whoop.... i whinge, then I run away!

Haven't been feeling real social, having a hard time breastfeeding (although it's settling at last - now I'm chained to the couch for 18 hours a day!) but things are looking up. How is everyone coping so far?

Kuraiza - great to see you in here!

Breastfeeding is time consuming, isn't it? How did humans survive evolution when us women have to sit around, defenseless and immobile for so many hours each day? I am chasing my inlaws out of the apartment so I can breastfeed and watch TV, or else I'm stuck in the bedroom all day.

Jude was awake last night from 6pm to 11.30pm. What was that all about? I didn't know what I was supposed to do.

I'll join this forum too. :) I've found it hard to find time to get online!! I am surprised at how long breast feeding takes. I keep forgetting it takes an hour per feed!! Happily I haven't had any problems with breast feeding.. but my worry is if Maya is getting enough!? I don't know how to tell if my breasts are being drained?! I don't have engorged breasts at all.

kuraiza - My little Maya is also going through long periods of awake crying time.. lasting hours. It started a few days ago. And DH and I are going crazy trying to work out what's wrong or what to do to settle her. She seems to not want to sleep - she gets these big wide eyes. But then I think she gets over tired and can't cope so cries until she can settle down for sleep, which can last for hours. I have no idea what to do either.

That's how I felt too. I bought a dummy for Jude because he loves to comfort suckle and he sucks his fists, the paediatrician told me in hospital you can always take a dummy away but you can't take away thumbs, so we tried it. It helped to settle him last night (at last).

Well i am slowly getting used to the world of a newborn and a 16 month old.
It is hard being so tired in the morning. I tried to put DS in his cot at night in his room but crys so much. So for now we are co sleeping and DH is in the spare room - which works well as he gets sleep, and looks after DD if she wakes and i get the bed to myself!

DS is waking all hours no routine at night yet. Sleeping well during the day lol!

As for dummies... i held off the dummy with DD for 5 weeks and it was a godsend when i finally gave in... the sleep was soooo much better as she didnt need my boob to settle!!

Trying to give DS one in the hope it would happen with im too ... lol but nope! he wont take it!!! rah!

I didn't want to use dummies either. I was mostly worried it would affect how he attaches, but since attachment isn't an issue and the comfort suckling is, I gave it a try. I feel bad giving him a dummy because I think "what if he wants something else and I'm not giving him what he actually needs" but he would reject the dummy and keep crying if he wanted something else. I swaddle his hands down and I think it frustrates him that he can't suck his fists, so the dummy calms him and he falls asleep within a few minutes. It's made a big difference to settling him.

Also, I just rubbed some avocado oil baby lotion on him after a bath (his skin was peeling on his hands and feet) and I wonder if that helped settle him because after a quick booby topup he was out like a light.

Why doesn't your husband want you to use a dummy? I'm just interested because I think usually it's the woman who objects and the man who can't see anything wrong with it.

Jude sleeps like a champion, so much so that I have to wake him up to feed him so it's easy for me to get sidetracked and forget to wake him (or want to sleep for 4 hours straight after a 2-hour feed), so some days we only get 5 feeds in a 24-hour period and I am a bit worried if he's eating enough. Wouldn't he wake up and cry if he was hungry? Am I being a bad mum? I'll take him for a weigh in 2 days and see if he's gained weight since hospital. I hope so, he's so skinny.

Is anyone else suddenly getting bombarded by medical bills (pathology, paediatrician etc) 2 weeks after their baby was born? When do they think I have the time to look at these things and why didn't my private health insurance automatically take care of it?

Bleh, I think I've already lost half the bills in the chaos that is my living room. I didn't expect this $600 bill from the paediatrician who has charged me for every time he popped in for 5 minutes to say hello in hospital.

Itsme: My mum gave me some excellent settling techniques. We had a hell of a night the other night when Jude was awake from his 7.30pm feed until midnight! But last night was bliss!

For squirming unsettled baby: Hold your baby to your body really firmly and let them fight you (Jude declares out-right war on me). Let them squirm and whinge and complain, but keep holding them tightly until they calm down then hold on some more until they've been calm for at least a few minutes.

For wide-eyed but quiet baby: Swaddle baby and rock in arms, keep rocking even if they finally shut their eyes.

I've done both, but the first one was particularly effective. I hadn't tried persevering through a severe case of the grumps, but Jude got tired of fighting wars with me quickly and fell asleep easily after that.

kuraiza - My DH actually isn't against giving her a dummy, but wants to wait and see if it really is necessary. At the moment we find most unsettled periods are during the day, which is easier to cope with than at night. But we are both willing and ready to use dummies if we need them! And thanks for the advice on unsettled babies. Somehow my DH discovered the first method the other night and it worked so well for us. I need to try the wide-eyed quiet baby one though, cos a lot of the time she'll be wide awake during the day.. show no signs of tired.. but suddenly become a screaming baby! I think she wants to be awake and then just suddenly is too over-tired!

Hi girls.. I'm thinking I should join this group. My baby buddies group is hard to compare with. All their babies are smiling and doing all the typical things a 8week old babies does, though Byron is really only 1 week, he is 7 weeks behind. All his milestones will be compared to with his corrected date, which would be the same as your babies. Do you's think that it's a better idea for me to hang here?

Well last night was a semi better night. DS fed 3hrly overnight which is a vast improvement!
I encouraged him to cluster feed every hour from 5pm-8pm... so he had a full belly... Before hand he was cluster feeding at 2-5am!! my supply must have been low!

Ethan is looking around more now - wide eyes! i think they are brown... hard to tell but they are def not blue like DD's were!

kurazia - we were public (although i had a home birth lol) so no bills.. but i feel for you. Has your baby bonus come in?

Itsme - We did the same with DD - had to hold realy tight for about 10 mintues until she would settle. - are you swaddling bub?

I noticed a few of you were thinking that there would be only 1 October group, but they will stay as they are in BellyBuddies, with a 1st-15th group and a 16th-31st group

Pinkpalace: I'm struggling with lack of sleep. Jude might go for 3 or 4 hours from start of one feed to start of the next, but each feed takes an hour or more. He almost always poops either while I'm feeding him or after I finish feeding him, so I have to change his nappy at the end of a feed which completely wakes him up and makes him scream-cry so then I have to resettle on the boob and sometimes he'll poop again ... it's awful. I wish there was some way I could stop him from pooping during feeds because it's a logistical nightmare.

When I wake up to feed him, I can't open my eyes or find the strength to sit up. Sometimes it takes me 1/2 an hour to wake up properly, so add that to the time I'm not actually sleeping between feeds and I'm very lucky if I get an hour and a half sleep between feeds.

I really don't know how anyone gets anything done while feeding a newborn baby. I haven't even made it to get Jude weighed since we left hospital. I just got out of bed and it's already midday.

PinkPalace - We do swaddle DD. Sometimes it works really well and other times she can start crying when we do it. I don't know why she cries sometimes and likes it other times?

kuraiza - I'm going through the exact same thing with feeds as you are!! It takes me a while to wake up for night feeds.. and then I struggle to stay awake.. and it takes an hour to feed.. plus she'll poo in the middle or end of a feed or soon after a feed which wakes her up again! Last night I was up at 3.30am for a feed.. finished feed at 4.30am.. tried to put her to bed but she wasn't happy.. so tried to settle.. then finally realised she'd pooped. So I had to change her nappy and re-feed her at 5.30am till 6.30am! So I was up for a total of 3 hours in a row, plus the half hour it takes me to wake properly and the extra half hour to go back to sleep. I read somewhere that babies can poop anywhere from 10 times a day to every 10 days. We got a 10 times a day bub! I don't know how anyone gets anything done either. I've tried venturing out a couple of times and end up having to feed and change nappy as soon as I get out (even though I feed her just before leaving) and she spent the entire times out unsettled.

itsme - i find most of DS crying is wind pain. ONce he farts or poos he is all good lol!!!
SOmetimes even if not after a feed you need to pick them up and burp them. They need to be burped anytime.

Kurz- I hear you! unfortunately i have no choice but to get things done with DS as i have a 16 month old too lol... who wants 110% of my attention. It means that DS sometimes has to be on his own for 10-15 even if crying so i can get something to occupy DD so she isnt climbing or pulling at my during feeds!

Itsme: :hug: There's some consolation knowing we're not alone. I'll think of you tonight, knowing you're probably awake at the same time. That sounds just like my schedule.

According to that list there are only 7 bubs born between October 1st and 15th. It would be nice to combine the October baby threads, wouldn't it?

Hi all,

Belfie, SamiH and myself are in the Sept 16-30 and we are the only ones in it from our bellybuddy thread and there is only one other person besides that so its very lonely in there too. I'm sure that everyone jumps into each others threads for familiarity and I'd like to do the same in yours if its okay.

As for the sleep deprived new mothers out there, it does get better. You learn to cope with less hours sleep and your babies will start to feed more efficiently and sleep longer. The first 6-8 weeks of new babies lives is the toughest in my experience so just hang in there all zombie eyed. If you find yourself getting frustrated with bubs crying and nothing seems to work close the door and sit outside for a few minutes. You'll be amazed how much it changes the situation for you mentally and you will be more calm to deal again effectively.

Take care of yourselves and make sure you put those feet up every chance you can.

PinkPalace - I do try and burp DD during and after feeds. She doesn't seem to burp much though.. but does have a lot of wind coming out the other end along with all the poop! Not sure if there's much I can do about the wind down there. It seems to come out fine though!

kuraiza - Yes I must admit it is nice knowing that I am not the only one with a constantly pooping baby. :hug: Oh.. and I saw your comment on my bathing photo about bathing Maya properly... umm.. that's actually a picture of the mid-wife demonstrating how to bathe her. DH and I also struggle bathing Maya.. lots of squirming, legs and arms everywhere! :lol:

Im dropping in to say Hi too even though we are in the other group too that I am far too lazy to find right now.

We are doing ok but I am struggling a bit with lack of sleep (who isn't) and carrying a heavy bub while recovering from the c/s. I have a 6 cm muscle separation and my back is overcompensating when I carry the little guy... He also is showing lots of signs of being super sensitive to what I eat and that unfortunately includes chocolate which is what Im craving - I swear I crave more when breastfeeding than pregnant! :rolleyes: It's also amazingly hard with a toddler who is so active and pretty demanding.
Right that is all I can manage right now - off to peek in the gallery at your pics girls! :hug: to you all!!!!

Hope you are all enjoying your babymoon - slowly my brain is coming back and I can get a shopping list organised again :lol: But hubby away rest of week so I am sure I will be back in zombie land by the end of the week.

Tan - I hope your recovering well from your c/s. You know after my first c/s I was in so much pain could not believe how much pain I was in. My belly button was black too. Then with my 2nd c/s, I wasnt in as much pain, yet my belly button was black then too. Also had infections with both of them. This time I am still quite sore and tender, yet I have another infection now. Ohhh the joy. However I am amazed that my belly button isnt black. hehehe. My c/s scar this time tho seems to be lumpy. the others were smooth. hugs

Sami - Hi hunny, I am glad too that you popped in. Gee we are all scattered arent we. hehehe. Cant believe zander is 1month old already. I hope you pay attention to your own advise hun and get some rest. hugs

Cheryl - sorry to hear you have an infection hun.:hug: I didn't get one either time but am just so d@mn sore and frustrated and the silly feelings of "things weren't meant to be like this" are coming in..... slight case of baby blues here at the mo - I know they will pass like they did with Izzy... DH and I were just talking and I was crying and he goes - hun you know you don't do no sleep too well but get used to it! :rofl: It's more that when i am awake I am so sore too though. Going out for the first time since being home for a week too today... going to sit in the park and let the little miss run riot. Sorry for the selfish posts ladies..... back in a few days hopefully in a much better frame of mind!

Hello all, finally made it over here.

DH went back to work yesterday, so it was the first day that I had to organise 5 kids and do the school drop off by myself, managed to do alright I think, we weren't late so that's one thing.

Julian is doing so well, he's only waking once at night and is so settled, it's great. He's also a better sleeper then the other boys and we've only had a few fussy days, I just love watching him and having him sleep on my chest during the day. I'll have to add some more pics to my gallery as well.

Better go and feed him now.

Csab: Good to see you made it here. I'm breastfeeding and it's been far from smmooth. The only issue I don't have is attachment, Jude's a natural but after mastitis in week dot I'm now trying to cope with a baby who vomits up the vast majority of what he eats and I'm so worried about him. He was weighed the other day and he gained 400gs, which I'm pleased with since he only weighs a total of 2.8kgs so 400 is significant, but everyday I feel at my wits end with worry. I'm now living on Rescue Remedy.

Hippie: Awesome that you're enjoying the challenge. It's hugely life altering, isn't it? You seem to have taken to it brilliantly.

Tanstar: In what way is James sensitive to what you eat? How can you tell? I don't know if it's screamingly obvious, but I've had serious baby blues. A couple of doctors have suggested I am at risk of PND. Every time my ob visited in hospital I would break down and cry. Every day I have a little cry, I find it all a bit overwhelming because I really don't have a clue what I'm doing and all my family lives in Sydney. I really need my mummy at the moment. But most of the day I'm ok.

SamiH: What babymoon? The inlaws finally left. They would come by every day, move my furniture around and use up all my dishes and glasses and they never once offered to help and do anything productive except P me off completely. I was so glad to see their backs walking out the door last night. Go back to America and stay there!

AmandaJ: Julian sounds like an angel!

The baby bonus finally came but it's been such a big hassle. My husband is American and we applied for a permanent visa 3 years ago but it's taken the govt too long to process, so we had some hassles with the paper work. Finally the govt saw that we were submitting forms for our baby so 7 days after Jude was born guess what, we got the permanent visa granted. Lazy good for nothings. Anyway, I have to chase up the rent assistance because I think it got lost in the heap of paperwork somewhere at centrelink.

Also, on top of everything I have a lump in my boob that developed when I was pregnant and I've been ignoring it until now. The GP said it didn't feel like cancer, maybe a cyst but she's sending me for an ultrasound (not sure why not a mammogram) and so that's just the icing on the cake, isn't it? Bleh. If only I could have a full night's sleep.

Kur - are you breastfeeding? could it be a blocked duct?
I had a 3 cm lump in my breast a few years back. It turned out to be a hormonal lump. They changed my pill and it went away.. hopefully it is the same!


Amanda - can you get julian to have a man to man to ethan re: sleeping over night lol!

PP: I'm hoping it's something like that. it is a 3cm lump like you described. It just appeared overnight a few months back, it didn't grow from a little spot. Also, I did have the GP check my boobs before I got pregnant and she didn't find anything so I'm optimistic, but there's going to be a nagging doubt in the back of my mind until my ultrasound next week.
