37+4weeks weighing 2.8 kg and the MW immediately noticed his size and development was more like that of a 35 weeker than a 37+. We did have a few issues with feeding but I had super supportive MWs so we left hospital fully breastfeeding. DD was induced at 38+2 due to my waters breaking, weighing 2.9kg. She didn't have any developmental problems though, she was just small.

I also had a friend who had her DD on due date and she was 1.6kg. UIGR was never picked up, but suspected. Her DD is now 2 years old and most people would not know.

I hope your little one keeps on growing, at least enough to stay put for a while.
With your DS did he have any other issues besides being small? I just ask as if there aren't other issues, it might just be that you bake little babies.

(have they explain the reason/s behind IUGR?)

I wish you all the best!

Thank you all for your replies

BAL they said at my appt yesterday that it's very important now that I pay more attention to movement. She's been moving pretty well this past week which is nice seeing as she has had me concerned a few times previously.

Chrispe DS didn't have any problems at all, was just a little bub. They're more concerned that it is IUGR this time because her head is measuring as it should, it's her body that's measuring smaller and they mentioned that when baby isn't getting all they need, vital organs (brain and heart) are fed and the rest get the left over amounts ITMS?

I've just gotta wait for this next scan next week and go from there.

I was induced the day after my due date due to possible IUGR with DS1.

SCN were on standby and the crash cart were in the room when I delivered, but he came out perfect, just a little small, weighing 2.8kg.

We went home the next day, bf was established perfectly and he is now a very healthy and happy 4.5 year old boy.

I really hope your little miss is able to stay put for a bit longer, please keep us updated

Yes, a friend of mine has just had the same thing, her little boy's abdomen measurement was not growing at the same rate as the other measurements and she said the same thing, the brain and heart get priority and the tummy doesn't get as much and stay smaller. She had her bubs at 36 weeks and he,s been breastfeeding like a champ ever since.
Good luck with the next scan.

That just triggered my memory Sagres, it was DS1's abdomenal measurement thar was out of proportion to the rest of the measurements.

Apparently IUGR is linked to high PAPP-A results early in pregnancy. So they should keep an eye on that too.
