Sleep and safe pills to take?

    IS there such a thing??

I know when i was pregnant with Chelsea the hospital said i could take Restavit....but only 1/2 to 1 tablet to keep it safe....but they never helped.

Im going thru a rough time with Chels and im at wits end....in not sleeping cos of her and the fact im in so much pain and my GP doesnt give a *****...cos "its all normal".

I dont want people to say: try warm milk, warm showers, herbal teas.....

    None of them work.....

Unless theres some really good drugs or things that work out there... let me know!

    Hi Kim

I've been there and I know how desperate you can get without sleep.

I am not aware of any over the counter preps that are safe in third trimester (I have researched this). Definitely don't take Polaramine. IMO, you should talk to your Dr/OB about a prescription drug (like a benzodiazapam) - but they will only give you something like that if it is really effecting your emotional well being. I think it is better to take medications under supervision than trawl the chemist for something that may work but not know all the full effects ...

Anyway, that's my opinion...... You've got my email if you want to talk off line.

    Hi Kim,

I was taking Polaramine, which i was told was safe all through pregnancy (and it was an absolute legend in getting me to sleep all night, no waking even to go to the loo!)

And then a different pharmacist told me it's unsafe in the 3rd trimester because the baby gets addicted to it and has withdrawals when they're born!! So maybe go and ask a pharmacist what they recommend because usually they know more in-depth stuff about certain drugs than a GP would know... IMO.

Good luck Kim, it sux getting no sleep

Saffi, why do you say to not take Polaramine? It was recommended when I had a hellacious cold recently.

Kim, do you think you need sleeping pills or just some decent painkillers? You might find that with better pain management the sleep comes more easily? You can use panadol or panadeine in pg, no problems, do not exceed the dose on the box & not a good idea to mix and match. It might be a good idea to seek further medical advice, if your GP is not helping, find one who will!!

Other things that might help could include hot bath before bed, wheat bags, better pillows to prop yourself up with, as well as some relaxation exercises. Hope you get some relief and some sleep soon!

I don't think it would help if you are kept awake by pain, but if it is stress keeping you up then Bach's Rescue Remedy can help. It is a homeopathic remedy for stress. It says it is safe during pregnancy but I would check with a pharmacist. I use it sometimes myself if I am finding it hard to sleep. I have also used it on my cat and dog (when moving countries) with fantastic results so I know it is not the placebo effect.

I can't offer a whole lot of help for you Kim, just a hug. I'm in the same boat. What's hurting? If it's your hips (mine are!) maybe try a body pillow or something between your knees. Any chance someone else can get up with Chelsea? (BTW - what's getting her up? Ear infection? Growth spurt?)
I really hope you can find an answer hun, I know how much it sucks not sleeping! (I have no idea what's keeping me up. My hips ache, but they did before, and I slept. I think it's just getting to hard too turn over and get comfortable etc, combined with some hormonal pregnancy thing.) Who cares if it's normal - we've still got to function as mothers somehow on NO SLEEP! Tell your GP to try it for a week or two! (Take forever to fall asleep, get up a hundred times to pee, comfort a child, try to get comfortable... etc, and then wake up the next morning with the child, and be cheerful, patient, attentive, and kind, despite the continued discomfort and fatigue of pregnancy too. See how well he lasts!)
    Maybe try the naturopath???
    Anyways, I sympathize -

Polaramine is OTC. I think though, that my pharmacist had to put a label on it.

    Hi Kim

Polaramine is an antihistamine - allergy tablet. When I was having trouble sleeping a few months back I took it and put me right out. When I started having trouble again in my third trimester I googled some stuff from medical sites and even the company's own site and they definitely said not to take it in the third trimester.

Haven't tried rescue remedy but I know people who swear by it.

    Hope you are feeling better.
