Question What am I doing wrong?!

WAH!!! What am I doing wrong? I'm making a quilt for a toy cot. The overall measurements I was given were 23cm wide by 42 long. I decided I'd do 6.5cm blocks with 4 in a row and 7 rows. Well, when it is made up - it doesn't seem big enough... In fact, it seems less than half the size! I chose 6.5 cm blocks to account for a 1/4 sewing room... so, what am I doing wrong? When I did the same thing using my 6.5 inch blocks, it worked perfectly - the difference is that with the bigger blocks I used a store bought template, with the smaller blocks I measured them myself with a good old tape measure...

So, what am I doing wrong!?!?!?!

What seam allowance are you sewing? A 1cm seam takes a lot more of 6.5cm block than a 1cm seam from a 6inch block.

    if you have a 1cm seam: 4 blocks x 6.5 will give you total of 20cm (5.5 + 4.5 + 4.5 + 5.5 cm)
    if you have a 1cm seam: 7 blocks x 6.5 will give you total of 33.5cm (5.5 + 4.5 + 4.5 + 4.5 +4.5 + 4.5 + 5.5 cm)

Can you add another row across, and 2 down (to make 5 x 9 blocks)? using 1cm seams this will give you finished 24.5cm x 42.5cm

doudou, I wanted 6.5cm blocks the second time as it was suppose to give me the correct overall size as oppossed to 6.5inch blocks which made a nice lap quilt for DD.

Kate - thanks hon. I ended up deciding to do 6.5inch blocks with a 1/4inch allowance on each side (as set by the foot on my machine - I LOVE this feature!). This time I have done 3 blocks across and 5 rows - this looks to be big enough for a toy cot and still be able to "tuck baby in"... I've finished sewing my blocks together... now I have to work out how to finish it! Arg!

1/4 inch is .6 of a cm, so you've reduced your 6.5cm block to 5.3cm sq.
So you need some more blocks, or run strips between each block?

Ray ray - you're genius! I spent an hour trying to get my fogged up sleep deprived brain to work it out... and gave up My squares are tiny! I just take for granted my seam allowance on the quilting foot Machine quilting is quicker and easier than hand piecing... but it's easy to become complaicent!

Sara - I was thinking borders originally when designing this quilt. Until I realised I might not be able to work it the way I wanted it without wasting too much material... At the moment I'm contemplating how to border the whole quilt for my finish... Guess who's off to spotlight today in search of colour inspiration!?!?! (and to buy a new rotary cutter )
