    making fitted cot sheets- advice???

    howdy folks
I have bought some second hand queen sheets and wanted to supplement my nice new cot sheets with some homemade ones....
Can anyone give my some advice on the easiest way to sew a fitted sheet? the ones I have are completely fitted- I was hoping to just cut out rectangle and sew on some elastic....am I dreaming???

    cheers

I've seen a pattern somewhere (can't remember where) and I seem to remember it was a basic rectangle but with a diagonal slit in each corner which you sew up and this makes the flat piece of fabric into a box,IYKWIM, then you sew a hem on it and pop in some elastic. I've never made one but I think that's all there was to it.

Let us know how you go!

    heh krisp!
    ta for reply
i fiddled and fussed and as usual, was trying to do it the hard way
I googled some more and found some good advice (basically add the depth (cm)X2 of the mattress to both the length and width and cut a big rectangle, cut out the corner boxes (depth sizes again) and that gives you basic shape needed, sew up sides and yes, thread elastic thru seam and heh presto! i of course wanted to utilise the already fitted sides of queen sheet and worked out a way to do that too ! just needed to get the ole preggy brain working!
now just need to do the other three!!!!
    cheers

can you tell me your solution for this?

i'm making a fitted sheet to cover my new sofa & i'd like to do the same as far as utilizing the fitted sides/corners of a twin sheet.

i'm also making another (nicer) cover from some velour fabric,, & i understand the directions i've found for that,, but i'm placing a mattress pad beneath it & i'd like to use the fitted sides already on the mattress pad too. (the first one i ever did was about 15-20 years ago,, & using a twin fitted sheet,, i didn't know of any way except taking a very large seam all the way up the length,, then a seam up the width. very tedious work,, & i could have surely used the directions i've now found online for using a flat sheet instead!).

    TIA!!

i'm 57 now so definitely NOT pregnant. but i didn't have my 2 girls until i was age 35 & 36,, with fertility specialists & major surgery to get preg with the first one,, so i can truly relate to all the women/couples going thru the same. then my 2nd one came along without the blink of an eye & totally unexpected!! (they're 17 months apart).

so at my age at the time,, i was in tune to trying to protect things from sticky fingers/spills & it carried over,, so i wanted to protect my new sofa with a nice "fitted" cover. (next on my agenda is a fitted cover for my computer chair since the velour sofa cover seemed to come out well. i LOVE washables!! ).

this site was the only place i'd found where someone must have figured out a better way to utilize the already "fitted" corners of a sheet & i was hoping she would post her solution,, as i do sometimes use a regular fitted sheet when the velour cover is being washed. (*no kids at home now,, but i still keep my tv remote covered in plastic to avoid any messy spills on it. ).
